One thing I've seen very few Tennessee fans willing to admit is that in order for Tennessee to be really good, we need at least one of our big rivals to be down. If Alabama, Georgia, and Florida are all running pretty good under good coaching staffs, it is going to be very hard to compete with them. Each of those schools, particularly Georgia, have inherent advantages over us as it relates to recruiting. It isn't a coincidence that when we were last a very good program, the rest of the SEC was a mess except for Florida. The best UT teams of the 90’s had homegrown talent, yes, but where they excelled at was cherry picking quality players from around the country, especially the Carolinas and Georgia.
Jalen Ramsey, Vonn Bell, Tee Higgins, Cade Mays, Jacoby Stevens, Donta Hightower, Shaq Mason, Randall Cobb, Van Jefferson, those are just off my headIs it really? Legit asking. I know it’s better, as in producing more FBS-level talent, but how many recruits, or maybe what percentage of recruits, leave the state and are difference makers wherever they do go?
That’s some of it, some of it is they get slow played by the staff. All I know is if Pruitt is gonna succeed here he better figure out a way to get top players to stay in state. Not gonna get all of them but he better get more than he is getting.

Now, having said that, we should always be better than Kentucky, Vandy, South Carolina, and Mizzou. Our rivals being good is not an excuse to lose to those schools.
Verc kids ain’t making these decisions because teams go to the little Caesars bowl in Murfreesboro.
Overrated or under coached? Kyle Phillips, Josh Malone, Derek Barnett, Reeves Maybin, Rashaan Gaulden, Jalen Hurd are all getting check in the NFL.This is such an old man take. It doesn't matter at all if he gets players from in state or out of state, as long as he gets good players. Maybe he slow plays them because he rates them behind other guys from states where they play better competition? I don't follow recruiting, so I don't know the specifics. All I know is Butch went all in on keeping Tennessee's top recruits and as a group they turned out to be way overrated. Given the physical and cultural geography of the state, I don't think there's any reason for Pruitt to prioritize instate kids over anyone else.
It's just a numbers game though, unfortunately. Barring huge demographic shifts, there are just way more recruits in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, etc. Both on an absolute basis and per capita. If we want to be a great program, Tennessee will always, at least to a certain extent, need to raid neighboring states for talent (or recruit nationally). Naturally, the neighboring states are easier to raid if the programs in those states are down, as was the case in the 90s.I don’t totally agree with your entire post, but I do agree with what you’re saying about recruiting. I think the best of the in-state recruits are generally still a tier below the best recruits of other states, but there should still be enough good recruits to go around for Tennessee to be on an even playing field, recruit-wise, as Georgia, Alabama, Florida, etc. You just gotta give the best recruits a good reason to come start or at least be in the two-deep at Tennessee instead of being in the three-deep elsewhere.
We’ve prioritized the state, especially Memphis. Not sure what else you want them to do. Atlanta Vol came in and said they fended off AU which means they dropped the bags at his door and he still bold face lied to them. They are doing everything in their power this cycle to get the best in state talent. We missed on a guy because AU’s cabin. It’ll happen again. And to UGA, Bama, LSU, etc.In state recruits are a wide open mid range jumper, out of state kroots are a contested 3. That’s why you should prioritize in state to at least a moderate degree. Plus, Tennessee is now a hot bed of talent. You have a lot more advantages with kroots in state, close to home, relationships with coaches, ease of recruitment (you can easily show up to a game on a Friday night).
