Swain not buying CJP explanation on Maurer

I'm pretty sure Maurer had his helmet on Saturday. If that's the case, then he was cleared to play. I'm thinking they are just playing it safe with him. We didn't need him, so maybe he gets the start this weekend or against Mizzou.

I think maybe and I mean maybe thats what pruitt was thinking, but if it was, its a terrible mistake. maurer needed the in game reps, it will be about 4 weeks with no in game reps. My real thoughts are that pruitt is going with jg, and if he does we will not make a bowl game with jg.

That is correct, he would not be practicing with the first team and he very well may not be but if he is then he is only doing it with the expectation of being able to play if needed. The staff may have felt they didn't need him Saturday and may not play him the rest of the year if they can win without him.

Maurer practiced with 1st team last week and didn't play a snap.

Or it could be that Maurer is "passing" the medical clearance, so he "could" play, but coaches and Docs are seeing somethings that are making them take the high road and holding him out - a conservative approach to take care of a kid's health.

I don't think Pruitt is 100% sold on Maurer or they are completely enamored with Bailey. It seems like they are not willing to go all-in on Maurer and the only reason I can come up with is they don't want to appear to have given him the keys to the car for the next 3 years in order to keep Bailey from slipping away.

I have to think JG and Shrout are both going to transfer after this season, so keeping Bailey committed is a huge priority.

If I were either of them I would transfer,, jg be back next year, and will start, for some reason beyond anything I can see pruitt loves jg. Maurer or shrout either will get to play next year, and it has already been shown no matter how good you do in a game, you are not playing as long as jg is here

I can see Pruitt and Chaney game planning for Kentucky and shrugging their shoulders and saying "JG has hit his ceiling, may as well give the young guys game rep and experience, f it".

Or....they could more likely say..."let's keep the guy in who has had turnovers that directly cost the team points with end zone turnovers in 2 out of the last 3 games and has pins in his hand who handles the ball almost every offensive snap over the healthy one who might turn the ball over".

Pruitt already said they aren't worrying about a bowl game.

“Listen, we’re not focused on making a bowl. What we’re focused on is being the best football team we can be today, continue to develop as a team, get ready for Kentucky. That’s what we’re worried about. "

Maurer did NOT change the teams attitude, this is a ridiculous take I feel. Go tell JJ, Trey Smith, Bituli and Warrior it was Maurer, who has been on campus for less than a year, that sparked the team. I'm guessing that veteran leadership is what has sparked this team and not some Fr that hasn't accomplished anything yet in Knoxville.

He is going by the fact the whole team improved from the time maurer started, go back and look, and notice ol regressed sat against uab. The team as a whole just plays better without jg. Look at sc game, the score when jg was in compared to the score when he got hurt, a 17 point plus difference when shrout was in game. We will not make a bowl this year with jg. Next yr we might win 6 with him.

He wouldn't have started Maurer against Mississippi state and Alabama if true.

I'm sure teams are going to beat down his door!! LoL, I mean why would they not? He was lightly recruited out of high school and he's done very little in 2 years in Knoxville. I guess he can send them tape of him warming up. JT was always a project and he's simply not ready yet. He's raw and young raw players get chewed up in this league. He's nowhere near the best QB on this roster and it's laughable to think he is. Best SEC frame for a QB on our roster for sure, + arm strength yes, but after those 2 skill sets he doesn't do any thing else it takes to play the position any better than JG.

Ut certainly did much better in sc game when shrout was in game., watch the game and the scores when each player played. 17 points better with shrout

As little coach speak as Pruitt gives, he had to say something like this in this situation. In reality he and the coaches are definitely worried about making a bowl game, it would be irresponsible not to. He already mentioned the extra practices and it would be big for the direction of the program in general.

I hope you are right, but last sat. didn't look like it. Maurer needed the game time snaps, for ky if he was going to play maurer. Only way maurer sees the field is when we get 2 td down in score and we are not scoring with jg, which we won't

You have a problem with him saying that? I don't.

As far as JG as and Shrout, JG frustrates me at times so bad I want to ....I don't know, scream, but it is what it is. I trust Pruitt's decision to play him Shrout. To me its a no brainer. If we had lost SC and or UAB, I might feel different. But we didn't.

I get it with the coach speak.

I just parsed his comments to prove my point to the other poster Behr LOL. Pruitt has already said "f it " ( his words not mine ) this season so why not start and play the young guys.

No problem at all lol. See my comment to the other poster.

How are we gonna feel though if playing JG does cost them a game and a shot at a bowl though?

It is what it is and Pruitt is the one who lives with his decisions. Choking away a shot at a bowl down the stretch two years straight would be a bad look though.

You've posted that a few times and I don't get it. We scored 27 points on offense and JG threw 2 TD passes and I think had another drive end with a FG. That doesn't add up.

This is what I didn't like watching JG hurting with a broken wrist playing could have fumbled and we had 3 other guys that could play QB and 2 did play .
I agree. JG was obviously in a lot of pain out there. Like him or not, no one can argue that JG did not Sacrifice his body for UT these past years.

Overcompensate your body. Its like a car out of line then your tires wear out. When he falls if not hurt it may just be a natural fall but when you have a injured wrist then it's in his head he is going to try not to land on it and instead of just falling he may use his throwing arm to catch his fall and then it's broken this happens all the time in training and sports and can't understand how you don't understand that.
I do understand that point but not when it comes to your hands. There is a guy in the NFL w just 1 hand, how does he keep from injuring his other hand every time he falls?

The sad part is , this should be Chaneys call and not Pruitts. Chaney know better than Pruitt knows. All he really knows is defense. Chaney has been doing this while Pruitt was roaming the high school sidelines and if Pruitt is overriding Chaney on this then this will backfire on him. He needs to let Chaney do what he is paid to do.

I don’t think Maurer is completely out this season. I do think it’s an emergency type situation however.

I don’t think he is either. If this is a calculated effort by CJP then good on him. I’d love to see him rotate QB’s again after saying they are all eligible, slide JJ back there for a play and let him hand it off, then another play where he throws it. Heck, BM has been practicing the last few weeks whether he is 100% or not so throw him out there as a wide out or something just as a decoy. That’s the edge he can create of done right IMO.

Applying and getting it is 2 different things, he had his helmet on his head last game. I think Maurer is going to play again this year, some folks just want to find a reason for Maurer to not play. Not directing at you, but I have heard everything from he isn't tough enough to he shouldn't play he has had 2 concussions. Neither statement is true. Why do some seem to want to play favorites instead of going by what you see on the field. I don't give a damn who is qb as long as they are making plays and leading the offense. Our O-line seems to block better when Maurer or Shrout is in there, I don't know why and won't even give my thoughts on it. It is what it is, It is funny how some folks can find every flaw Shrout supposedly has in his limited amount of reps but can't see the flaws of others that have been here years. And yes, JG's improvement started after Maurer and Shrout started getting reps. He has played better and I admire his ability to keep his head up and fight through it. Having said that the coaches job is too put the person out there that can make the offense the most lethal, in them offenses interceptions will sometimes happen. But stats are misleading, give me a qb that throws for 350 3 td's and 2 interceptions over one that throws for 135 no td's and no interceptions. GBO!
No, stats aren't misleading. NOBODY in the NCAA has a QB that consistently throws for 350 yards 3 TDs and 2 interceptions a game, NOBODY, and it's not even close and if they are throwing 2 Ints a game then they are a LOSING program! Pruitt's offensive philosophy is never gonna be a throw it around the whole game anyway, at least not until he has a gamechanger at the position of QB and a stable of extra talented wide receivers, something we currently do not have on the roster. As for the medical redshirt I see it happen every year in our business and if he doesn't play another snap the rest of the year you can bet your paycheck that he's going to apply for a medical redshirt and may very well get it. He's only played 6 quarters this year, the NCAA will take that into account as well as his injury. He may start Saturday for all I know, I don't think he will, based on what I've been told he won't play again this season. Ask one of the guys on here that acts like he knows the kid, he's the same guy that's been saying BM is really not injured that bad and if he didn't get to play anymore it would be Pruitt's decision to not play him. He also said BM can make throws that only 2 NFL QBs can make so take that into account when you get his answer.
