'20 TN ATH Reggie Grimes (Oklahoma commit)

6’5” 240lb “athletic freaks” are rare.

Don’t care if he’s not “physical” enough right now.

Line him up on the edge and say - “you see that big fat OT right there? You’re quicker than him. We want you to run right around him and go hit the QB”

Simple. He’s a take.
Kongbo

And this staff had Kongbo starting to perform well and then his season came to a halt against Auburn with the knee injury. All in all, I think we have the coaches to coax Grimes' potential out and he should be a take so he can be an orange blur off the edge like a heat-seeking missile.

Kongbo was a good player. The revisionist history on him is unreal.
Kongbo came to UT as an athletic freak that was raw. He started playing football his senior year of HS in Canada, spent a year redshirting at Wyoming, then went Juco. He had 3 years as a football player with probably not the best coaching when he stepped foot on campus. Unfortunately for him he stepped into a situation where the coaching wasn't any better and it seemed he wasn't all the way invested in the program from was Twitter. 1 year under Pruitt and you could see the development, similar to what Middleton is showing this year, up until his injury.

I would give Pruitt and staff a 2/2 of coaching up raw and atheletic Juco players that are relatively new to the position. I guess that would be an argument in support of taking Grimes, but Grimes has been playing defense for much longer and has probably had access to better coaches and has been more dedicated than Middleton so I'm not sure if he has the same hold backs to make the comparison.

I guess the staff has doubts as to how hard he'll play or take coaching because the measurables are there, he's an in-state prospect, and seems to be able to play a position where there's a need.

But, this staff really seems to have hit well on the majority of the prospects thus far and as has been mentioned, recruiting and development shouldn't be a significant concern with this staff.

Kongbo was incredibly well built, a chiseled mass. I don’t think anyone ever referred to him as an “athletic freak” though.

This. If I’m on the coaching staff my ego tells me I can make the kid a football player. We don’t seem to be pushing for Grimes which surprises me after BJ leaving but I guess our staff gets the benefit of the doubt until... they don’t.

Haha I was thinking the same thing. It's hard to prove because he was hurt and couldn't run for his pro day. It is hard to doubt his athleticism when he was able to run a reported sub 4.7 and a 37 inch vertical at his size and was the top JUCO prospect for his class that we beat Bama, FSU, and USC for.

I would liken this situation to the Jalen Hurd situation. The difference is, I think we have a coach who can develop talent now. I say take him.

I have seen him play in four home games. I have a friend that's son is on the team. All he's teammates recognize Grimes as their best player. Ravenwood has 7 D1 commits on a great team. With the exception of Brentwood High, Ravenwood has easily beat everyone they played, including the Arkansas champ Pulaski Academy. The BHS game was away and was "off day."

Grimes is definitely Ravenwood 's best player. He is the primary focus of the opposing teams OL. This allows other to make plays. Ravenwood 's staff has Grimes playing RB for a few plays most games. He is not a RB. On defense, Grimes steps up every time he has been asked. His dad is the DC. His dad played for bama. Bama will have to pass on him before he goes somewhere else. But he is a take for UT, USCe, OU...

I don't see him playing anything but DL like his dad.

Just wasn’t a DT. Not bashing Butch because I know they had a ton of injuries at the position that forced him into playing there, but playing inside really wasn’t what he was made for.

Lol and AP is out here saying the kid hasn't had a good senior season. What a laugh.

Said it before I’ll say it again this has a Maleik Gray feel to it. Looks great getting off the bus and will test out the gym in camp drills but when the pads come on he disappears.

My sentiments exactly.

Feels like were pushing more for others like Butler and the kid from FSU etc than Grimes.

I mean grimes is right here in our back yard and it has never felt like the staff has prioritized him like they have guys like Baron, Hardy, Cooper, Keshawn etc.

Lest we forget the mt juliet insider last year saying our pwo Bryan Aiken was twice the player as Grimes.
If that was the case I’d think we would hear something from Aiken instead of the nothing we have so far. Sometimes I wonder if VN would be higher on Grimes if he were a Tennessee legacy instead of a Bama. Just a thought

To be fair, Aiken would be behind Taylor, Johnson, Crouch, Bennett and others right now. I’m still curious to see if he shows up in the next year or two

Tbh I hope not. Unless he is just special as a PWO, generally if one is contributing something has gone wrong
