Barnes said recently olivier is even better than they thought. We really need Plavsic to be cleared to play
Opening night starters: Turner, Bowden, Josiah, Pons and Fulk
After 10 games: ON will have replaced Pons as the starter at the 4, imo.
I expect those 6, JJ and Kent to be the main rotation. I'm a big fan of Olivier and expect him to be an all-SEC Freshmen, along with Josiah. U gotta think Gaines and Pember will have the opportunity to play their way into the rotation, as Kent and Pons could play their way out of it
I agree. The newbies would have to be special to take Fulk's place. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if Uros took it upon clearance, but it's anyone's guess at this point. That seems to be the talk...my guess is that Fulkerson’s experience and familiarity plays a big part and he’s always been a guy Barnes really likes.
I personally believe that Pons will show out now that he's playing his most natural position at the 4. He will have a disadvantage most nights and he won't have to look over his shoulder for fear of being pulled off the floor.Apparently Johnson and Kent are gonna be the most improved players in the history of the program and go from not being able to get playing time to all-time greats while Pons will show no improvement at all. At least that's what you would think reading this board.

You must not think ORN will play this season? If Pons looks as lost as he did much of last season then his minutes will reflect it. By no means am I rooting for this as I think he has the potential to be an impact player if he can perform up to his potentialI personally believe that Pons will show out now that he's playing his most natural position at the 4. Barnes implying lately he expects ON to be an impact player this season and better than he and staff expected him to be. Also thought it was interesting he saw Gaines getting significant minutes before his injury. You must not think ORN will play this season? Fulk plays with great energy. He’s added some bulk (not enough IMO) and attacks the rim. The guy is actually leading the dunk highlight reel. He is also season in competing in this league. Plav hasn’t played a lick of college ball. If eligible I could see him working into starting line up and sliding Fulk to the 4Unless fulk has grown 4 inches, put on 50 pounds, and became Hakeem Olajuwon incarnated.... uh oh. Lol
ON reminds me of Grant. He’s leaner at similar point in their careers but more of a filled out player than I expected. 224 is stout at 6’7” (he ain’t 6’8”).Barnes implying lately he expects ON to be an impact player this season and better than he and staff expected him to be. Anxious to see if the Baby Stork can bring it this season. ON just might be a little better O rebounder than Grant. Need to get this show goin.ON reminds me of Grant. He’s leaner at similar point in their careers but more of a filled out player than I expected. 224 is stout at 6’7” (he ain’t 6’8”).
SURPRISED to see Kent at 235.

Kyle Boone had some interesting comments on Josiah James on CBS’s b-ball website:
5. Who is the most underrated potential one-and-done?
By underrated, I'm going to use the paramaters of any true freshman who 247Sports rated as a sub-top-20 prospect. Using that, my vote is ... drumroll please ... Josiah-Jordan James. The 6-5 point guard will be thrust into a starting role right away at Tennessee, and I'm not so sure he won't be one of the best at the position in the SEC this season. You might feel like he's playing in slow motion when you watch him, but he methodically picks apart teams and has an innate feel for the game that separates him from many others. When you couple that with his 6-6 frame, it's easy to project him having a short stint in college.

Definitely could be be wrong, but I believe Gaines will be a much better overall player. Read the other day, in the Athlon Sports season preview for Tennessee, that Gaines had multiple quadruple doubles in high school. Much different than college I understand, but pretty difficult at any level.Gaines to me looks to be similar to Jalen Johnson. I think the main difference is the confidence level. Gaines has plenty of it while Johnson never seemed comfortable in his role. Gaines can flat out stroke it too, when he gets going.
It would be a major disappointment is Gaines doesn't outshine Johnson. Five minutes of going in a game and putting out max effort is about all it would take. Johnson might be the most disinterested player I've ever seen.Definitely could be be wrong, but I believe Gaines will be a much better overall player. I do agree about the confidence being higher for Gaines at the same point of their careers though. IMO it’s because he knows he’s not as one dimensional as Johnson and can contribute for minutes in multiple ways other than scoring.
Tennessee will get a test this weekend in the Emerald Coast Classic where they’ll first square off against a Florida State team that will really challenge them with their length. Tennessee handled a Washington team fairly easily that had much more size in the paint than the Vols, but they also lost the rebounding battle 42-32 in that match-up. How the Vols hold up on the glass will be a big deal in Friday night’s match-up. Tennessee will square off with either No. 20 VCU or Purdue on Saturday. It’s a much different looking Purdue team than the one that knocked the Vols out in the Sweet 16 last spring in heartbreaking fashion. VCU has a nice early season resume win over LSU under its belt already.
One thing Rick Barnes would like to see this week is some productive minutes off of his bench. Thus far it’s looked like freshman Olivier Nkamhoua is the reserve that Barnes is most comfortable playing heavy minutes, but they’ll need solid minutes from Drew Pember, Jalen Johnson and Davonte Gaines if they’re going to win two games this week. Pember seems to be a guy that Barnes feels like has some seriously untapped upside and that’s been reflected in how hard the head coach has been pushing him of late. Barnes recently started requiring Pember to come in on his own and make 500 three-pointers before practice begins.
-VQAfter Tuesday night’s win over Chattanooga Barnes was critical of Lamonte Turner’s decision making on a night when he went 4-of-16 from the floor but also dished out 12 assists. Initially Barnes was critical of Turner for not getting others more touches, particularly John Fulkerson who was 4-of-4 from the floor and got to the line nine times. After watching the tape Barnes amended his stance and felt like Fulkerson, as well as Yves Pons, needed to do a better job of establishing position and demanding the ball. That will be something to keep an eye on this weekend, especially against Florida State’s size in the paint.
It sounds like if Pember does what coach wants him to do he is going to have a big season next year and potentially late this year. Admiral made a big jump after receiving the same challenge a few years ago.Pember seems to be a guy that Barnes feels like has some seriously untapped upside and that’s been reflected in how hard the head coach has been pushing him of late.
