Maurer also has less than 3 games of experience. He'll improve the more he plays, so he likely stops turning it over as much as he's currently averaging.

Ultimately if you are playing sound defensively and have a great special teams you will take your "lumps" with an inexperience QB who can at least keep the drives alive. For the style of play we are using to win with, 3 & outs are almost as bad as turnovers.

I’ve missed the earlier convo in this thread so apologies if it’s been established already but I can only assume the bolded is sarcastic, correct?
Yeah, I had the same thought. CJP changed quarterbacks because that's what he felt like he had to do to win. It had nothing to do with giving in to fans' demands lol.

Not at all. Are you telling me you never heard the fans ? Are you not telling me you haven't noticed the empty seats ? Fans are not ignorant. Fans know when the team is improving and when it hasn't. Had Pruitt tried to continue with JG at QB things would be a lot worse right now.
Pruitt was pretty hard headed. Nothing like a good dunk of reality to wake him up.
I noticed in the last 2 press conferences Pruitt acts like a totally different coach. He's no longer snarky.
He actually tries to explain things and comes across totally different. It's like a weight has been lifted off him and I am thrilled about it. He seems so much more at ease.
So to be honest I think Maurer's personality is contagious. Looks like the whole team has caught it and then Pruitt caught it from them. Now that's a good thing. A good coach has to recognize the problem and then attempt to solve it. Pruitt did just that with a little help from the fans and I imagine the administration.

I personally don’t think Pruitt caved to fans. I think he decided what’s best for his team to win games. Empty seats are a by product of losing, and we were losing.

I firmly believe the staff thought JG gave them the best chance to win the first three games. To be honest, who on here thought otherwise? Then the UF game came, and I’m sure they didn’t want to start a true freshman at the Swamp. Then they started BM.

Jim Chaney knows what he is doing. I gave Chaney some criticism at UGA based on some play calling with poor personnel choices. But he is light years better and more experienced than what we had last year.

I lean that way too.

I think he’s had to have learned a lot about managing relationships and emotions in 22 months on the job.
I like that he does seem to learn though. This OJT learning curve has been much steeper than I anticipated. I guarantee you that if he could start the season over he would have actually gameplanned and prepared for GSU instead of using it as a NFL pre-season type of evaluation practice...and he would blown them off the field. I qlso think he would have called TO against BYU and set his defense..and he would gave won that game...that is a steep learning curve indeed.

So you think a coach who has been on Nat’l Championship teams (albeit as an assistant), with a staff full of well known, well respected coaches, takes his cues on who to play from Jimmy Bob in Cookeville, TN?

To me, this is just nonsensical. You’re giving Pruitt blame for playing JG, but letting fans take credit for the switch to BM.

I’m not sure I agree with your assumption that we didn’t prepare for Georgia State. I know that has been bounced around by a lot of people. We prepared for them the same way we’ve prepared for scrub openers in years past. It’s basically “focus on yourself” not “gameplan for x team.”

The problem is we just came out flat.

But anyway, to your larger point, I do think he’s shown an ability to adapt - in-game especially. And his offseason staff moves show he knew what he originally thought would be good enough wasn’t good enough.

The learning curve has been steep - and slower than should’ve been reasonably expected - but he has an opportunity to turn it around. And 95% of that work will be done in player development and recruiting - two things I’m confident this staff can do at a high level.

On the second pick of Maurer - who immediately went up to Palmer and told him what he should have done? Palmer paid attention to what he said.

Callaway.

In a previous game, who told JG on the sideline on the pick he threw that JG misread coverage.

Callaway.

Callaway knows. All receivers are coached to moved toward the QB in those scramble situations. When Palmer saw Maurer was coming his way in a scramble situation he is supposed to move toward him, not stay along the end line for the jump ball. Maurer should not have thrown it, but he trusted his receiver to hold up his end. He didn't. Just like JG not reading the corner jumping the out with Callaway. If the corner jumps the route, the QB holds the throw and then delivers a quick, hard, pad level throw to the receiver on the up move before the S arrives.

FWIW, Callaway will be the consummate professional in the league. VFL.
Maurer was just late on the pass. He had Palmer about 2 secs before but he held onto ball too long

He’s a gun slinger. More he plays the more it will payoff in the long run to let him sling. Makes running game better because you have to account for it. A really good DC got him on the first one. Stupid mistake on the second one. He just removes one of them and we have 10 points in ONE quarter and D is not put in bad field position spot. Kid needs to play and we grin and bear it with mistakes. Will still be more fun to watch AND I think he gives us best chance to win now and in future. We have been one dimensional and as Pruitt has shown, even our D can stop that.

What will be interesting to track, as well, is whether or not the Mississippi State game is an aberration on the defensive side or not.

I thought we had really turned the corner after the Kentucky game last year and we fell off a cliff. Hopefully last Saturday was a true result on that side of the ball.
Looked like we played a lot more man on the outside. We are so much better doing that than zone

Oh come on..seriously? You either have to be really slow, or just so down on him that you refuse to acknowledge that they were using that game as a evaluation practice and it backfired in a horrendous way...

And I know you're not dumb sooo...

It was dumb of Pruitt to do it, and I don't think it will ever happen again. We might get beat by an underdog, but not that big of an underdog.

Yeah, I just don’t buy it the way you’re selling it. You can say we didn’t take Georgia State seriously and I agree with that. But I don’t think we prepared any differently than we prepared for UTC or UTEP and ETSU last year with the same coaching staff.

The prep for those games are always about getting yourself right and maximizing what your team can do. There’s a small amount of prep for the actual opponent.

Georgia State didn’t do anything that caught us off guard. We were simply flat and our players didn’t take it seriously. Once they hit us in the mouth we folded.

Pruitt has never been a head coach and yes, of course I lay it at Pruitt's feet. Dabo has been a coach a long time and had a good QB but l saw Trevor his freshman was better and took the hit and made the move.
It's my opinion that had it not been for the fans Pruitt would still be trotting JG out there and telling the fans it was our best shot at winning.
Just wait until it Pruitts first time of having to juggle the responsibility of having 2 very good QB's in the stable.
While it may appear nonsensical to you it is very clear to me.
Thankfully that is in the past and Maurer brings a whole new meaning to team work. The whole new attitude in the team is proof and the fans seen it a mile away as the saying goes.

I agree, it’s like I knew someone would eventually do something about it... and they didn’t. Both coaches and players. Treated the game like a scrimmage and subbed way too many players in and out experimenting during the game. Credit ga state for finishing the fight.
I’d bet the bank Pruitt won’t have a team underprepared for a cupcake the rest of his career.

How do babies fart so loud

You should ask Chief. He is the resident expert on anything poop-related.

And he is always reliable when it comes to

Oh come on man..it is sooo obvious that was what happened to me. I don't think they could have ever beaten us if we were just "flat". They used it as a NFL preseason type thing and it backfired because...

#1..JG sucks soooo bad.
#2..The OL was still in figure out who is playing where mode..
#3...The defense had no plan for an actual game...at all.
#4...They were all flat...because..they all knew it was practice..

And finally GSU had a good solid game plan, and they came out determined and thinking they had a chance..

Now that I think about it, I wish this Bubba game would go that way...but Saban is not OJTing...so it will not.

Ultimately..if we had came out to actually play a game with a real game plan for that opponent..especially on defense...we would have beaten the ish out of them.
