What will be interesting to track, as well, is whether or not the Mississippi State game is an aberration on the defensive side or not.I'd take the over on 6 INTs if Maurer starts/plays every game the rest of the way. But I also think he could throw 20 TDs as well. The wildcard "X-factor" is that he may run for a few and will for sure keep more drives moving with his legs and willingness to run.
I think we absolutely have to win 3 of the next 6. Should not for any reason lose to Kentucky, UAB or Vandy not with the way the defense is playing. If we beat South Carolina in a similar fashion to how we controlled MSU then I think we're winning 6 and going bowling.
And everyone will spend the rest of the year discussing those 2 blown games to start the season.
I missed lots of pages of posts when all that was going down. I do recall that JB posted something on social media about his loyalty/love for CJP on the same day (or one day before) he was dismissed. Was there ever any discussion about that? Are most folks taking that to mean that, in spite of being dismissed, JB still had that loyalty to CJP? If so, I think CJP definitely gave Banks a reason to be hopeful that his football career would continue in some way, shape or form.I have a feeling, behind the scenes there will be a path for Banks to rejoin the team next year if he completes certain criteria.

I thought we had really turned the corner after the Kentucky game last year and we fell off a cliff. Hopefully last Saturday was a true result on that side of the ball.
Perhaps I should have posed the question without benching or JG being involved
I’ll ask it this way
CAn we win 3 more games with 18 throwing a pick every 12 pass attempts??
Maurer's performance against UGA and how he moved the ball against MSU has caused everyone in here to move the goalposts a little bit. When most of us became convinced that JG was not the answer (some sooner than others), the general consensus in here was, "Just let Maurer have the rest of the year. He'll make some mistakes and we probably won't win any more games, but it gives him good experience and a chance to do some growing up heading in to next year."
Now, because of the upside that he's shown, everyone expects him to do his learning/growing this season and deliver us more wins. I definitely don't disagree that there are some mistakes he can correct, and want to win as many as possible. But I also think that if he throws multiple interceptions in several games the rest of the way that he's still a freshman, he's still growing up and learning, and it will benefit us next year. I don't want everyone turning on him if he performs the way most of us expected he would before we saw the UGA and MSU games.
No matter how many different ways you ask that same question Bruin your going to get the same answer. 2+2 still equals 4 and your still going to get Maurer as your answer. Pruitt had to give in to the pressure from the fans for a new QB. He was very wise in doing so and as it turns out the fans wasn't the ignorant ones and Pruitt was wise to listen to the fans. We know what we see on the field of play.
Maybe you should ask "can we win with our defensive play". If we fall behind and the number of passing attempts increase then the chances of interceptions increase.
To me its just great to be able to sit down and watch the Vols finally play with some excitement.
It’s funny, I don’t think Maurer factored into that MSU win much. He had a nice run that JG in no way manufactures. But he also cost us a couple scores that JG probably salvages field goals out of. JG could have won that game with our game plan and the way our defense played.
Maurer is just more bouncy so it looks better to us all. Our offense still kinda sucks with Maurer (at this point). But maybe he’s buoyed the offensive line and defensive side of the ball![]()
I actually think JG may have found his place. Lots of coaches like having the experienced, veteran backup. The guy who can come in and manage a lead, maybe improve on it here and there, where the defense is doing most of the heavy lifting. As long as they don't ask too much of him, I think it's a good match. He's not going to throw you into first place in the division, but he can nurse a lead when the starter gets dinged up.
That's exactly the role he took against MSU, and it worked out very well.
I’ve missed the earlier convo in this thread so apologies if it’s been established already but I can only assume the bolded is sarcastic, correct?
Dang you gotta hard on for JC. What did he do? Yell at you one time or something..You really don’t. South Carolina laid the blue print for him last year in the 2nd half. Squat underneath and clog up the middle. He can’t throw over the middle or down the field. Maurers threats with his legs and downfield opens up running lanes and gives Jennings and DWA room to work underneath. I do agree that Chaney gets greedy especially in the Redzone.
It's better than not getting into the RZ to make mistakes..The offense is a dead issue with JG in there. Three and out and punt from your 20-25, or ints deep on their side of the field..which is worse? We're not going to finish the season the way we need to if the QB doesn't take care of the ball. IDT Pruitt will keep playing a QB who throws multiple INTs a game, especially in the RZ. But I doubt Maurer will continue to do that. I think he'll continue to get better. He brings the intangibles; he just needs more game experience.
And I think the coaches will find ways to keep JG engaged. He'll play some. Shrout is the forgotten man. He might as well watch free phone football back in the tent.
