We barely move the ball with JG and got lucky we could run on MSU and now people want JG back at QB? Maurer moved us up and down the field with ease and just happened to make a couple bad decisions in the red zone. One was right after he got hurt. JG got lucky Byrd is really fast and MSU did not defend well or we would have only gotten three points from JG. Being one dimensional and barely throwing the ball will not beat many teams. We need Maurer even if it means a few more INTs.
It’s crazy man lol

We're not going to finish the season the way we need to if the QB doesn't take care of the ball. IDT Pruitt will keep playing a QB who throws multiple INTs a game, especially in the RZ. But I doubt Maurer will continue to do that. I think he'll continue to get better. He brings the intangibles; he just needs more game experience.

And I think the coaches will find ways to keep JG engaged. He'll play some. Shrout is the forgotten man. He might as well watch free phone football back in the tent.

Pretty much the reason for my op. I agree totally

There shouldn’t be a number on these. You have to look at the context of his interceptions.for instance One against Uga Calloway was knocked down (should’ve been PI) and the defender gets an easy INT. I will gladly take some interceptions if it means we are taking shots and being more of a threat on offense. I don’t want to see anymore of the offense with JG.not taking away from what he did but look at them for what they were.... Thankfully some skill guys made some great plays after elementary level throws to win us the game

I agree it’s dangerous and not wise to count them but that’s really the only thing we can measure around here. I think @LAVol nailed it with his post on the matter

He moves the ball...that is why people feel that way about him...mistakes while moving the ball are better than mistakes while going three and out most if the time..JG just brings a hopeless feeling with him. And that was earned over years.

It is hard for me to believe he will be much better than he has been now.

I agree, Shake and Bake moves the ball well. JG off the bench might be a good thing. Need to keep him engaged. We will need him to make a bowl.

Maurer didn’t throw a pick on that play. Went out of bounds. His pick was when he tried to throw it to Palmer and he didn’t look the safety off

Agree but I’ll take my chances with maurer becoming smarter with the ball over hoping JG can suddenly become a threat with his legs and throwing over the middle & down the field.

You really don’t. South Carolina laid the blue print for him last year in the 2nd half. Squat underneath and clog up the middle. He can’t throw over the middle or down the field. Maurers threats with his legs and downfield opens up running lanes and gives Jennings and DWA room to work underneath. I do agree that Chaney gets greedy especially in the Redzone.
We should’ve won that game though. Pruitt screwed that up by not challenging the fumble we recovered which led to an SC TD

Just to be clear I am not suggesting that it’s time for JG. I am asking the question what if 18 doesn’t become smarter with the ball.

Bingo. I like that maurer has that Baker mayfield attitude but he needs to learn to pick his battles.

I do wish JG would play against bama though. Worried about Maurer getting hurt

Perhaps I should have posed the question without benching or JG being involved

I’ll ask it this way

CAn we win 3 more games with 18 throwing a pick every 12 pass attempts??
3 more? That’s borderline but I think it’s borderline even if he plays average ball.

Lot of crap left on our schedule.

No question-- Maurer has the upside. When JG plays, Chaney will continue to manage him. IDT they'll give JG too much... but he showed that he's still invested.

Sorry it was Palmer but the defender knocked him off his route down field. that’s a 5050 ball if not a catch if that doesn’t happen. Definitely not an easy INT. Should’ve been PI imo

Yea he’s invested and trying hard and being a good teammate which is great. But we are a really bad offense with him under center this year.

I agree, and to add to this on Maurer's first pick, Calloway also went right to him to let him know he misread the coverage and he was wide open...

Maurer read was right but it was prior to the ball being snapped. He read man coverage on Jennings and Calloway. 2 defenders to cover 2 WR’s.

Maurer knew he had 1 on 1 coverage with Jennings. So that’s usually a win for UT because in single coverage Jennings wins that battle. Maurer made up his mind prior to the ball being snapped that he was throwing it to Jennings.

Maurer’s mistake was made after the ball was snapped, the corner was supposed to cover Calloway and the safety was to cover Jennings instead they both took Jennings leaving Calloway wide open.

Had Maurer waited for the play to develop a bit he gets an easy TD to Calloway and the rout is on.

I'd take the over on 6 INTs if Maurer starts/plays every game the rest of the way. But I also think he could throw 20 TDs as well. The wildcard "X-factor" is that he may run for a few and will for sure keep more drives moving with his legs and willingness to run.

I think we absolutely have to win 3 of the next 6. Should not for any reason lose to Kentucky, UAB or Vandy not with the way the defense is playing. If we beat South Carolina in a similar fashion to how we controlled MSU then I think we're winning 6 and going bowling.

And everyone will spend the rest of the year discussing those 2 blown games to start the season.
