Oh but it is a zero sum game. We only have a finite amount of troops and resources available. Throwing either of those into the sandbox will indeed take away from what can/should be done domestically.

How can you be sure of that? I can't be sure it has but it's been 18 years since 9/11 without anything remotely as significant on our soil. I'm not suggesting that the correlation between taking the fight to them caused that, but it's worth mentioning.

No it's not, you're equivocating American SF troops advising and fighting with our allies with the whole of the US military defending our "borders". Call me when ISIS, is assaulting our shores from landing craft while halo jumping into D.C.

There was anything remotely as significant as 9/11 in the previous 200+ years of our country.

Are we to expect to have troops over there another 18+ years?

Were we occupying Syria and Afghanistan actively rooting out the Taliban and destroying the Al Qaeda network prior to 9/11?

I think 9/11 happened because of our relationship with Israel along with our "crimes" against muslims, it was a holy war... A 'fatwa' as OBL called it in his letter to America.

Was there? No, it's a good thing we take the fight to our adversaries instead of waiting for it here.

Are we expected to have troops over there for 18 years? I don't know, is terrorism going to be a threat in 18 years? will leaving "over there" create a vacuum for another terrorist group to arise like ISIS did from Al Qaeda?

I'm all for washing my hands of the middle east and let Europe handle the mess. We can beef up our borders and immigration policies to keep out the radical muslims at a much lower cost than keeping our military spooled up over there.

No argument there. The cost of the military is staggering - what's the cliche' "freedom isn't free"?

Let's not conflate the cost of the troops in Syria with the entirety of the U.S. defense budget.

There are only a few things I think the government should spend taxpayer money on and they don't go far past infrastructure and the military.

Nope.

Pretty sure the GOP and Trump blamed the rise of isis on Obama for leaving the ME too soon, I wonder if Trump will get the same blame?

Hopefully super-ISIS doesn't fill the void like every other antibiotic resistant infection that pops up.
