Kinda worried Bailey decides he doesn't wanna sit behind Maurer next year...

The good news for Bailey is that Maurer would be a Sophomore next season, so he could RS and then could compete in year 2 for the backup role and potentially take over at QB in Year 3 if Maurer leaves early.

I like the idea of some real competition at that position though. So hoping Bailey isn't soft and just wants to be named the starter day 1 cause of what he did in HS.

There are upperclassmen in every program that he would have to beat out. Maurer has been good in a single game. Let’s not borrow trouble

I think we all want Bailey. But I don't care who is back there at QB as long as they're doing their job and winning games.

Part of me wonders if that’s why Pruitt has been reluctant to start him. All logic would say JG should have been good enough to be the guy all season and allow Maurer a red shirt year, but that is a luxury we still don’t have.

That's still dumb though, because Maurer (and Shrout) would have been in a QB battle with Bailey next year regardless of who starts this year. Why would we not start a good QB because we're afraid he'll look too good?! Madness!

Edit: Also, Guarantano will still be a Senior next year, so that is another wrinkle.

Did you guys read Doug Dickey's idea to expand the 4 team playoff? One of the best ideas I have heard so far. Entire interview is a free read over on 247 site.

ON CHANGES HE WOULD MAKE TO THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF
“If I was the commissioner and had the magic to turn the button, I would make a 12-team playoff, and I would give the first four guys a bye. And I’d say five, six, seven and eight are home games. And give nine, 10, 11 and 12 the road game at five, six, seven and eight. And now, they would travel, get an upset, then the next game I would put in a bowl position. So one, two, three, four would jump back in. And now five, six, seven and eight, if they won, they would travel, along with one, two, three and four to a bowl site.

"We would not have to put a whole lot of travel burden on people and you can manage the game easy enough in the first round, with most people at their home site. And what I think that would do, instead of having six or eight people thinking they’re in it, you would have 30 … thinking they could get in that round of 12. Which would change what I think is happening in a lot of recruiting that has been difficult for the University of Tennessee to overcome. But we’ll see what happens. I don’t know where that goes. There are some people that want to open it up and grow it a little bit. Like baseball. And basketball has 64 teams playing in it."

Yea those teams are horrible. Bama duh. MSU and Missouri are decent so I’ll write those off too. But there’s legitimate excuse as to why we couldn’t win those home games and Kentucky on the road. Not roster, not QB, not coaching etc.
well, we're horrible too........so......still hard to say "can't"...oh, we can..............we really need go 5-2 down the stretch. that's what we need to do. 4-3 or 3-4 seems more likely.

Yeah, I'm not sure the logic of it. We've seen this new era of transfer portal to go play is just different. People who think Maurer playing solid and taking over won't potentially impact recruiting Bailey are crazy. I just hope it's too late in the game for him to be flipped.

I really hope that Pruitt & Chaney take this QB situation to heart though moving forward. Makes a lot more sense to split reps with the 1s among two QBs, regardless if they are in a legit battle to be starter or not. If you're #1 is "the guy" then he doesn't need all the reps, and you need to have a backup that's got some familiarity with the starters in case of an injury.

agree on the luxury of the RS issue, but he can still use it later if need be.

i don't think though, that bailey's recruitment has had a thing with why he didn't start maurer before Saturday.....i just don't think this coach is wired that way. not at all. the previous guy..maybe...probably. not this guy. for all his faults, i don't think he's playing the appeasment game on that level with recruits.

I was visiting the Football Forum and they said that we shouldn't worry about recruiting. We should blow the whole thing up and start from Square 1 like UAB did.

Those who suggest that we do this need to come to the realization that we're currently in year 2 of rebuilding from Square 1.

The cumulative effect of successive bad hires left this program decimated.

90% sure he will NOT be here next year🦉

at some point coaches play the players that help them win games.

not every move a coach makes on a current roster is to defray the cost it migh maybe have with a prospect, committed or not.

i would be absolutely shocked if he was managing this year's QB situation based on anything to do with what Bailey thought of it.

I don’t think JG was going to be here next year. Either he would be improved enough to test the draft, or be bad enough to warrant a transfer. Looks like the latter now.

Rumor was that Pruitt wasn’t high on Shrout anyway and that appears to have some credibility now.

That really just leaves Maurer. Maurer doesn’t have to play like a Heisman candidate. If he just plays decent showing his potential it’s enough to plant a seed of doubt in Bailey. I hope Bailey sticks but it could be harder to hold on to him now.
