I have to admit to a new love in my life though. I spotted a new metallic red Miata hardtop from almost a block away a couple of days ago ... wow. From the right angles you can almost think like Cobra Daytona Coupe and Ferrari GTO. It's making me consider that maybe I could manage the ignominy of trips in the wife's SUVs type preference. But on the other hand, lots of HP and all wheel drive is a really hard addiction to break.

From what I've read about the Miata that is a great little car but I have never driven one. Kinda caught the sports car bug from my Dad whose toy was a BorgWard Isabella he bought off a Navy man (we lived in Norfolk then) who had brought it back from Germany. He later tinkered with a couple of Alfa Romeo's. My first car was a lovely little Triumph GT6... purchased with earnings from my first quarter of co-op work and lasted though the rest of my days at UT. I'm mulling my options right now, what to get after I unload that 2018 F-150 which I don't like to drive... that Macan with the twin turbo looks pretty sweet.

I haven't thought about those cars in years.

I drove my SIL's Miata a few years ago. It was pretty nice - real smooth manual kinda made up for not loads of power. I liked the feel. I'd probably say it was quick but not fast around town.

This was a fun car. Toyota Sports 800. Two cylinder - can't remember if 3 or 4 speed. If I really stretched, I could reach over from the driver's seat and barely touch the ground. I don't know why I never got a better picture of it. It was never imported into the US as far as I know. Honda had a competitor that was a chain drive 2 cylinder air cooled engine ... Honda was primarily motorcycles in those days. This picture would have been winter/spring '69 (I think) Okinawa. The neighborhood kids liked the car ... and cameras.

Next day after I cooled down, I went out and actually backed the bolt out; you could see the twist and the break, but it stayed together. The studs I learned to hate most were the ones on the exhaust manifold.

Torquing head bolts always make me nervous. GM has the bright idea to use torque to yield bolts and they are a use once then throw away part. Went with studs on this rebuild. Just finished with the bolt repairs.

Time for the fun part.

Speaking of fun part. Time to take a shower, fix something to eat, and get ready for the game. Wife's gone, so I've been a slob most of the day ... did get the cat litter boxes dumped, cleaned, and refilled ... could be the fun part of the day is over. But a real Vol fan never gives up.

Really cool! Reminds me of the time I was at UT, probably 1974 or '75 after I'd had a year or so of co-oping with BFGoodrich. There was a girl from Danang in my Organic class who asked me to help with her Chemistry homework. She was living in the home of a professor who was from China and taught in the College of Architecture at UT and he had a funny little car. I don't remember exactly what it was except it had a 2-stroke engine and was either from Japan or China, but he could not find tires for it so I investigated within BFG and was able to come up with a set of tires for him.
