Battle was awful. He left the program in the ashes that took Majors so long to clean up.
Completely agree. He took a NC contending program and drove it off the cliff in 7 years. Had 4 QBs to start in his second season (71) because he couldn’t decide on the one who could win. Team became very soft under him. Footnote: former Bama player who was an assistant at UT before being promoted to HC when Dickey left. No prior HC experience.

I mean, he won more in his first 7 than Majors and never had a losing record. But I think Battle's last 4 seasons were more on par with him as a head coach than his first 3 where he was riding the success Doug generated while here.

Majors went 44-35-2 in his first 7 seasons with just .557 for the win percentage, 4 of those 7 seasons were also 6 wins or less. I just think Majors being a former player gives him some blinders. Before Fulmer took over as OC he had just 3 seasons with 9 or more wins, Fulmer as OC they when 9 games in the 4 straight seasons until Majors is let go.
I think if you’re comparing Battle to Majors favorably your understanding of Tennessee football history comes from a Wikipedia page.

No the ones that hate him are the same ones who were miserable and couldn't enjoy our most successful run in the last 50 years because it wasn't their boy "King Johnny" leading the way anymore. They really couldn't stomach that Fulmer won the Natty in 98.
Never met anyone who fits that description.

Eh, just stating the facts. I don't think Battle was a better HC than Majors though, since that's obviously what you're trying to imply I'm saying.

Neyland, Fulmer, and Dickey are the top 3 (in that order) to me with Majors at 4.

Someone thinks Battle was better than Majors? Battle had Peanut who was fun and a bunch of good guys but after the guys he inherited were gone he was sorta like that JG slide

Is this any good? I was debating on starting it Tuesday night.

Lol Mullen is awesome. I just like poking at bass. It’s too easy

Unfortunately Mullen is a very good coach. I am somewhat surprised he stayed at Miss. State so long and put himself through the torture that was that West schedule with Miles & Saban

He could be dominating in probably any other conference in the country and flirting with the playoffs, but seems to want the challenge of being a winner in the SEC.

He's a good not great coach. Will not win or compete for a championship at Florida.

Battle was Butch Jones if Butch had followed a good coach.

Because he had it made. He could go 5-7 and his job was fine. He was looking for a big job where he thought he could really excel. He also needed a job where it was easier to recruit because that's not his strength.
