So this boils down to we have a portion of the fan base that HATES CPF, no matter what. Do those people even acknowledge all the wins and good that he has done?

No the ones that hate him are the same ones who were miserable and couldn't enjoy our most successful run in the last 50 years because it wasn't their boy "King Johnny" leading the way anymore. They really couldn't stomach that Fulmer won the Natty in 98.

Yeah I'm slightly confused by the two groups of Phil Fulmer "haters"

It seems to be two specific groups. Those that his era ended before their time (so anyone who has only been watching the last 10-15 years) or those that still hold ill feelings towards him for "taking" Majors job.

I mean he won the east 4 times in the 2000s, and he won the SEC title outright twice in the late 90s, plus obviously the national championship. Had 2 season with just 5 wins, and both happened in his last 4 years here. So there were issues there, both seemed to relate to the offensive issues. I just don't think he was ever really comfortable with any OC except Cut and I can't blame him. 5-6 with Sanders in 2005 (102nd ranked offense in PPG at just 18.6) and then again in 2008 with Clawson with an even worse offense (111th ranked offense in PPG at just 17.3).

So I guess if Cut never left as OC we'd probably have never seen the two losing seasons and Fulmer might still be the HC. I know it's a well beaten horse, but just found it interesting. Also worrisome a bit cause he couldn't find adequate replacements, a top 25 defense both those seasons too...didn't need an elite OC just someone who could score you 3 TDs or more.

What we have to define is what is an outlier and what is a pattern.

There’s likely too little evidence to make the call right now - it’s trending downward for Pruitt but there’s enough season in front of us for him to break back in a positive direction. Which is why no one sensible has advocated for his termination.

I just don’t see how anyone could sensibly say he’s going to absolutely get the job done either.
One pattern I definitely see is losing to SEC teams by 25+ points.

Who cares about Cade? He obviously made a good choice. Go play for a winner or player for this. Simple really. Not everyone wants build something and that's okay.

I do hope he never gets a national championship though. :)

Probably a good way to get some hate my way, but I'd probably have Majors as the 4th or 5th best UT head coach all-time.

No way is he ahead of Neyland or Fulmer and then it's hard for me to not have Dickey ahead of him as well. Granted Doug was only here for 6 seasons and left us for the Gators...but he won 2 SEC titles and had a great win %

Can't really give Barnhill a ton of respect, just a 4 year coach and he came after Neyland so I'm sure he didn't have much want for talent. Battle was another good one, but he benefited a lot from Dickey and the players he left him. Since in years 4 to 7 there was a big dip for Battle in results, and then he was sent packing to bring in Majors.

But Majors best seasons were from 1989 to 1992...Fulmer was the OC for that same time period.

Looks like a true "5" to me!

Soon to be kicked off of team when police pull him over and he shouts, "We sick Steve on cops where I come from" while bystanders can be heard on tape chanting, "Steve! Steve! Steve!". This marks the beginning of the #TalkShowHostsLivesMatter movement.

Cutcliff was/is a QB guru. The 2 seasons he was not OC for Fulmer our QB play was why the offense was bad. Not unlike what is going on right now. Pruitt's best hope is that Chaney can turn Maurer or Shrout into an average or better QB this season.

Maurer should be average by season's end. He seems to have the right temperament and enough tools. Once he learns the offense better, he should be good. Then he will have Bailey pushing him to get better. Next year should be OK at the QB spot. We should still try to get a grad transfer as well.

Battle was awful. He left the program in the ashes that took Majors so long to clean up.

I mean, he won more in his first 7 than Majors and never had a losing record. But I think Battle's last 4 seasons were more on par with him as a head coach than his first 3 where he was riding the success Doug generated while here.

Majors went 44-35-2 in his first 7 seasons with just .557 for the win percentage, 4 of those 7 seasons were also 6 wins or less. I just think Majors being a former player gives him some blinders. Before Fulmer took over as OC he had just 3 seasons with 9 or more wins, Fulmer as OC they when 9 games in the 4 straight seasons until Majors is let go.
