*Question. Does anyone here know if it's true that Layla's BF told the AD going in that he would only leave to take the USC job? Did he really tell him that? Or was that something that was only said in retrospect?

Been wondering about that for years and never knew anyone who might actually know. I have heard it both ways.

I was a little too young in my fandom to understand what was going on at this time, but after a little digging, I completely understand why we are cursed.. Our administration really was retarded,

My only thing is, UGA did Mark Richt basically the same way? Why are they not suffering?

Because Mark Richt has lost all control of karma.

One of the best win percentages and all-time win/loss record not just in UT history, but all of college football. Wasn't going to "get it back to good" after a single season of 5-7 where he had to replace his entire offensive staff?

I do disagree, and there's nothing "fact" about your opinion of whether or not Fulmer could bounce back the follow season.

2006 when they went 9-4 he lost to Florida by a single point, LSU by 4 and @ Arkansas by 17. Wasn't exactly "losing" his touch.

Shoot if 2007 when we played for the SEC title and won 10 games isn't good enough then you're never going to be satisfied.
He had two 5-7 seasons in a four year span...so not a single season. He was regressing in all areas...could he have turned it around? Sure. But trends could be interpreted as negative. He had been reupped with a lucrative extension so I never bought the vendetta narrative. Simply because the administration tanked his subsequent replacements doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have regressed even further. Can see both sides and it’s a non winner for both.

no bc orgeron has learned how to be a successful head coach at a power program. Coach DL and recruit. Basically what fulmer did her. Coach OL and recruit.
I think you abandoning ship too early on Pruitt. I think that is exactly the reason Fulmer picked him. But I agree with what you say there!

Hamilton actually admitted in an interview a while back that he knew it all ahead of time. That he not only hired him under those conditions but also didn't prepare for that eventuality is extreme incompetence.

Everyone has seemingly forgotten that Fulmer won about half of the big games he could've won thanks to conservative play and the Mustang Package. His win loss percentage is completely different with Cutcliffe versus without him. They fired him 4 years to late and a year too soon as well. The timing was horrible.

Do you think LSU is going to beat Alabama and then those bastards are going to get a bye week again going into the playoffs? And LSU will have to beat them twice to win.

(Of course, one of my points about the difficulty of coaching here is that we might have to play them three times to win out.)

Well if nothing else, eating that lucrative extension buyout would have been enough justification to not fire him the following season after signing it.

That is what I thought! And that means it is 100% on that f---ing idiot Hammy.

The only person who ever really "pulled a Kiffin" on us was Dickey. And so we rewarded him by making him AD! wtf.

Kiffin did a good job and did what he said he would do. And didn't he get suckered play per USC's probation?

No disagreement there. Maybe like Hillbilly, Hamilton thought the right guy was there to transform the program and waiting would “miss the window”?

Fulmer stays and UT has Petty and/or Boyd in that 2009 class too.

Could have been a very elite tenure for whichever of those QBs had taken the job from Crompton.

This is what I keep circling back around to. Plus, I think we all thought Crompton was the second coming of Shuler.

I also can't think about the similarities between Crompton and JG, and how their poor play was an albatross around an entire program.

Nailed it.

To play devils advocate on ham...even Kiffin didn’t think he would get the USC job when it came open lol.
Yes, but Kiffin said upfront that is what he was going to do. I think @UTProf is right that that was all on Hammy. If the fan base had known Hammy was hiring someone who thought USC was a better (or at least preferred for whatever personal reasons) job than Tennessee, and that he had honestly said in advance that he would leave in that and only that case, the sofas would have been burning that day! Because Hammy.
