Well in his defense... We've seen the many replays where there were guys open and JG missed the throw or never saw the open guy... Or didn't get it out in time... That's not on Chaney.

I absolutely agree with you.....

But that didn't happen in the GSU game....the running game was wide open all day long and Chaney kept refusing to stick with it when Chandler and Gray were running well.
He also didn't run any reverses, traps, or bootlegs against GSU to take advantage of their defense selling out on their initial reads--that is on Chaney.

And I've yet so understand what Chaney's game plan was against Florida....and I know that JJ should've caught the TD pass early....

I'm not disagreeing with you as much as I'm frustrated with what I see from our OC.

I'm also frustrated that Chaney--who has forgotten more FB than I'll ever know--cannot find a way to put JG into more successful plays.
He didn't run that bunch package one play that I remember in the 2nd half against Fla when they loosened up into Cover 2 man under.

Bronco was 99-43 at BYU. Already well established as a good head coach. Was practically a foregone conclusion that he would do well at UVA when given enough time.

And I agree with you that Pruitt didn't forget how to coach football. The question is whether he's head coach material. He's never been one before, so we don't know. Right now all we have to judge him on is 6-10, including one of the worst losses in UT football history and potentially our worst season ever coming up.
Nailed it. The qualities of being a good coordinator aren’t really the same qualities that make you a good HC. Some are shared, but all being a good coordinator means is you’ll probably get a shot to be a head coach. As I’ve said, football coaching is a real life study in the Peter Principle. It got Saban in the NFL, and the evidence is mounting that it will get Pruitt at UT.

Fans are so funny and impatient. Incredibly impatient. Nobody wanted Bronco Mendenhall after the first couple years at Virginia. He was labeled a bust my many. Now four years into the program rebuild, a 4-0 start, and he’s this great genius coach Tennessee fans dream of.

Same with Cutcliff at Duke. He wasn’t good enough to be our coach a decade ago. He was old and washed up, we can do better we said. Things started out slow for him at Duke. But he changed the culture, built a respectable program and 10 years later Tennessee fans now wish we had him.

I’ll let some of you guys in on a little secret... Jeremy Pruitt didn’t become a bad football coach after moving to Knoxville. He inherited an enormous mess. Over a decade of bad decisions. And if given time, in a few years, I’d bet other teams would wish he were coaching their team. But it’s doubtful he’ll be given that amount of time by our fans and administration. He’ll most likely be fired this year or next and we’ll start all over again with another coordinator or head coach from a small conference. And do it all over again. The insanity will continue.

I really hope they give him the time. I may not like him personally but we absolutely can not afford to reset again this quickly. It would be better to wait four years and him fail than to do something now because that assures after four years from last year that we will fail. Certain failure is not preferred to what is now the potential to still succeed. I would rather risk waiting 2 extra years than knowing we are going to be waiting four more years for sure after this one. CJP has shown he can recruit. We were top class among those who had not went to a bowl and it looks like we may get that distinction again. Missing a bowl is bad results on the field but does show he is building a better roster. I do not care what Hank says. The attrition rate for Butch while butch was here was going to catch up to him and it did because he has completely proven he is not a good P5 football coach. CJP isn't one now but he is a good recruiter and has room to grown. Big thing is he knows he's got to get better. Butch didn't know that. Butch was always an ego maniac due to his biggest flaw. He was a band guy wanting to be accepted by the jocks.

He has 5 rings. Including two as a coordinator for different teams. Look up the stats on how much better FSU’s defense was with him vs without. Ask Bama fans how much they missed him last year as Clemson embarrassed their defense. You can argue the proven HC point all you want but he’s been a very good FB coach for a long time. He knows more about coaching football than every loud poster on the board combined, including you and me.

THIS x 10000000000000000

He's learning on a very steep curve to be a HC.....
It is MONUMENTALLY STUPID to even try to make a fair evaluation of his abilities so far with the hand he's been dealt at UT.

He should be given thru the end of year 4 IMO at the very least---and I don't give a rat's azz if we finish 1-11 this year, either.
We've sent him out to fight "the hun" with pitchforks and hoes.

The run game needs to be more of a priority. Agreed.

But I've not been near as frustrated about game plans or play calling as I have been about bone headed penalties by veteran ol, bad turnovers by veteran RB and QB and wr... Or just being able to execute some very simple things.... like a swing pass... Or how to split quarters or thirds in the defensive backfield... Or just knowing where to line up...

Or 1-11 the next. It doesn't matter what he does he'll make it into year 4 if he don't win another game. It's the Tennessee way. You don't like people criticizing, Ignore or stay off the forums. It's as simple as that.

I think during last weeks game they talked about how JC and JG meet one on one. They talked how JC can tell what plays JG does not like to run by his response physically and verbally. That says a lot to me imo, the offense is hamstrung not only by bad play but also in limitation to what they run. With the strength of JJ and MC on the outside, you would think we would see more jump balls into the corners when we get into the redzone....but we don’t. I am not even sure we have seen one yet this year. We need more talent, more players willing to play the coaches schemes.

At the end of next season when we still have a losing season, do we extend him? You about have to. I have zero confidence he'll ever get it done here but I understand that you may have to suffer through him. It's a quandary.

Well, I confess that I have an anti-bias concerning Chaney....
I didn't like his hire--and I'm not 100% convinced he was CJP's 1st choice either.

IMO Chaney had the best talent on offense he was EVER gonna have over the last 2 years at UGA and absolutely choked it away in the 2nd halves in 2 straight years against Bama.
He did put JG into enough plays against BYU to win that game, though.
I thought that Chaney called a pathetic 4th QTR in that game, and it got worse in the 2 OT IMO.

The defenses are dictating what throws we're willing to make. JJ has been better out of the slot than outside.

JG doesn't see the field and doesn't go thru progressions well enough or consistently enough to really open things up.

They did not believe that would be an issue this year based on the off season he had.

Can you expound?
I’m still here. Just done with this coach. Said at the beginning I would wait and judge him by what I see on the field. Well, seen it and it’s a crap product. He also did nothing to help a kid we were trying to make a memory for. Coach Fulmer and others came thru but not that stupid gump. He’s an arrogant jerk and if he doesn’t turn it around, I will laugh in his ever sucking face. Hate that my son will never get to experience what other fathers get to like at this ND and Georgia game. Thinking real hard to not donating anything to the program in the future outside of Barnes ( a class act) and the basketball program.

If you’re hung up on this argument that 2-10 to 6-7 isnt a favorable trend compared to 5-7 to 2-10 (possibly), then I don’t comprehend your logic and we are at a stalemate.

If we end up 5-7 then favorably comparing Pruitt’s record to Mendenhall’s won’t feel as much like desperately grasping at straws.
