@hank hill

When you cast shade on ESPN’s FPI rankings in the preseason I dismissed you as a person illiterate in mathematics and statistical analysis. I’m now willing to admit I MAY have been a bit hasty in my judgment of your opinion - but, given this is only week 4, I am, regrettably, not yet ready to apologize.

There are 4 FBS teams (out of the 130 total) located in the indisputably great state of Tennessee. These are how those 4 teams rank after week 4 according to the identified ranking outfit. If by the end of the bowl season this year the mathematics of the ESPN FPI's faith in our team has not been vindicated you may consider this comment as an offer of my apology in advance.

Iirc FPI had overshot our win totals by an average of 2 games/year for the past 3 or 4 years. Looks like we'll do well to even get close that this time sadly

Love watching these very young teams like Arizona State not play like they're deer in headlights. Further proof Pruitt isn't the guy.
They're starting about 13 upperclassmen, roughly same as us.

Skrong defense so far this season though.

A bit sad our D isn't flying around more in year 2 yet. Would love to see a D that just trusts themselves and system enough to play fast and swarm. I still remember thinking that about App St in 2016. A bunch of nobodies shutting us down, swimming by our OL, and a scrawny little freshman manning up our WR1 like he had been doing it for years. That's what I want to see here. Sound, fast, instinctive defense even when we're undermanned. We are still in our heads and concrete footed too much.

3-9 for 23 yards vs the UTC...it can always be worse.

No interceptions. Also, he had a few receivers just not catch the ball and miss timed a TD to Pope in the endzone. But, it’s not like he worked with the 1s every day at that point so it is understandable. (He was throwing to the 1s and 2s in the Chattanooga game)

Now that supposedly each QB is getting the same reps it would be nice to see if Shrout fixed his timing. That is the only thing that is holding him back. He has a strong arm, quick release, and goes through his progressions. If he can get the timing down he will be a good QB. (Maybe we will see him against Georgia)

Pruitt - "Man, you'll have great opportunity at the University of Ten..."

Recruit interrupts - "Georgia State doh."

Pruitt - "My wife done made this here cornbread for you. It’s plumb good”

Recruit - "thanks for coming mr. Pruitt."

FYP

In hindsight he probably should have been hired several coaching searches ago

Regarding Cut, How many times do you think he has been ask? We have to realize, at the time and circumstances, many were ask and declined. Now, unfortunately, many will not have the stamina or willingness to come. I think we have drifted to a different place and time.

I still think we have to grin and bare the situation for this year and nexT. The revolving door for coaches does not work. At some point it must stop.

An explanation by Patrick Brown as to why we haven't seen deep jump balls this year or qb regression. Curious your thoughts on how teams have approached it and what counters would be (swing pass? run more?):

"Tennessee isn’t taking many shots downfield because defenses are playing a lot of coverage against them — rushing three or four and dropping seven and eight into coverage. Georgia State did it to take away those big play opportunities, BYU was in Cover 3 all game and Florida wasn’t as aggressive as Grantham usually is. Makes sense, because Guarantano’s numbers against pressure last season were pretty good and opponents are going to look at Tennessee’s receivers as the strength of the offense and say hey we’re not going to let them beat us with their strength. So they are getting zone coverage with safeties over the top daring JG to go through his reads and see the whole field and a lot of times he’s throwing it into coverage, checking it down short or holding onto the ball too long."

@pismonque question too.

I haven’t went back and watched/studied any of our games but i rememberer saying beside Florida game that i thought they wouldn’t blitz as much tay the game went on as they would just drop back in coverage and dare JG to make cover 2 and 3 beaters. They played Tampa 2 a lot. So i guess BYU kind of layed a blueprint and Florida wrote it in stone so this trend isn’t going to change with JG as our QB.but i also think these are the kind of defenses and coverage we mostly seen last year it’s just Helton did a better job of “staying the course” against them...

This could be a long conversation but i think it boils down to a few things that are really about core philosophies and honestly just patience.

#1 You should be running the Ball against all this cover 2 and 3 we’re seeing. Props to Helton bc in his best games he never strayed from it. I think Chaney lacks patience And abandons it for really no reason. For example:

2018- rushing in what i thought were Helton best games:

Auburn - 35a/70yd
USC - 34a/144
UK - 38/219

While those numbers aren’t eye popping. It gave us way more balance, helped set up play action, kept us in more 3rd and manageable situations, and kept our offense on the field more which helped our defense. I think Chaney did well against BYU doing this and we should’ve won if not for a blown coverage. I thought he went away from it at Florida which put us in a lot of 3rd and longs which forces you to call plays with concepts like flat 7s, deep comebacks/digs and vertices. Which is fine if you have a qb that can hit them but the defense is gonna focus on these to keep from you from the sticks which then leads to hitting the check down in the flat instead which is way more of a threat on 3rd and 6 vs 3rd and 11.

2. The best thing i thought Helton did was find a niche for Jennings as a true bulky slot WR. This is exactly what the cardinals have been doing with fitz and what the Steelers did for Hines ward late. Put him in the slot and let him basically just find little holes in zones. Make an easy throw to him and let him pick up yards. We ran so much spacing and mesh concepts last year which isn’t ideal vs soft coverage but if the defense is gonna give you those easy throws just nickel and dime your way down the field. Then take your shots on short down and distances when your safeties are a little more concerned with what’s happening underneath.

1996 Bama game. For my 16th birthday, my parents got me tickets to the game. I was in the end zone Jay Graham ran 79 yards into to win the game 20-13 after Bama led 13-0. Pretty cool birthday.

That’s the first game I remember sitting down and watching the whole game on TV. I also remember wondering why my Dad hated Alabama so much.

Do they state their formula in which they come up with that. Bc all those other ones are reasonably around the same ranking. That 46 is way off our others

So Wilcox, replaces Sonny Dykes, then goes 5-7, 7-6, and now is off to 4-0 start. Dykes went over to SMU and is now 4-0 after going 5-7 in his first season there. Then theres good ol Charlie Strong down at USF. Goes 10-2, 7-6, but is off to 1-2 start this year. Now Fuente went 10-4, 9-4, 6-7, currently 1-2. So not uncommon to see some regression when a new coach takes over, even in yr 2. What is going to hurt Pruitt is, lets say he wins 4 ganes this season...hes looking at 4 guaranteed losses going into next year (Bama, OK, Ga, Fl). Not alot of room for error.

Moral of the story is there is only a small handful of coaches that are elite and win immediately. So unless your hiring one of these proven guys to get it done right away you really aren’t bettering yourself. Why not keep who you have ? A young head coach who is learning on the job. I would say Pruitt has potentially top 10 upside. Let’s move on and ride it out. I think we could be in a good spot by 2021

I hate Jeremy but love Tennessee. I’m conflicted because would love to see him fired but would hate it because him failing is horrible for the program I love. Just going to back away and watch and enjoy the show however it plays out with no emotion while I wait for basketball. Much like watching a drama on TV.

Why do you hate him so much? Other than starting 1-3, I remember a few posts where you can feel it coming through the screen.
