Recruiting Forum Football Talk II

Funny how the narrative has flipped from that...to now Pruitt is in an impossible situation with this roster. Especially with the media and Rucker’s article.

I remember a lot of the media guys said the floor of this year was 7-5 bc the schedule was so easy.
It may sound crazy, but after seeing a few games, opinions changed! We suck again!

How do you all feel if, say, we start 1-7 and end up something like 2-10 or 3-9, and Tee is promoted to head coach with the intent to keep the entire staff?

Better or worse than a full coaching search?

Would feel better than if that full search resulted in a random coordinator I have to google. I hope neither scenario happens though.

From UTK in the FF:
The talk of UT football being dead is ridiculous. The fans are the University’s eternal hope. We’re the best fans in the country. We won’t let it die. We will cycle back up. No team stays down forever. What are we going to do? Like, leave the SEC for the Sun Belt or something? Hard work. Determination. Belief. Those 3 things will get us there. It’s a recipe as old as time.

Saying the same ish over and over while no one cares, and it’s not worth a hill of beans anyway.

Drum beaters just like to make noise and be loud. There is no point to it. No goal, just noise.
Keeps tricking me into thinking I'll never get caught up. But by the time I finish scrolling past drum beating and names I'd never read before last month, not too bad at all.
Like skipping telemarketers on your missed calls list. Boom, done.

I guess I should have been clearer. To everyone's point, I think he's very valuable and deserves to make more than he does. I'm big on analogies. If you are a real estate agent, and you can only sell 25 houses per year, would you rather be selling houses with an average price of $100,000, or houses with an average price of $1,000,000? Neids has no problem selling either product (and the people he's selling to can afford houses in either group)...I would bet he'd rather sell the $1,000,000 house than the $100,000 one.

I hope I'm wrong, he's worth his weight in gold.
And I'm big on loyalty. How many people go from Grad Assistant to on field coach at a school like UT? Pruitt gave him that shot and it paid off. Why go to another situation making around the same or less. Stick with the guy who gave you that shot and fulfill whatever promises you made to him when he took that chance on a unproven up and comer.

Little fantasy football advice requested

Two little known choices but both have been solid so far

Pick:

Chris Godwin Bucs (listed as questionable)

Or

Marquez Valdez-Scantling

When this team eventually improves, and I believe it will(not sure if it'll be under Pruitt but it will happen), I hope we schedule them again and run the score up to high heaven.
No matter how much you blast them next time, that victory will remain with a program like this forever. They are still trolling despite being blasted since then by smaller schools. Should tell you all you need to know.

Bucs play the Rams

Packers play eagles tonight

That’s why I have to decide today

I really like the MVS matchup tonight. I would like to add him myself, but not sure if I would start him over Robert Woods and Calvin Ridley. I feel like I'm flipping a coin every week and no matter what I decide it's wrong anyway

Woods is killing me this year. I want to bench him but I know it would be just my luck that I bench him the week he drops 20+

Experienced head coaches only going forward from now until we've forgotten what it's like not to go to a bowl game.

And sabotage the program completely? Fulmer has his place in UT history. He was a great coach in the '90's and he deserves every ounce of respect for that. But that was then and this is now. Fulmer taking over would hurt the program. The publicity would be brutal, and interest in the job would drop even lower. That is not the answer.
No sh-t. But I think Tee is less of an answer at this point.

It's pointless to try and figure it out or predict what the team might do. Maybe they'll play UGA close and build some confidence... or maybe they'll suffer the worst loss ever in a too-red Neyland and become even more disheartened. Maybe the young guys will step up and become vocal leaders... or maybe we'll see more shoulder slumps and head hanging. Maybe they'll stay healthy and get mentally tougher... or maybe they'll get so banged up and beaten down, the tank just runs dry. Maybe we'll finally get production from the QB position... or maybe that will turn out to be a big gap in the roster. We could even see walk-ons. Who knows? It's an unpredictable team in a bizarro season that nobody wanted.
Great post. This is where I’ve been and why I’m not around as much. There’s no point in the daily arguing of what ifs, why’s, how’s and coaching searches.

It sucks but nothing we can do about it. No point in spending hours every day on message boards raising your blood pressure with pointless arguments. They’ll get it fixed or they won’t. Bottom line is it’s going to take longer than we all thought. Buckle up, watch the games, cheer on the team and spend more time doing other things. JMO

Except Wes is specifically targeting the 16’ and 17’ classes which he has seen play and practice for 2 and 3 years but now he’s acting like “duh everyone should see that Pruitt has nothing there” while at the same team picking us to win 7 or 8 games before the year....which virtually every vol media person did i think. those classes aren’t loaded by any stretch but they Do hold a majority of the best players on this team at certain position groups.

Nieds isn't going anywhere. just gave him $150k raise, and Pruitt and Fulmer know he can't go anywhere.

the roster has issues. it's good to very good at the oldest spots (15 class) and good to very good at the very youngest spots (19 class). lotta meh in the middle. this really isn't debatable. the 16, 17 classes weren't great. top end was good, but in that 16 class...here's your top 5 highest rated guys for all the star gazers that think we have all this talent that's just being wasted:
Nigel Warrior, JG, Kongbo, Tyler Byrd and Callaway.

next 5: bituli, marquil osbourne, ryan johnson, CFA, alexis johnson.

2 guys out of those 10....?

2017...top 5...Trey Smith, Ty Chandler, Maleik Gray, Eric Crosby, Will Ignont
next 5....Jordan Murphy, Labruzza, Bumphus, Butler, Kivon Bennett

maybe 3 or 4 if you want to count the recent contributions of Bumphus and Bennet........?

i'm leaving the 18 class out for now simply because there's several red shirts involved, and it'll be better judged next season. but i dont' think i'd be going out on a limb in saying that there's some questions in that class too.....

aside from Jennings and Taylor, the lone leftovers from the 15 class, out of these 20 kids, this is the group we should be seeing leading the team, setting the tone and being significant contributors or starters...that are PRODUCTIVE.

there's just not enough of them...and way too many "busts".

i'm not telling you i think the coaches are awesome. i am telling you that the roster is #1 on the list of things that needs fixed before we do anything--specifically DL/Pass rush and QB. and firing pruitt now doesn't help with that....if nothing else, i think he and this staff have at least shown they can evaluate and recruit. so let them continue to do that.

if this thing continues to go south, well, there's only way it ends anyway. in the meantime, we should be doing whatever we need to to rebuild the roster....and i'm sorry, all the coach and player bashing in the world just doesn't do a thing to help in this regard.

so if for no other reason than that, we need any and all reasons to believe in the future.....it's gonna be the 21 season before we're able to a) judge progress from now to then and b)see what the direction really is.....this is assuming Pruitt isn't fired. i don't see us signing an instant impact, top 5 type class this year, so you take the foundation of this 19 class and foundation of the 20 class, and you have develop the rest....and that just won't happen overnight.

if he is fired, then it's 22 or 23 before we get answers to those questions, depending on what year he's fired....the new guy will have the same problems, with what would probably be a patchwork 20 class, and he'll likely have a frankenstein roster of CBJ, CJP and the new guy's kids on it.....

either way, i think i'm more convinced now than i was before, that this is a longer rebuild than many thought....there is no "just get a good coach and we'll be instantly better" fix. that's just dumb. it's at least as big a gamble as keeping CJP for any extended period of time....we haven't gotten our first choice when the situation was better than it is now, so i don't know why there's still a notion we could go do it this time around, when the situation is what it is currently...(roster questions, leadership questions, booster questions etc...)

Pruitt isn't perfect, and he's made too many mistakes. no one can really aruge that. but most of what we're dealing with, and will be dealing with, is situationally driven...and having an understanding of the situation (or at least a willingness to acknowledge that it exists) would go a long way with how most of us react to what's going on right now. you factor in ESD and the 25 cap rule coming in to play at the exact same time we hired this guy, with the need to flip the roster, well, those two rules don't exactly help a program/coach in our current predicament....we're at leat 2 cycles of 25 away from doing that.

no one should be happy with what we're having to deal with........again. and no one should think things SHOULDN'T change. but there are things that can be changed quicker than others....and we're seeing some of that already take place with the portal, and i'm sure we'll see some more at the end of the season as i would expect a couple coaches to change.....

there's a realistic way of looking at this situation and how to approach it....and there's a very trollish way to do it.....you decide which is which....

nb4 tl;dr.... :)
Fantastic!!!

Of course they are. Fulmer wouldn’t fire Pruitt until after early signing period because he knows the only way we can survive is recruiting. Not that he will be fired, but his job would not be the safest if we only win two games. I only pray this team finds itself in the bye week and decides they have nothing to lose and plays all out. We can win 4-6 games if they get it together. And that would be the best thing possible right now.
agreed.

Chris Godwin Bucs is a clear favorite over Marquez..but Chris did not practice again today. Why not try and pick up Sterling Shepard..Giants and hold him in reserve since Marquez playing tonight
