He’s still cutting checks regardless. The best argument for trying to fix what can be fixed and recruiting like hell is that nobody's going to pay Butch $200K a month for the next 17 months plus buy out this staff. Pruitt's contract has no offset and our extravagantly-paid coordinators are under three-year deals. Anybody know any boosters who're going to cover that plus the cost of a new high-ticket staff plus facilities improvements? There might be one.
So we'd better raise the Titanic.
Yes a QB changes everything....Chaney's hands are tied with JG...You have to have play makers and develop those who are....We have to hope we have a Dobbs-like game changer at QB on the team or in Bailey.
QBs change everything.
I simply will not believe Jim Chaney is an idiot.
You could make valid points either way on firing Pruitt. I know, right now, coaching isn't good enough. He's put himself in a very vulnerable position. Could he grow as a coach and be better in, say, 2 years and have this team where it needs to be? Sure.Probably not. But we’re not talking about what they’re going to do, really. We’re talking about what they should do.
exactly. it's not about who said yes....as much as it is who all said no....and that list is long and distinguished....unfortunately.Yeah but a major reason we would up with those hires is because we could not lure a coach with decent credentials to come here. You think that will change? Cause I sure as hell don't.
No way he ponies up after what happened with Schiano. Hell he hired Freddie Kitchens as an NFL coach
This statement tells me all I need to know. Pruitt is here 5 years regardless of record.Nobody's going to pony up this year. Boosters and donors are tired of the non-stop calls for money. UT is still trying to fund stadium renos and other facility upgrades.
It's no accident that Pruitt's, Chaney's and Ansley's contracts were written the way they are. They're handcuff deals.
A good coach wins 6 games last year, 6 or 7 this year, and probably 7 or 8 next year.
We’re not competing for championships nor are we competing with the big dogs on our schedule. But it’s way better than this.
it's just a loaded statement and is like "no ish sherlock".A good coach wins 6 games last year, 6 or 7 this year, and probably 7 or 8 next year.

Because Tennessee fans dont actually care about winning in basketball. We love seeing a fun and competitive team but we arent going to throw public protest when they arent good. Barnes is perfect for Tennessee because he always has a good team and no one will care if he can't win the big game.If it did nothing to hurt the basketball team why would it hurt the football team?
Also, Barnes would have needed to go something like 12-18 and 8-22 or something to be in an equivalent situation to Pruitt. He improved from year one to year two and beat ranked teams along the way, including UK in year 1 and year 2. Barnes also had previous success at Texas and his personal resume is better than UT's entire basketball history. Pruitt hasn't done anything except coach defenses loaded with 5*s. Completely different situations.
That isn’t justification for keeping a bad one.
“Great recruiter” is overselling what he’s done here.Well, yeah it is. If the bad coach happens to be a great recruiter, then he fills the team with top notch players. Not saying keep him for 5 more years but 2 more years and the roster is better. Look, I get it but there’s no proof that anyone at TN can identify sell and sign a top flight football coach. There’s 0 trust.

there are still interims at key positions of leadership. and Fulmer isn't going to be the AD for 10+ years.I would like to see what Fulmer could do from the start of a search and not at the just get a guy point. He is a respected member of the coaches HOF, In my opinion he has done what he could to help Pruitt. He has raised money for assistants. Went out and got Chaney from UGA, Brought Tee home from USC, In my opinion he has shown that this new admin would be more willing to help then the old.
I just looked up the Chaney and Ansely contracts. The hilarity of deciding to write a blank 5 year check and handing it to this guy is truly the peak of UT incompetence.
A top 5 class right now is not beating those schools next year either. All that’s fine. But nothing less than a top 5 national class allows us to bridge the gap of bad coaching the current roster has been getting. Obviously a top 5 class isn’t going to happen.
The writing is on the wall here. There’s no way out. A top 15 class would be fine. But it doesn’t beat Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, or Alabama next season. And we’ll find 3 other losses elsewhere.
