The best argument for trying to fix what can be fixed and recruiting like hell is that nobody's going to pay Butch $200K a month for the next 17 months plus buy out this staff. Pruitt's contract has no offset and our extravagantly-paid coordinators are under three-year deals. Anybody know any boosters who're going to cover that plus the cost of a new high-ticket staff plus facilities improvements? There might be one.

So we'd better raise the Titanic.
He’s still cutting checks regardless.

$15M is the buyout for Pruitt and his staff.
1) not all of that is paid by boosters, you know that. $15M is not a truly significant amount of money when the stadium is 75% full for the next two seasons.
2) I don’t think the entire staff would be fired.
3) you’re going to have to pay a buyout in a year anyway.

We have to hope we have a Dobbs-like game changer at QB on the team or in Bailey.

QBs change everything.

I simply will not believe Jim Chaney is an idiot.
Yes a QB changes everything....Chaney's hands are tied with JG...You have to have play makers and develop those who are....
I loved the fire in the eyes of BM....the moxie and the spunk...the team responded immediately...
I don't care if he throws 4 interceptions one game as long as he improves the next game and the next and the next....
I think Pruitt better make the change this bye week...
We are getting improvement at some positions...

A good coach wins 6 games last year, 6 or 7 this year, and probably 7 or 8 next year.

We’re not competing for championships nor are we competing with the big dogs on our schedule. But it’s way better than this.

Probably not. But we’re not talking about what they’re going to do, really. We’re talking about what they should do.
You could make valid points either way on firing Pruitt. I know, right now, coaching isn't good enough. He's put himself in a very vulnerable position. Could he grow as a coach and be better in, say, 2 years and have this team where it needs to be? Sure.

Yeah but a major reason we would up with those hires is because we could not lure a coach with decent credentials to come here. You think that will change? Cause I sure as hell don't.
exactly. it's not about who said yes....as much as it is who all said no....and that list is long and distinguished....unfortunately.

No way he ponies up after what happened with Schiano. Hell he hired Freddie Kitchens as an NFL coach

Nobody's going to pony up this year. Boosters and donors are tired of the non-stop calls for money. UT is still trying to fund stadium renos and other facility upgrades.

It's no accident that Pruitt's, Chaney's and Ansley's contracts were written the way they are. They're handcuff deals.

This statement tells me all I need to know. Pruitt is here 5 years regardless of record.

Maybe, just maybe, a good coach also loses to Georgia St and BYU. Maybe they also lose by 25+ to 10 teams. You just never know about a guy until he has 6 years to recruit HIS players. The current players are Butch guys who are playing bad on purpose.

it's just a loaded statement and is like "no ish sherlock".

we need a good coach. brilliant.

we alos need a qb, dl, safeies, lb's and more OL, and we need to repalce all our WR's...and we need another big time RB.....

you've been out on pruitt since day one and you're hear trying to collect on your i told you so's. that's it.

"we need a good coach"......

you say wiht a good coach we get back quickly...what exactly does that look like? year 1? 2? when would said "good coach" get us back?

and who is this good coach gonna be? and how are we paying for it? and how is he going to manage a roster with CBJ, CJP, and his players on it?

how does he do in recruiting when he's hired at the end of november and has a week to either hold on to the core of this class or recruit one of his own? how does he do with the limited talent pool after the ESD?

but...just go get a "good" coach. they're on treed like apples. just "get one".

lol.

If it did nothing to hurt the basketball team why would it hurt the football team?

Also, Barnes would have needed to go something like 12-18 and 8-22 or something to be in an equivalent situation to Pruitt. He improved from year one to year two and beat ranked teams along the way, including UK in year 1 and year 2. Barnes also had previous success at Texas and his personal resume is better than UT's entire basketball history. Pruitt hasn't done anything except coach defenses loaded with 5*s. Completely different situations.
Because Tennessee fans dont actually care about winning in basketball. We love seeing a fun and competitive team but we arent going to throw public protest when they arent good. Barnes is perfect for Tennessee because he always has a good team and no one will care if he can't win the big game.

That isn’t justification for keeping a bad one.

Well, yeah it is. If the bad coach happens to be a great recruiter, then he fills the team with top notch players. Not saying keep him for 5 more years but 2 more years and the roster is better. Look, I get it but there’s no proof that anyone at TN can identify sell and sign a top flight football coach. There’s 0 trust.

“Great recruiter” is overselling what he’s done here.

Yeah that lack of interest in winning is why the fans created a petition to bring back our most successful coach ever that attracted so much media attention it caused our Sweet 16 coach to leave us for Cal. UT fans absolutely care about basketball. We have among the highest attendance in the nation.

I would like to see what Fulmer could do from the start of a search and not at the just get a guy point. He is a respected member of the coaches HOF, In my opinion he has done what he could to help Pruitt. He has raised money for assistants. Went out and got Chaney from UGA, Brought Tee home from USC, In my opinion he has shown that this new admin would be more willing to help then the old.
there are still interims at key positions of leadership. and Fulmer isn't going to be the AD for 10+ years.

there are plenty of red flags for a prospective hire to be wary of, especially one that could get a gig at a big time program.

The hilarity of deciding to write a blank 5 year check and handing it to this guy is truly the peak of UT incompetence.
I just looked up the Chaney and Ansely contracts.
Chaney's buyout for leaving Tennessee is 60 percent of his remaining salary if he leaves before Feb. 1, 2020, and his buyout drops to 50 percent of the remaining salary if he leaves after that date.
They both have this line right here in them. 60% of 1.5 mil per year is a lot of money.

All that’s fine. But nothing less than a top 5 national class allows us to bridge the gap of bad coaching the current roster has been getting. Obviously a top 5 class isn’t going to happen.

The writing is on the wall here. There’s no way out. A top 15 class would be fine. But it doesn’t beat Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, or Alabama next season. And we’ll find 3 other losses elsewhere.
A top 5 class right now is not beating those schools next year either.

Had all gone well he was 2 more classes out from contending with the elite anyway with top 5 classes.

Yes. Eventually whoever the coach is here is going to have to get solidly in the top 10 in talent every year.
