I think Larry is discounting the fact that coaches around the country know that UT has been down primarily because of poor coaching hires. Rick Barnes is actually a very good counter example to what he's saying. Rick came here, got everything he needed and then some, and is having a sort of career renaissance. Got lured by UCLA and stayed in Knoxville because we ponied up for him.

IMO there isn't a single worthwhile coach in America thinking "boy, Derek Dooley and Butch Jones got a raw deal. They really had something going at Tennessee and got the rug pulled out from under them." And if we fire Pruitt at 2-10, there won't be a single coach going "wow, Jeremy Pruitt got a raw deal. He went 7-17 and got fired. What fantasy land are they living in in Knoxville?"
If Barnes were the football coach he would have never had a chance. We would trying to fire him after he was 3 games below .500 and had a losing record in the SEC after his 2nd year. When the media picked us dead last in the SEC heading into his 3rd year there would have been so much noise around the program and locker room issues that you would never see that breakout year.

That’s just plainly not true. This roster is just as good or bad as it was when Pruitt took the job and Leach and Doeren both wanted it after a fan coup.

Pay the money, give the resources for staff that Pruitt is getting, and you will get a good, established head coach.

I think the general consensus would be that Pruitt is a god awful head coach rather than "Tennessee doesn't give people enough time". If we fired him after two 5-7 seasons I could see it, but 5-7 and possibly 2-10=fired isn't going to scare anyone away.

Do you see any evidence that the admin. is capable of hiring a good coach?
I would like to see what Fulmer could do from the start of a search and not at the just get a guy point. He is a respected member of the coaches HOF, In my opinion he has done what he could to help Pruitt. He has raised money for assistants. Went out and got Chaney from UGA, Brought Tee home from USC, In my opinion he has shown that this new admin would be more willing to help then the old.

I think we'll lose some, but the core seems committed. Bailey and Mays are the glue. Lose them and the whole class probably collapses. I'm sure we're resetting the board. Guys we slow played or were down the board will become viable targets. No doubt our pitch has changed significantly.
Need to keep all the in state guys and Bailey

We have to hope we have a Dobbs-like game changer at QB on the team or in Bailey.

QBs change everything.

I simply will not believe Jim Chaney is an idiot.
He’s not. Really should have been 14-7 us to start the 2nd quarter. JJ drop / INT and missing DWA wide open. Totally different game if that happens.

It might be different if Dooley and Butch were successful elsewhere. But Dooley is an OC and Butch is an intern. We made the right decision by firing those guys.

Bingo

We would not give Leach or Doeren a chance here either. I would love to see the public lashing of Leach after he says something witty because hes not focusing on how to make sure his defense doesnt give up 70 points to UCLA.

Fulmer already passed on Leach once, would he really give TN the time of day the next time around?

I want to know where Fulmer's mind is. I don't think he'll fire a coach after year 2. I don't think he'll do it after year 3 either.

I’m not saying Leach specifically. I meant a coach winning 9 games a year in a power conference wanted this job. There are more of those guys out there.

If it did nothing to hurt the basketball team why would it hurt the football team?

Also, Barnes would have needed to go something like 12-18 and 8-22 or something to be in an equivalent situation to Pruitt. He improved from year one to year two and beat ranked teams along the way, including UK in year 1 and year 2. Barnes also had previous success at Texas and his personal resume is better than UT's entire basketball history. Pruitt hasn't done anything except coach defenses loaded with 5*s. Completely different situations.

It's crazy. There's a portion of the fanbase, that claims to know everything, would have UT suck forever.

Yep and part 2 to my post. If most of the upperclassman leave. And the two deep becomes 90% Freshman/Sophmores what chance do we actually have in November. Yes they are more talented but this is the meat grinder of the SEC their bodies aren't going to hold up. The freshman wall that Taylor and Thompson hit last year would be the whole team at this point. We need the upperclassman wether we want them or not.
i'm not sure, but given who we play the next 3 games, by the time we get to November, if we're not playing for the future i'll be a little bit shocked. and it won't matter what our record is. this year would become a defacto developmental year. like it or not. but this season...isn't about w/l's anymore. it's about how do you keep and continue to build on this class and get this roster ready.

if you find yourself in games you can win late, obviously you try to win as many as you can, so don't get me wrong. we should be trying to win....i responded to your post with 'needing something good quick'...well, they need it...but they're not going to get it, at least quickly.....

but 2-6 is the absolute best we could be thru 8 games....i mean..........................ugh.

Martavious French and Bryson EAson............c'mon down!
:)

Hire a good coach and it turns around quickly. Keep hiring bad ones and we’re on 4 year cycles.
