Who has a better season? Chizik weighs in (surprise?)

Chizik was asked who among the 2nd year coaches in the SEC (UF. A&M, TN, MSU, OM, ARK) who would have the best season?

Chizik says Tennessee. Expects Pruitt to have a big year.

Still think 8-4 is the Floor...

I might have thought that before Gooden's injury...or the probability that Solomon won't be granted his waiver...or with Trey playing for a while being an uncertainty. I think the floor is lower now.

8-4 is possible but saying it's "the floor" is a big stretch.

The floor is that JG gets injured early, the O-line continues to struggle through the first half of the season, the D-line holds the D back and we go 5-7. That's a disaster scenario, sure, but that's "the floor."

Given the schedule, 7-5 would be impressive. 8-4 would be great.

Given the schedule 11-1 would be great, 10-2 would be impressive, and 9-3 would be Pruitt beating every team hes supposed to beat.

That doesnt matter to me. We have more talent everywhere than Missouri and should beat them. Florida will be favored at home too, but we are very close to them talent wise. I would not be surprised one bit if we won at the swamp, in fact I expect it.

5-7 is the floor again. 8-4 is not the ceiling, it’s the rafters in the attic, perhaps the shingles on the roof.

Agree on the 5-7 scenario. 7-5 is where I think we end up. 8-4 would be sweet. Like 5-7 but the opposite, 9-3 would take something out of the ordinary. I don't think we see 9, but I do think that is our "rafters or perhaps shingles on the roof" ceiling.

Perhaps rethink how you stated your premise. I get the rationale in part, but when did you think that Solomon would vs. would not be granted his waiver, or that Trey was or was not certain to play? The jury remains out on both. Nevertheless, don’t give way to doubt on UT with or without those two proven players. Younger players may emerge proven in the year. Even without Gooden, Solomon and Smith, I think Chizik is still making a reasonably calculated prediction.

This isn’t a murderer’s row of a schedule, cupcake OOC and Miss St from the West who lost everyone and has no one behind to replace. Name four teams on this schedule that has more talent than UT. There isn’t four. Year two is the ‘magical’ year for the good coaches. Year one is a throwaway as you are establishing your culture and the way you play. Year two is show me time. If you have more talent than the opponent, then you should win, right?

No reason a team with way more talent should lose to Ky Vandy UAB Ga St BYU Chatt Miss St. Mizzou SC Comparable to UF and less than Bama and UGA.

9 of 12 talent goes to UT, UF is comparable and less than the UGA/Bama combo so gave losses to the last 3 in comparable talent and one game hiccup from the under talented 9 (most likely Missouri). If UT loses 2 of those and finishes 7-5 or worse, UT hired the wrong coach.

Solomon being granted his waiver wasn't as critical until after Gooden's injury and left UT with almost no experience on the DL. And as you yourself said...

Younger players may emerge proven in the year.

And then they may not as a collective. The learning curve is not likely to be at the same pace for everyone of the new guys. Some may quickly emerge, while it will likely be slower for others.

Yes, we all hope the younger DLs will improve, and probably will ,as the season goes on, but it's difficult when your entire DL is on a learning curve during the season. I expect the OL to be better, but being dependent on freshmen again is a real concern.

Ad I have no problem with what Chizik said; I think overall the team will be improved, my pushback was against secking's statement that 8-4 is the floor. A lot of people on here seem to think UT will be much improved and that teams like Vandy, UK, Mizzou, and Miss St are suddenly going to suck again, and I have no idea why.

If JG goes out first game, floor should be 6-6. We can win 6 with Maurer or Shrout under center. Schedule much easier than last yr. Could win 8 even without JG, Trey, and Solomon. We have talent in every position. Just not a lot of depth. I think our conditioning and talent will overcome lack of depth. Losses to Fl. , Ga, and Bama, with a loss to tossup Mizzzzzzz or MSt.

This is a great thread to bring out the negs.
Keep it going boys!
Should be a celebration of a good year, there is NO reason why this team isn’t going to a decent bowl. UT fans enjoyed the 9-4 teams, it was only 3 years ago. Pruitt told a recruit if they weren’t 9-3, that he shouldn’t come to UT bc the coaches weren’t doing their jobs. I’d expect 10 next year.
