Way too soon to really have this conversation, but you can see Shrout has a huge arm. Just as big, if not bigger than Guarantano’s.
That’s a small part of the position, but he can really sling it. At this point in camp, you have to give Shrout the advantage based on his experience and having almost a full year longer to learn than Maurer. Maurer also definitely needs to add some weight. Guarantano looks like a college quarterback. Maurer still looks like a high school quarterback. Shrout is kind of in the middle.
We haven’t heard anything really since Maurer arrived about the status of the competition.
Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney was just kind of teaching the offense this spring; it didn’t sound like the competition had really started in earnest. And the Vols have had only two practices in pads at this point.
UbbenTo circle back to the bottom line of your question, I’d say Shrout has the narrow edge in what’s still a wide-open competition based solely on his “experience.”
I think JT gets the #2 spot regardless. The risk is a much higher price to pay with BM at #2. He’ll almost definitely burn his redshirt in mop up duty and if he turns out to be what a few of us believe he will be it only hurts UT in the long run losing his last year of eligibility from burning his RS. If the coaches are playing the long game then it’s possible they may be thinking the same way. I think BM only comes off the bench this year if JG gets hurt and going to miss significant time.Posted in the JG debate thread but know many avoid it like the plague. I like to keep up with backups a just in case and we hardly ever get info. Thought some others might be interested.

I think they both will be 2A and 2B their entire 5 years if they stay. If JG stays healthy the next 2 seasons and HB is as good as advertised it will not surprise anyone if neither ever have much of an impact in Knoxville.I think JT gets the #2 spot regardless. My personal opinion means jack but there are a lot of fans that may be shocked next year to find out that HB will have his hands full in beating out BM. I think it’s funny that there are so many fans that put so much emphasis in the services rankings but many of them don’t believe in the service. Odd huh? Don’t be fooled by an underrated recruits ability. They were underrated because the services don’t do as thorough of a job as you may give them credit for. Which is where the term “underrated” came from.I think they both will be 2A and 2B their entire 5 years if they stay. Services have nothing to do with it, talent generally always makes it way to the top. HB is the more talented HS QB playing a much tougher division than BM with better results and there is no reason to believe that he won't be the more talented of the 2 once he gets on campus. AFWIW services are generally right more than they are wrong, especially at the QB position. There may be bigger bust and a few unknowns that had big success but they are far and few between. Neither of our 2 backup QBs were ever recruited as anything but projects and backups. You've got to be a special talent to play QB in the SECMy personal opinion means jack but there are a lot of fans that may be shocked next year to find out that HB will have his hands full in beating out BM. Hate to tell you that qbs are the hardest to evaluate and therefore the most over or under rated coming out of HS. I have nothing against JG but we have a perfect example on our own roster right now. He’s better than he’s shown but he’s certainly not the #1 DT qb in his class when some would legitimately argue he’s not a DT at all. I can tell you it’s a different animal in Florida vs GA when it comes to HS football and BM played on a bad team by Florida rights. HB put up great numbers while playing for a team that was great by GA rights. I can also tell you that HBs team waxes the floor with BMs team if they played given the fact that his def allowed 45 points a game ave last year. But HB never put up those numbers without a great team around him where BM scores 40 tds in 10 games behind a line that makes ours look all pro. You could be right..... I could be wrong. Right now it’s all a matter of opinion.Services have nothing to do with it, talent generally always makes it way to the top. I just have to know. There are a lot of fans that like Bailey DESPITE what the services assess as his talent level. Shrout’s “underrated” too while you’re dipping that wide brush. My personal opinion means jack but there are a lot of fans that may be shocked next year to find out that HB will have his hands full in beating out BM. Florida is a little faster and a tad more aggressive. I’ve coached in Florida for many years and given the fact that I now live in Georgia and still love HS football I go to a game nearly every Friday night. I think it’s only natural to compare when you’ve seen both.I just have to know. What are the discernible differences between FL and GA HS football?
I would possibly agree with that if he had more than a year of starting experience in HS. Given he hasn’t and the numbers he put up in his 1 year seems like he’s about right to me.There are a lot of fans that like Bailey DESPITE what the services assess as his talent level. So there’s more unknown and that includes top end potential. Talking about a sieve for an OL! Maurer had an opportunity to progress and learn from past errors. What if he’d been graded on his first season starting?I would possibly agree with that if he had more than a year of starting experience in HS. Then I would agree with his rank and star rating. I’m not taking anything from JT at all. He just never got the experience that most qbs do. Not his fault. So there’s more unknown and that includes top end potential. Talking about a sieve for an OL! Maurer had an opportunity to progress and learn from past errors.
