Vandy sucks

Hopefully, the team will not be as ready for the season to be over this year and actually "give their all for Tennessee" vs Vandy.

The point is that there is ample evidence to believe that that is all behind us now. It has been a dark point in vols history but it's behind us now.
What in the world evidence do you have of this? Current head coach has never been to a bowl game and is 0-1 vs Vandy. Recruiting has been middle-to lower third of SEC.

By no means am I attempting to disparage our team or roster, but I want to know why some people argue that everything is on the up. Share with me so I can be encouraged, too!

In spite of Vandy losing 7 games last year, the team didn't quit on Mason, and they were competitive in every loss but two last season. He may never be able to get the talent he needs to make more of Vandy than it is, but regardless of the overall record, his teams perform about as well as you'd expect given the recruited talent levels.

Still hate them, and all 356 members of their fan base.

I'm not big on Vandy at all. I am big on Stanford though and that's where Derek Mason came from to Nashville. The guy can coach whether you like him or not. Can you imagine what he produces if he had our talent while their HC?

Would you say the Auburn win is evidence that he is capable of coaching the Vols to play better than they did against Vandy last year?

I do say that is evidence that he can.

My brother at the NSD19 lunch in Memphis said to JP that he had to make beating Missouri(He lives amongst them.) as important as beating Auburn. If my son that lives in Nashville had been close by he would have added Vandy. Had I been close by I would have said Miss St for this year and I’m sure one of my other brothers there might have just explained to him they are all important and to figure out how to beat everyone on our schedule.

There is evidence he can win, he just has to put it all together and make it happen. Week after week and year after year.

I like his chances and expect him to figure it out.

I agree that they suck... there is no getting around it. Derek Mason is just 24-38 as the head coach at Vanderbilt. They have lost at least 7 games in each of his 5 seasons. That record will get a head coach fired at literally any of the other 13 SEC schools. However, it also emphasizes what a shameful and sorry state any program must be in, to lose 3 straight games to them by an average of 18 points per game.
Yep.

IMO, a huge reason, maybe the reason, why Mason is still there is because he's gone 3-2 against Tennessee. Think about it...he needed a final game victory over us in 2016, 2017, and 2018 to make bowls.

So yes, they do suck, but we suck even more, and unlike Vandy we're actually trying to have a good program. That's why it's so pathetic.

After reading there was evidence things are improving, I tried to think back to last year and remember what evidence I saw. Many point to recruiting, many to S&C improvement, many to the staff, and others as above, the Auburn win.
As a VOL fan I see all these things and imagine an 8-4 or 9-3 season. At the least A BOWL GAME. However the realist side of me as a fan who enjoys college football and watches other teams, looks at the VOLS compared to reality. The reality is the SEC is super tuff. Good recruiting is at best middle of the pack. Every competitive college team in a major conference has a great S&C program (the vols have just been below average). Every good SEC team has an excellent staff and most have a more experienced HC. Lastly the Auburn win was not a sharp upturn in the program. They later layed eggs against Missouri and Vandy. And one or 2 good wins does not a staff / program make. Butch Jones beat a top 10 USCe team and won 9 games for two seasons.
Lastly as a fan, GO VOLS

I was reading through vandys roster and projected two deep and noticed they have a ton of grad transfers and a surprising number of Junior college transfers (Surprising for vandy anyway.) It looks like Mason is trying to put a bandaid on the results of some really bad recruiting classes. This temporary fix isn't going to work and will hurt them more in the long run, the vols are about to surpass them in a big way and I believe we have many years of beatdowns to look forward to.

It shouldn’t matter what Vandy does and we shouldn’t even be concerned about any of their activities. I I have stated in other posts, we should NEVER lose to Vandy under any circumstances. Butch, talent levels, recruiting - none of this can be used as an excuse anymore. Take care of business and put them away like we are supposed to.

Honestly, at the time, that was an astonishing win. Of course, Auburn tailed off afterwards, and we absolutely crapped out at the end. We all know we were playing against a stacked deck, especially at the line positions.

I ABSOLUTELY believe it is possible that CJP can coach our guys up, develop talent, and start winning games against better talent. But, there isn't any evidence of that yet, which is why I remain cautious in my expectations. One certain factor that can increase our chances is to recruit AT OR ABOVE our rivals, but that hasn't happened yet.

I'm all Vol and really, really hope we are all on cloud 9 by season's end.

You could be right to dismiss the Auburn win. I dismiss the Ky win.

He’s on record recently saying this is the best team he’s had a Vandy thus far. Perhaps he thought they were “close” and needed some transfers to plug some holes for a “big season” which gets his contract extended.

I agree with your bigger point though, don’t se how they get better or sustain anything with those methods. It’s long past time that Tennessee surpasses them and starts beating the hell out of them down again.

Not yet it ain’t.....there’s literally no evidence at this point. Start beating them on the regular again, then it’ll be in the rear view mirror. But not yet.
