If Fulmer had fired Clawson mid season, would he have never been let go?

He still was deservedly fired

Nope I will never believe that and you can believe it and accept this poor piss team we have had the past 10 years.

Once again Fulmer last six years

49-27. For an average of 8.1 wins per season. Three 10 win seasons and one 9 win season.

Last 10 seasons

62-63. 18 of those wins in two seasons. Which means 44 wins in 8 years for an average of 5.5 wins per season. Zero ten year seasons and six losing seasons.

YES HE DESERVED TO BE FIRED!!!

This isn't three decades ago. 8.1 wins now or even a decade ago is not what it was three decades ago. 8.1 wins per season out of a 10 game schedule would be considered pretty good. Not so much during a 12/13 game season.

Where’s the part that 3 out of 6 years he won 10 games. So let’s settle for 6.2 wins the past 10 years. That is awesome. Once again a great choice to fire him.

Better taking the chance to get/better and not able to do it than to do nothing (keep Fulmer) and be exactly where we are now.

Instead of making the correct changes then, everybody and their mamma, grandmamma, aunt, uncle and mother in law would be asking "why didn't we fire him back in '08"!

Fulmer would have never lost like we have besides if he had a couple of more losing season he could have been fired. The supposedly correct change has turned into a complete disaster and it could continue to go down.

He still didn’t have back to back losing seasons
His last two seasons without Cut were disasters. Was Cut coming back again? Obviously not, so that leaves the inescapable conclusion that going forward had he stayed things would have been about the same as they have been.

Appreciate what he did, believe he should have been given the chance to turn it around, but dont think he would have. The 3 straight terrible recruiting classes torpedo'd this program.

Two of his last four seasons are EXACTLY like what we have now!!!!!

The recruiting class you talk of Fulmer had little to do with them. Most of the first class were red shirt so he did spend two years with them. The other one he had one year with and the other he left before he had time to do anything with it. Dooley could not develop and neither could Jones.

As much I completely disagreed with the firing and told administrations how I felt I did and do continue to donate each year and started going back to games in 2015 on a regular basis.

Guys saying "it was time"...but time for what? The worst stretch in Vol history? Cuz that's what Fulmers firing ushered in basically. It was a rash knee jerk firing of Fulmer. He would have brought us back and regained stability in the program....instead of what we saw happen after he was fired. Huge mistake to fire Fulmer and to think "oh...we're so much better than this guy".

That is very true but the other side of this is this was the start of having to pay huge buy outs from one coach to the next.

I dont see how people say with certainty that he would have brought us back when the main factor in his success was not in the formula going forward. If you look at the constants, with and without Cutcliff, that was the determining factor imo. Recruiting had dropped off in consecutive classes and talent was down across the board.

I still think he should have been given the chance but I dont think he would have succeeded.

I would have gave him a few more years because what we know as a fact. The last ten seasons 62-63 with six losing seasons. But hey the bright spot is we are 3-1 in bowl games since he has been gone. Possibly should have been 4-0 with a win over Tar Heels.

So you’re saying he sucks as an AD?

No. I think that comment came from a poster talking about the correct change at the time was to fire Fulmer. He went on to say that if Fulmer hadn’t been fired and the correct change had been made people would be questioning it today if Fulmer had continued to lose.

“It could continue to go down” was yours. I’ve long ago conceded that Fulmer has been impressive making the big decisions. Guess I can be talked out of it. 🤔

With ultra talented teams and Cutcliff as the OC in 07 and we still lost by 6 tds to a 4 loss Florida team and 24 points to 6 loss Bama team.
Another thread going on here says that was due to third and Chavis!
