If Fulmer had fired Clawson mid season, would he have never been let go?

Feel is subjective of course, but personally my feelings on the two are different because I had higher expectations for that 1997 team than I did for the 2007 team. I think the 97' campaign is remembered more fondly because of what happened in 1998 than it would be standing alone. Again, I'm not giving that championship back and I'm proud of our team, but we didn't pass the Ric Flair test (we didn't beat the man, who was UF at the time), and we got embarrassed by Nebraska in the bowl game, and that was back when bowl games meant something.

Not sure I agree with that - I was only 10 when that 1997 SECCG happened and I remember it very well. Both the 1995 and 1996 teams had national title aspirations as well, but neither of those teams even won the SEC, much less a national title. At least the 1997 team won some hardware. Even if a national title wasn't won in 1998, people would still remember 1997 fondly.

That Nebraska team that blew us out was in the midst of one of the greatest runs in college football history and we were a decided underdog going into that game. The year before, they beat a Florida team that we lost to by 25 by 38 points.

2007 team had a top 10 pick and 3 NFL draft picks from that year. No counting the future Vols that would be drafted in the 1st round. Eric Berry, Dan Wiiliams, and Arian Foster.

Who did this team have that was drafted?

That Nebraska team was quarterbacked by Scott Frost. Florida won the national championship the year before, you are thinking of the 1995 Nebraska team with Tommie Frazier that beat Florida badly (who in turn had beaten us badly).

As to the 1997 season like I said feel is subjective. I was 20 and when Peyton said he was coming back for his senior year, we thought the sky was the limit, there were not a few people who thought we had missed our shot after 1997. That's one of the things that made 1998 so sweet.

Just because his replacements have not fared better does not mean Fulmer's firing was not justified!

If you really want to go that directions, all you have to do is look back at the end of his tenure and realize he is the reason the program is in the shape and situation it is, in!

Yes, our concept of what is disappointing has nosedived since we fired Fulmer, that's kind of my point. In 2007, folks were bummed that we went 6-2 and lost the SEC Championship and we had 3 draft picks. In 2018, we were 2-6 and had 0 draft picks. And instead of losing to UF and Bama by 59, we lost to them by a combined 73, and lost to 4 other teams by a combined 106. Like the sarlaac from Return of the Jedi, the last 10 years have taught us a new definition of pain and suffering.

I guess it is but if you are a life long vol fan a coach that wins multiple SEC titles and a national championship along with going 100 over 500. I would a vol fan would at least like the guy and realize what he has done for the program. Like I said Fulmer is legendary to the University of Tennessee.

That’s right he wins the East then has a losing record of 5-7 and we fire him. Good job Hamilton. Here is another point we shouldn’t have fired him. Hamilton gave Fulmer an extension after the 07 season then had to buy him out in 08. A coach like Fulmer with that extension he should have stayed another year or two just to burn up some of that contract.

Instead of asking whether Fulmer's job would have been saved had he fired Clawson midway through the season, the better question would have been would Fulmer still be coach if he had actually let Clawson do his job and stopped restricting his offense from day 1. What the hell good does it do to bring in a new offense, but only allow 1/2 of it to be implemented? Regardless of the false narrative vols fans have created around Clawson, the guy is a very good coach. Remember when we lost to A&M 38-45 a couple years ago? Wake Forest beat them 55-52 in the Belk Bowl that year. Just sayin'

I appreciate what he did and Im happy he's the AD now. I never disrespect him or talk bad about him, other than I never cared for him, and when I say that it's different from saying I never liked him.

I don't appreciate the way he got to be HC and everyone can say it was Johnny's fault until they're blue in the face.. #1. it doesn't matter if Johnny came out today and admitted it was all on him, I can't change how I felt for nearly 30 years. #2. I don't believe it was all on Johnny. Lol.

Anyway, it ain't a big deal. I'm sure he and everyone else will be just fine with me not being his biggest fan. Gibbs is around somewhere to handle that.

I don’t blame you for that I don’t like the way he got it either. Fulmer started off the year 5-0 and when Johnny came back he went 0-3. Was that Fulmer doings as he was the offensive coordinator I don’t know. But I do know his health played a big reason why they didn’t let him come back. Even the dr who released to come back told Johnny to decide his future carefully. Now the old man is still alive and doing ok but what would have happened if he had a heart attack in the middle of a game?

No...because that’s ONE QB. Petty would have been the second to yank back and forth depending how well or not so the previous play had gone. Ala Ainge/Clausen/Ainge/Clausen Ainge no Clausen I mean Ainge. Or Crompton/Stephens/Crompton/Stephens/Stephens...timeout Coleman. Couldn’t stop himself by that point. Love him hate him Kiffin said Crompton and let it ride. Kid had a decent season not looking over his shoulder. Don’t believe Fulmer could stop himself at that point.
