The way I see it, letting Barnes walk or terminating him wouldn’t be the best case scenario for the program.

You either take a chance on an up & comer whom you hope will work out because he’s unproven at the big stage or you go after a big name head coach.

Only problem with that is, they’re all settled into their selective schools that’s a bigger national brand in basketball compared to what we got here.

Ain’t no amount money is going to sway them to come here so this whole “We deserve an Elite Coach” is being unrealistic.

It was a dumpster fire only a couple of years ago.

I had my doubts, but the man has done his job. He took Tennessee out of the abyss and has made them a relevant program again.

The abyss???? Dumpster Fire? Tennessee made a S16 in 2014 when Barnes was hired in April of 2015. Tennessee wasn’t in a good state but we weren’t 2004 Baylor. What a terrible take.

You do this every single time it is so annoying.

Poster: Makes a criticism of Barnes

You: “OH YOU WANNA FIRE HIM AND HIRE AN UP AND COMER THAT IS A TERRIBLE IDEA.”

Just because somebody makes a criticism of Barnes doesn’t mean people think he should be immediately fired.

Baylor Basketball in 2004? Dumpster Fire

Was it a good spot when Tyndall was fired? No. Was it gonna take years and years to fix? No. It took Barnes 2. And he’s a good coach but not a miracle worker.

Why is everyone hating on Barnes after one of, if not the best seasons in UT basketball history? I expect some drop off, but still would bet on us making the tournament this year. This past recruiting cycle in addition to what looks like one of the better classes in program history means the futures bright even if we didn’t get Blackshear.

Yeah and a guy with 600 wins and three regular season conference titles took the job within a week. If it was such a dumpster fire Barnes wouldn’t have taken the job.

If Texas hadn’t fired him for Shaka Smart, your point would have had a chance to be valid.

We didn't have 3 NBA players back then either...........Barnes developed them into NBA players over the next couple of years. Perhaps some of the new guys have the same potential. Plus I've seen Bowden show up on a couple draft boards.

The good news is because of the size of rosters and the high turnover with the NBA, transfers, etc., it's possible to turn a program around quickly.

But, the perception that Tennessee ran off a Sweet 16 coach (with some believing race was a factor), then Tyndall. It was a mess.

I don't think anyone was thinking #2 seed and conference titles within 4 years, dumpster fire or not

Not trying to be mean, but nbadraft.net is a bad source. They’ve been bad for a few years.

Burns hasn’t played a minute of college basketball and was being run off this weekend by the board. I’m not going to say he’s anywhere close to a guy that could be drafted.

Which coach did you say to hire instead of Barnes, and what is their record since? Coaches weren’t lining up at the door to come here. Barnes has done a really good job here, there’s really no arguing that. I’d say he’s done better than any reasonable person could have expected a coach to do given the situation. I expect he’ll continue to do a really good job here going forward.

Tennessee was on their 4th coach in 6 years, 2 of which were dismissed with show cause penalties. It was worse than you are leading on. That Sweet 16 was a distant memory, even just a year later, and all the key players from that team were long gone.

I wanted Brad Underwood (which has not worked out that’s why I’m not an AD) and a couple others (Id have to look at my list again). Either way, if Barnes truly thought this place was a dumpster then he would have sat out a year and tried next year to find a job.
