VOLS w a lot of momentum on the recruiting trail right now...

Crap, I never knew freaking crappy Missouri was a "big game we aren't supposed to win". How far we have fallen.
I wouldn't even be that impressed if they beat Florida. It's not like Florida has been a powerhouse in the last decade.
Man we suck as fans.

To be fair it is not like Missouri has been relegated to the cellar since joining the SEC. Their development of players is admirable and they usually field a respectable team. UT should still consistently be better then them, but Missouri is no slouch.

8 or 9 wins is delusional. You people are setting yourselves up to be very disappointed.
Not really. Unlikely? Probably. But "delusional"? No.

You have to overestimate the opponents to get there. "If" QB and OL improve by a reasonable amount and the DL is "good"... there are 9 winnable games on the schedule. UF would be reach but possible. UGA and Bama are all but out of reach.

The 4 OOC games should be wins. I know BYU is dangerous but they're also undermanned even with UT as it is now.

MSU is the most winnable West game UT has had in a while... including last year's win over Auburn

USCe and Mizzou simply aren't world beaters. They are about what they've been which has been good enough to beat UT... but they don't look better and may be a little worse.

UK lost most of the guys who made them look competitive- Snell, 3 of their top 5 receivers, 5 of top 7 tacklers, 22 of 38 sacks, 7 of 9 INT's. UT beat them last year and should beat them worse this year even if UT doesn't improve. Vandy is similar.

Pruitt still has to be a good coach. Some players and units have to take big steps forward. But it isn't "delusional" to think it happening is within the "reasonable" realm of possibilities.

I think this year will be similar to last year, unfortunately. Still think we are 3 years away from winning 9 or 10 games and challenging for the East.

If the 2019 team isn't at least a couple of wins better and doesn't pass the "eye test" for competitiveness against the upper echelon, it will be the beginning of the end of CJP. The team has to improve every year. I'm not one you set time limits or win counts, but the team cannot tread water.

It’s not like they are some SEC powerhouse but since joining the conference they have stepped their game up quite a bit.

The posts on here get to be a bit much. We have recruiting momentum? We're like the 9th best recruiting class in the SEC and the others are just getting better. Are we gonna land some more good recruits? Probably, but so will everyone else ahead of us. And now its a big deal to beat Missouri who lost their QB and lost their former head coach? I mean yeah for a team that cant beat Vandy that may be a solid win, but to claim that its some kind of bench mark is just a sad commentary on the (still down and not looking up after 10 years) state of the program.

IMHO, it was simply timing. When they joined the SEC, the almost impossible scenario of UGA, UF, and UT being down at the same time happened.

If UT gets its act together... Mizzou is battling USCe, UK, and Vandy for 4th place on a year to year basis.

You also have to factor in that more and more of Pinkel's players are moving on now. For MU to find two coaches in a row with a knack for finding 2* gems... isn't likely.

Climbing back to the top, in my opinion, takes a few steps:
1st. Beat Kentucky and Vanderbilt with the games never in doubt.
2nd. Beat the likes of Missouri and South Carolina (and maybe talk trash to Muschamp). Make Florida beat you, don't beat yourself against them.
3rd. At least a 50% chance against Florida, be favored when playing them at home. Competitive with Georgia and Alabama.
4th. Ready to play anyone, anywhere at anytime and put genuine fear into the opponent.

Progress will be taking the first step this coming season, that needs to happen. I hope to take the first 2 steps this coming season, but will be happy with beating Missouri or South Carolina and not beating ourselves against Florida.

I am on record repeatedly as never buying in for a second either with Dooley or Jones; I wasn't even in on Kiffin. While Pruitt was not the level of hire I had hoped we would make this time, I did feel he had credentials that our last few have not had, and along with those credentials, potential for turning this thing around. There were a couple games last year where for the first time in at least a decade, we actually looked well-coached.

All that said, none other than our current HC, when he was hired, did not say we would be right in the middle of the second tier of recruiting; he didn't say we might eventually pull in some decent recruits but no promises. He stated in no uncertain terms that UT would soon - not years down the road, soon - be at the very top of recruiting.

It can be said without qualification that that has not happened, and is not close to happening.
If you don’t think the 2019 class we just signed coming off 5-7 ( before Chaney , Tee or Ainsley were even here ) was an excellent class , you are quite naive. Add in 5 star DT and 4/5 star CB and wow

I don't mean to attack you from the flank when you are trying to make a point with someone else but the 2019 class was good, not excellent. Maybe excellent considering the last 10 years of Tennessee football, especially the last 2, and I am really happy with the class for sure. But you need to measure our class against that of our rivals and when you put our class next to the classes signed by Alabama and Georgia there is no way you can consider it an excellent class.

1+2 this year would be nice.......3 and some of 4 next year.

Nice post by the way.

Tell me how you measure classes before they ever play a down?

Would you prefer “highly unlikely”? Sorry you didn’t like my adjective. I’ll put it this way - if the Vols win 9 games, Pruitt should be named National COY and be given a 10 year extension. How’s that?

The last time TN was really good, I was a middle aged man. Last week I filed for Medicare and Social Security. How much more patience do I have to have?
Can't say for certain but i feel like we got the right guy in place. I have a confidence that i never had with the last three coaches. All we can really do is trust our gut and hope for the best.

You have partially answered your own question, it's been quite a while since Tennessee actually fielded a very good team and it may be several more years before they do so again, unfortunately.
In between now and then we may see some bright spots, but fielding a really good team, well, that's entirely a different matter
