UT finished dead last in Total Offense in the SEC last season.

UT finished 13th in Points Per Game in the SEC last season.

I won't mention the porous Defense stats.

UT should win 6 games this season, and with some Luck, 7 wins are possible.
This is the correct assessment. This is a total rebuild.

Everyone has passed us by in the East. It's going to be a slow climb.

Just getting 6 wins this year would be a outstanding coaching job. Anyone shooting for more than that is delusional.
BS! Not that we will win 8 or 9 for sure, but the schedule if favorable for us to win 7 or 8 for sure if things fall right, it's certainly not delusional. If we don't win 6, it will be very disappointing for sure. This team isn't going to be as bad as some think. But time will tell, but please just stop with the delusional crap. GBO!

So I read the title of this thread and got excited, thinking we must be in the top five or something of the like, considering even during the Dooley and Butch years we landed some top-ten classes. Then I go over to 247 and see we're ranked...

27?

And there are UT fans that think that's good?

We're ranked behind the likes of Northwestern, Georgia Tech, and Wake Forest. That is not good by any standard remotely related to football at the University of Tennessee.
You miss the point of that UT staff is on a lot and I mean a lot of big time players that love what is goin on in Knoxville right now. Lot of good vibes around the Hill

Really? We have 4 out of conference wins we should definitely get. Then after that you think it’s an AMAZING job if we only win 2 out of Ky, -who we beat and is losing a lot of talent. Vandy- Yes Shurmur got the best of us but now he’s gone and we have a coach who won’t put up with that ****. W
Fla- Yes we got killed but - the turnover it’s a completely different game.
Miss St- we beat Auburn who is better then them and will beat them because we will be even better this year.W
GA- yes we should lose this, but who knows? That’s why they play the game on Saturday
Bama- Got a few more years of catching up.
Mizzou- We have the talent to win, should be close and could go either way.
SC- Should’ve beat them last year and it’s been a long time coming. We understand the philosophy better. W
So with that we better get to 6. I don't think it’s a miracle to get to six with the man we have in charge. The last ten years have really screwed with our mentality. But now we have a great coach and will be pleased with the results if 6 is the new damn ceiling. 7-8 wins this year in regular season is my prediction .9 is more like a hell of a job and the fan base is stoked. Then we kick butt in a bowl game! I know We have a lot of ground to make up put Pruitt is filling the gap and doing it faster then we’re gonna expect. What your saying isn’t crazy, I guess Im more optimistic this year or I just really believe in general Pruitt.GBO!

Pruitt has the recruiters in place. We just need to win and show we’re headed in the right direction. This year is the make or break year for Pruitt imo.

Dude. It is year two. This is not his make or break year. They gave him 5 for a reason. We are headed in the right direction if we win 6+ games and keep the same staff until the next year. His 5th year is his make or break year, but I think we could be really good next year especially with the possibility of Fromm going pro and Fla, Missou having to play first year starters vs JG his senior year and an OL stacked with seniors.

Won’t be make or break for Pruitt, but our record this year may make or break our 2020 signing class.

I think this year will be similar to last year, unfortunately. Still think we are 3 years away from winning 9 or 10 games and challenging for the East.
I think we can get to 6-6, possibly 7-5 but they must re-establish some home field advantage for that to happen. We have been losing far too many "pick 'em" games at home lately. In other words, they must beat UAB, BYU, South Carolina and Vandy to get there. It's possible.

I would agree with the posters who say this is NOT a make or break year for Pruitt contract-wise. I doubt UT will do anything with Pruitt to end the contract early absent a catastrophic collapse (I'm talking a 2 or 3 win season).

That said, I think this is a de facto make or break season for his rebuild. Not necessarily number of wins-wise, but improvement wise and perception wise. If we win 6 or 7, but play hard in every game with notable improvement across the board, then I think Pruitt and staff can ride that to a good 2020 class and we are on our way. If we stumble through like the previous few seasons and win 6 with blowout embarrassing losses where the team quits, I think that Pruitt is gonna have to be a miracle worker to create real change, and he will just play the contract out.

This is a big season for him. And I have no doubt whatsoever he is well aware of that and planning accordingly.

8 or 9 wins is delusional. You people are setting yourselves up to be very disappointed.
I normally don't disagree with the off-season pessimists but "delusional" is too strong, in this case. There is a path to 7 regular season wins with home wins over Georgia State, BYU, Chattanooga, UAB, South Carolina and Vanderbilt and a road win over Kentucky... throw in a bowl game win against an unknown opponent and you have yourself 8 wins. It may not happen but it doesn't take any great leap of faith to get there.

...and as for being "very disappointed"? Give me a break, we are Tennessee fans. We can handle disappointment. It comes with the territory.

I hate this mentality. I've seen us win a national title, including an amazing run from '94-2004, and the 2015 and 2016 seasons still delivered some of the best moments of my fanhood. I enjoyed the hell out of the gator, outback, and music city bowl wins. We did not suck in 2016 or 2017. We had some bad coaching and a bad break or two, which kept us from 10-12 win campaigns. In 2016 I think Dobbs accounted for like 12 less yards than Peyton's best season at UT. Those teams were ridiculously entertaining.

I just said this 1998 was 21 years ago great team but that's a memory now, its a generation passed, I like Josh Dobbs he helped win some games when he was here and there were others but do not tell me the teams Butch Jones put on the field were good teams THEY WERE NOT it was smoke and mirrors and the mentality I have is I want to see a winning program again
we are not there yet it will take time and I hope it happens SOON, thinking or talking about the team in 98 is not helping the team 2019......................GO VOLS

Tennessee, to a large extent, recruits itself. Why our fans want to discount this, and instead credit whatever new coach happens to show up, is beyond me. The combination of our history, fans, facilities, and conference, will place any coach worth this kind of salary in the top 15 without even trying.

I'm Vol fan and its not good. Vols have a long way to go, SEC is not sitting waiting for Vols to get better. The entire conference is better and they are stockpiling talent
even Vandy I hate to say is much improved and have beaten Vols 3 straight years I don't think that's happened before in my lifetime. Its not good Vols got dig outta this hole.
I think current coaching staff can get job done but THEY NEED PLAYERS to do it .

Nebraska says hello, along with Minnesota. If you stay down long enough, you may never rise back up.

Every year since I can remember, regardless of who was the coach, we have been "in on" a number of big-time players. Making the final ten of a recruit's list and getting the signature are worlds apart, and it has been a long time since we regularly beat out UA, UGA, UF, LSU, etc. for those top recruits everyone wants. Until we start doing that again, we won't be back.

Yikes, your analysis of what was said hits about as far from the mark as possible.
You specifically stated that the 2017 team "did not suck." They sucked worse than any other team in UT history, by the very objective standard of the results they got. You also made a comparison of Dobbs to Peyton in the context of the 2016 team being a good one, by your implication; compared to any team Peyton played on, they were miles and miles from good.

I am on record repeatedly as never buying in for a second either with Dooley or Jones; I wasn't even in on Kiffin. While Pruitt was not the level of hire I had hoped we would make this time, I did feel he had credentials that our last few have not had, and along with those credentials, potential for turning this thing around. There were a couple games last year where for the first time in at least a decade, we actually looked well-coached.

All that said, none other than our current HC, when he was hired, did not say we would be right in the middle of the second tier of recruiting; he didn't say we might eventually pull in some decent recruits but no promises. He stated in no uncertain terms that UT would soon - not years down the road, soon - be at the very top of recruiting.

It can be said without qualification that that has not happened, and is not close to happening.

Maybe I AM the one who is delusional but I nominate we wait till after fall practice and maybe even a game or two and see who’s healthy, who’s depth is good, who’s QB has matured over the summer, who’s OL has stayed intact as well as DL ...well surely y’all understand my point. I know this has become our Volnation past time to drive down stakes with no variance on how many wins we’ll have come fall but games are never won in June 😬😬

That's rude, obviously he cares about you and wants your happiness more than anything else.

I guess hes fine with 5 or 6 wins since he won't be disappointed with it. Maybe Ill try that and see how it works. I'm gonna predict 5 wins and that's what I expect us to win. If we win 5 I'll be happy, but more importantly.. I'll be right!!!!
