I know several who became addicted to hydrocodone when given them after surgeries/chronic conditions. They didn't drink or mix with other drugs. Certainly didn't want to become addicted or plan on it. Also know several that took them and mixed with other things but didn't become addicted. Always thought it had to do with the gene.
I did forget that, my apologies.
I've heard it referred to as "addictive personality".
But it's also my understanding that people that have a genetic disposition for addiction, can do so with any such substance.
I.e. pain medicine isn't unique or worse than any other in that category.

Possibly. What I think it comes down to in the long run is whether u really like they way they make u feel or not. I did and lost control of about 3 years of my life. Probably not that simple, but in my case, it was
Fortunately for me I hate the way they make me feel, and I need a bottle of Benadryl for each one.

At the risk of forum meltdown, I think the addiction/danger level of the other 2 has been greatly exaggerated.

Like my dr told me, *IF you don't drink, mix or have tendencies to abuse amounts, the only thing they do is make you hurt less. He was right, at least in my case.
Which if you ever follow up on the tragic stories on TV, the unfortunate person involved was virtually always doing one of the above.
Yeah some people just have an addictive gene. Where any little thing can cause problems. Luckily it seems like you don't.

Runs in my family, and, yes, doesn't really seem to matter which substance.

Sorry to hear that sas. I definitely understand and hope nothing I said bothered you. After the hoops I had to jump through, I'm just mad at politicians using it for platforms and the media for their usual antics.
Check family history, monitor usage. Don't make people in pain suffer for votes or ratings, was my intended target.

Dope is dope. It's been around since dawn of humanity. Opium is in many forms, and its all addictive.

Here in NE TN pills are getting harder to get, so heroine is prevalent. Other side of that is people are mixing meth and other stuff together, gravel?

Addictives will do anything to get high.

No, didn't bother me at all! Was just saying what my experience was. And I wish politicians would not feel the need to think people need their help....which never ends up helping. All it does is cause the ones who need help with pain to suffer like you said. Small town so I know a lot of people that manage to get pain meds for free which they don't need so they sell them. Also know so many that have had to suffer because of regulations! My friend's husband had to have both kidneys removed. They sent him home 2 days later and told him to take Tylenol!

Yeah, that's why any "crisis" war is pointless. I've seen at least 7 in my time and when you make one drug less available, another quickly takes its place.
We need to work on the cause and stop wasting time on trends.

Look up what Portugal did to fight addiction.

@Ulysees E. McGill does advocate work for people I believe. (Where is he?)
When I was having to prove that your insides dissolving is indeed painful, I did some research.
There's several Physicians and groups finally pushing back on the extremist laws. Calling for more common sense versions that don't let those in real pain, suffer.

I have been prescribed and agree with you. The opioid epidemic is overblown. I’m not saying that some don’t have issues with it; just saying it is exaggerated. Humans can become addicted to nearly anything: Alcohol, nicotine, sugars and starches, porn, gratification from social interaction on the internet or in person, Florida Gators dumpster fires, etc.

Hopefully, common sense will prevail soon. Unreal what my cousin with pancreatitis goes through trying to prove she needs pain medication.

Disagree. It doesn't affect some people as bad but it's not exaggerated or overblown. It is a huge issue that is costing this country a lot of pain and money.

You’re likely right, but it has made it much more difficult to get for people who could actually benefit from the pain relieving effects. The regulations are extremely tight now from what I’ve seen and Doctors are skeptical of patients looking for drugs. I’ve been prescribed them a couple of times for long-ish term treatment and stopped taking them after a few months on my own each time. That’s my experience.

The regulations aren't the issue though. They are a response that has become necessary because of over prescribing.

Regulations are almost always part of the issue.

That said, why are they over prescribed?

There’s an underlying issue here that has nothing to do with the substance.
