It's amazing what people leave middle school with.

I always played sports / had friends, but starting in college, I'd get these really dark, overwhelming thoughts related to failure and disappointment.

They left for the most part in my late 20's. Hunting and fly-fishing had been my primary hobbies since I was a kid, but picking up cooking (something I wasn't naturally good at) and seeing a little bit of progress when I hit the kitchen, has really helped me get out of my head.

truly, and I mean this, cooking is one of the great depression killers. A) it requires enough thought to get you out of any negative thinking and B) the end result is delicious

I feel that creative endeavors should be pursued, and cooking is one of the most satisfying. Too many people set "big" level dreams/goals, and increase their depression or anxiety because those things are hard to accomplish.

You should focus on the little victories. Instead of saying "I want to learn to play the guitar" set it as "I want to learn to play this chord or this scale" you line up enough of those small steps and you will have accomplished the bigger goal without even realizing it.

It's why cooking is so great, you simply want to learn how to make steak. It's something you can learn and accomplish in little time. Then you move on to the next meal.

gimmie a grille, some meat, a cooler of beer and blue tooth speaker and i can guarantee you my mood improves.

Give lump a try. Smoke opens up a whole new world.
I have been looking into that. We moved down to Jacksonville and decided to rent rather than buy and sell at the same time. When we search for a house, a grilling area will be something I have an eye for and a smoker will be purchased.

Lol. Fun isn't on my itinerary but definitely won't feel like I'm shoving the kids in a closet for the trip. They'll really like it and that's worth everything to me. They've been through enough.

I won't forget that @jakez4ut

Old Smokey 22 in. Charcoal Grill in Silver-OS#22 - The Home Depot
I'd recommend this to get you started. It's the best bang for the buck, has the best name and ultimately once you move on to a larger style you can use this for a camping grill (it has 2 smaller sizes available).

Firm believer that vertical smokers are the simplest design and work the best with less fuss needed.
