@ChattaTNVol killing it! This blue chip ratio highlights something I've thought for a while though, that LB (& RB) were two of our strongest positional groups. I like the secondary, not a ton of blue chips sure but it's imo our strongest positional group coaching wise having 2 elite level secondary coaches on staff elevates that group to me.

I'm excited for ball this year!

Agreed! @ChattaTNVol, not sure if you have this and already posted, but i'd be interested in seeing the blue chip ratio of your projected two deep. I'm guessing that for bama and georgia it's pretty much 100% and would be interested in how we stack up.

@ChattaTNVol did you count Alontae and Thompson as blue chips? I was thinking of them as examples of how Pruitt has taken guys that weren’t viewed (at least by me) blue chips, but turned out to be. Can’t wait to see who that is this year. Harrison? Simmons? Means? I’m in for the Pruitt experiment, ready to watch this rebuild.

TL:dnr - If all goes well and everyone on the roster (including Anthony Harris) is healthy and eligible this is what our blue chip ratio looks like by position group based on the summer roster posted at UTSports.

Worst (or at least less favorable) case situational scenario for our offensive line this year:

I don’t think the freshmen tackles have a choice. They’ve got to get up to speed and be as ready as possible for game 1. They’ll have 3 non-conference games to take their lumps and improve before we head to the swamp. In this scenario we assume Trey Smith is not cleared to play this year and that Brandon Kennedy is not fully recovered from his 2018 ACL injury. That gives us Morris at left tackle with Jahmir Johnson backing him up while starting at left guard. The utility guy on the line this year coming out of the spring was thought to be Carvin. If Morris goes out, Jahmir slides out to left tackle and Carvin comes in at left guard. Ryan Johnson would start at center with Carvin backing him up. Carvin could start at right guard but the buzz in the spring was that Calbert, now fully healthy for the first time in his career, was doing well there. At right tackle we have Wright with Niehaus backing him up. That gives us a 7 man rotation and doesn’t include Tatum or Locklear which could get us to a 9 man rotation. Even without Trey and Brandon, I think with the added talent at the tackles and the added experience and offseason work by the interior guys, the offensive line play will likely improve by a decent measure this year. There were periods last year where they did a decent job but overall the consistency was missing from one game to the next. We were in a new system and over the course of the year our lack of depth and development really showed as the starting guys would get banged up. I don’t think there’s any question that we would have an even better offensive line if Trey Smith in particular is healthy and cleared to play. Brandon Kennedy, as a minimum, gives us added depth to the most cerebral position on the line at center. I think the absence of Richmond’s leadership may be another factor that allows the offensive line to move together in a more positive direction with Friend & Chaney’s coaching this year. jmo.

Worst (or at least less favorable) case situational scenario for our defensive line this year:

Aside from Gooden the most important player on the defensive line this year may be Savion Williams. If he fails to live up to expectations we don’t really have many options to compensate. In this scenario we assume Aubrey Solomon is not granted his waiver to play this year. We need Williams to come in in the mode of Gooden from last year, ready to contribute right off the bat. The third guy up front will likely be Butler. Ideally, Middleton would compete for that spot but I haven’t gotten the sense that anyone is really expecting that. The backups on the defensive line will likely be Mincey, Kingston Harris, and Emerson, all really young guys. Bumphus made some noise in the spring and given that he is a year older that could be helpful. I think he may have surprised the coaches a bit because he actually got their attention when he was moved back over to the defensive side of the ball. ESPN had him rated as a 4-star athlete out of high school, rivals had him as a 4-star WDE, and 247 had him as a 3-star WDE. Butler was another guy the recruiting services couldn’t reach a consensus on. Rivals had him as a high 3-star SDE, ESPN had him as a 3-star defensive tackle, and 247 had him as a 0.9100 4-star SDE. Emerson was viewed by all 3 as a really impressive talent for the defensive line and then his injury at the opening knocked him out of his senior year in high school and he redshirted last year. ESPN had him as a 4-star defensive tackle, rivals had him as a 6.0 4-star SDE, and 247 had him as a 0.9500 4-star SDE. His name began to pop up some in this year’s spring practice reports so hopefully he’s working his way back into form. We really need him to continue to progress. He’s obviously still young but I’ve been thinking he may be our best candidate as the defensive line’s utility player this year. Rocker and Ansley really have their work cut out for them this year in their effort to try to field an SEC quality defensive line. It’s not impossible but with the lack of elite talent I think it’s probably an uphill climb. jmo.

Regardless of how all this shakes out I think this could be a really fun year and the reason is I think we're going to see a lot more of our guys "playing the right way" in Pruitt's 2nd year, with discipline and attitude, especially in the trenches. jmo.
Nice breakdown. Hot take. Niehaus surprises after putting on 40 lbs and holds off one of the freshman, probably Wright, and allows him to develop as the primary RT backup.

Which isn’t an attribute at RT whatsoever.
What I’m saying is his strength is his best attribute right now and outpaces his footwork/agility. I wouldn’t rule him out as a tackle but to me it seems more likely he starts at guard. Like Chaney used Cade Mays last year.

LT: Jahmir
LG: Darnell
C: Kennedy
RG: Carvin
RT: Wanya

If Trey can't go I could see this as well. Not that Darnell can't be a RT (he can) but more to make the overall line balance better. Ya want the guards to be the "elite" strength/agility guys on the line if you can.

I think Jahmir & Wanya are both starters somewhere on the line, but depending on a few other things the other 3 could be pretty wide open.

I like that line up but I think it's going to be hard for Darnell to uproot Ryan. Not saying he can't just think it'll be at least mid year before he does

Could be wrong, but I think they want Carvin to emerge at Center. Kennedy and Johnson both are gone after this season. So wouldn't surprise me to see Carvin as the #2 Center and not starting as a guard.

My personal dream line-up (highly influenced by getting experience for folks as well as being the best oline too)

LT: Wanya (Jahmir)
LG: Trey (Johnson)
C: Kennedy (Carvin)
RG: Calbert (Johnson)
RT: Jahmir (Wright)

Options to expand it past this 7, but I like the idea of giving Calbert, Wanya and Wright the opportunity to earn experience since they all 3 will return next season. I also like letting Carvin be the #2 C and focusing on being groomed to be the starter. Jahmir is our best utility guy I think, but him starting at RT would be key to allowing Wright to have more time to get ready.

Wanya coming early is the main reason I think he starts over Wright, but by all accounts Wright may end up being the better Tackle once all is said and done.

Chaney/Pittman had better options. There’s a reason Wanya logged the most time in Spring at LT and Jahmir Johnson at OG. Wright’s footwork is just as advanced as any other candidate at RT and more importantly the guy he blocks goes the other direction. By the middle of the season, both freshmen man the tackles.
