Why do you think 9/11 is to blame? Not implying I disagree...

I kind of killed an age of innocence, at least for the kids. And this is where my own biases will appear, because I only just turned 30 last month.
80's consumerism and mall culture lasted throughout a very prosperous 90's.. It seemed like every day there was some crazy furthering of the human boundaries-- the internet, rocket launches, the upcoming millennium. I know there was bad stuff that still happened-- the crisis in Kosovo for example, but momentum of prosperity was still going strong once we survived Y2K. Then 9/11 happened, and as a kid who was going through changes of my own, I mean, the world seemed to spin a 180. Things weren't innocent anymore. The world is in fact, just as ****** of a place as it is beautiful.
Of course, people younger than me might point to the rise of social media (while un?ironically still using it). Or the economic collapse, which half the US populace still hasn't recovered from. But it seems like it's only devolved from there.
To stretch 9/11 onto the music scene is again, half a joke. But the footage of that tragedy was burned into every eyeball attached to a brain old enough to remember where they were, and that carries very real consequences to our psyche and how we perceive the world around us.
