Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

I guess there are two schools of thought to this.

#1. There is a hard cap of 13 scholarships, and Bailey is taking the place of an existing member of the team and not a 2020 freshman because everything in this scenario is viewed as a 1 to 1 relationship.

#2. There is a soft cap of 13 scholarships, and even if you believe that Bailey is taking the spot of an existing member of the team who won’t return for the 2020-21 season and we will oversign in the fall for the 2020 class, that oversigned spot could still have gone to an additional 2020 freshman. In that sense, it seems like Bailey took the spot of a 2020 freshman.

Scenario #2 seems to revolve around the idea that one believes the staff would only choose to oversign for a sit-out transfer, not an additional 2020 freshman.

Bingo

You have a list of their top targets? They were never going to take 10 guys in the fall, so I’m not really sure what you’re trying to argue.

The key to this discussion is seeing if we take Hall AND another PG. Springer would count as a PG in this context so that helps you and VQ in your opinions.

So I’ll agree this transfer didn’t effect the 2020 class if we sign these guys in November

Johnson
Springer or any PG
Hall
Walker

Correct. Taking Bailey came with the likely acceptance of oversigning by at least 1, or 1 more than they were previously likely willing to.

Taking Bailey isn’t costing them Springer or another top target.

They also have to land someone...missing on Hall/Love/Thompson doesn’t mean Bailey took their spot, it very well could mean we missed.

Which is funny to me because you’re on record as saying Barnes wouldn’t oversign, now with 1 added transfer you’re saying he will oversign by 2? Sounds to me like that would imply you thought he was always going to oversign this fall, yet you’ve said the opposite?

Well sure but it becomes cloudy when discussing if we missed, didn’t have a spot, or stopped working hard in The recruitment of the kid

See my post just above yours.

Absolutely...but if we are sitting at 3 commits and bringing guys in on OV’s still it would seem like we are trying to land a 4th regardless of if they actually do.

Not sure what that means? They weren’t recruiting bailey a year ago? They’ve known Bone was gone for awhile? Numbers are always changing.

And those 4 were the same when you said that, seems like you’re just trying to justify it now.

I think if there was a bit more talent/experience on the roster Barnes would have held the scholarship and went into this season with 12. Given the 13th to a senior walk-on and let him be on scholarship to finish his season. Then you'd get that scholarship right back once the walk-on graduated.

But I think Bailey having interest and being a potential multi year starter (not just a roster spot like the walk-on) but an actual potential starter after he sits out is why they felt it was worth taking him.

Yes the numbers are always changing and that’s the point. It appears we have added 3 guys late which has shrunk our spots available spots down from what had planned on being 4 with williams, Turner, Bowden and Bone departing as seniors.

Correct...bringing guys in during September/October/November on OV’s

I’ll side with you/VQ if we get Johnson and another commitment late summer and still bring in OVs that are planning to sign in November.

I think we will then slow play kids and wait for the spring

So what does that matter? That doesn’t mean you can just move 13 scholarship to 20, you have to adjust? ORN has been recruited since December, Plavsic was recruited before the season even ended, Bailey is the only newcomer...the staff knew who they were pursuing and the spot, not sure what you’re trying to say.

Late summer or fall doesn’t matter...if we have 3 commits and still bringing in OV’s prior to fall signing period it’s pretty clear.

Ive been clear with what I am saying

Taking Bailey means we aren’t signing 4 guys this November. Time will tell who’s right but you have already given your reasoning for talking out of both sides of your mouth
