Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Something else VQ mentioned on Bailey that is worth noting imo...

Barnes was recruiting him to Texas while he was still there and then when he got the job at Tennessee he also tried to get him here, so this isn’t a fly by the seat of your pants decision, it’s obviously someone Barnes knows well and has wanted to be a part of his program for awhile.

Agreed. One reason I was hoping for a Grimes get, we recruited him pretty heavily as well.

I trust Barnes & co. more than any other staff about who they bring in. Even if the guy doesn't pan out on the court he's helping the rest of the team get better in practice.

A lot of folks would be happy with adding Tevin Mack, yet his stats are pretty similar to that of Bailey, I guess simply because he’s a grad transfer? Way I am looking at it is that worst case scenario Bailey basically is a 2 year graduate transfer, he may not be All-American but he will provide experience and depth which will likely be lacking in the backcourt on the 2020-2021 team.

Huh?

Bailey isn’t a two year grad transfer. He takes a spot for a year without being able to play and is here for 3 years

It’s pretty simple a grad transfer doesn’t effect the 2020 class and that’s why fans would support that more over a kid that underachieved and washed up under a great coach

If this guy effected the 2020 class you’d have a point, but he doesn’t.

You made a dumb comment about kids redshirting not being good that got proven wrong, need examples of kids “washing up”, transferring and turning out to be pretty good?

LOL
His FT% is barely over 40%
His shooting stats are greatly distorted by how many of his shots were dunks. That you’d even try to laud him as a good shooter is laughable.

What's laughable is that your buddy said he couldn't "shoot a basketball to save his life" and the stats show that you're both full of crap.

Proven wrong ?

Lol

Change of scenery does a number of kids a lot of good.

Many many many more success stories with transfers than redshirt freshmen being difference makers after sitting out a year. That’s very rare. Proven fact

Man you have some bad takes.

I despise grad transfers unless you're landing a legit home run. Especially where we are as a program, I'd rather take Bailey who is on roster 3 seasons and likely hits the court running in his 2nd year here since he'll have an entire season to digest and get up to speed.

It's one reason I wish we could have got a RS for Kyle, one reason I am hopeful to see Kent perform this season is he's essentially gotten 2 seasons to get up to speed (and fully healthy). It's one reason I think Turner will improve a lot this year as well, he had a RS season.

Sure Bailey has to RS for a season, but he's not "wasting" a spot with that RS. He will be an extra talented body to practice with/against and he'll be improving his own game as he prepares for his chance to play. Grad transfers you get for a season and they can play immediately, but when you've already built a foundation I feel they are less useful in basketball. Rather grab a juco guy with 2 years or even a 1 & done over a grad, the grad has likely shown/hit his ceiling already and it's less likely you see him really explode in that extra year.

I can't think of a single grad transfer that came to UT and had a stellar season...seems like all of 'em were role players

Look I don’t like the grad transfer route. It rarely pays off. I was all for taking this kid until I realized he was a two year player at Oregon but I am not dead against it. I like the idea of him practicing and that Barnes has a history with him. I am just pointing out there are risk to taking him

Same risk exist with taking any transfer, even the 7 foot kid from ASU is a risk, he might be a BIGGER risk than Bailey. Even if we -only- get the same thing Bailey has done at Oregon that's still 20mpg and around 8 points a game. Which would be a solid 6th man off the bench, considering the 2020 class already has Walker in it...and hopefully James is here longer than a single season.

Which for what it's worth Barnes said James isn't coming to UT planning to be a 1 & done. So if he leaves after a season it'll be because he had a ridiculous year which should only HELP our recruiting for 2020 cause if James has a lottery pick type year we'll be flirting with SEC titles and high 20 wins.

I look at Bailey as a better prospect than waiting on a potential 2020 recruit, because he'll still be a 2 year player AND he'll have a full season under his belt a 3rd total at the college level. So conditioning won't be a question, no adjustment to college life necessary, and he'll know the staff/system.

2021 should be a far larger/better class for us recruiting wise. 2020 we are only scheduled to lose Turner/Bowden so just 2 spots and Walker has one locked up already. 2021 you'll lose Pons, Jalen, Kent, Fulkerson to graduation and potentially lose James and/or Bailey (he would be an eligible grad transfer or if he has a great season a NBA draft guy).

I like the foundation Barnes has created though moving forward....it's huge that he landed James and then ORN both are highly rated 2019 prospects. And to have Walker already sold for 2020 means we could really be bringing in an elite level class in 2021.

40) Victor Bailey Jr., 6-4, 180, G, Soph., Oregon
Stats: 7.4 ppg
Scout’s take: “I thought Dana Altman should have played him more. He has the size and can shoot it. I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes a key player wherever he lands.”
Schools: N/A

Pulled from a Jeff Goodman article. I think the Scout's take is encouraging. But if that's the case why is he only the ranked the 40th best sit out guy. Just feels kinda contradicting in a way.

I think the main reason Bailey is the right guy is we don't need him this upcoming season. Ya got James, Turner, Bowden, Jalen and even Pons that are all solid 1-3 guys. But the following year you won't have any of them except maybe James. So in his 2nd year here Bailey could emerge as a starter and he'd have the advantage of an entire season with the team/staff already. Something you won't get with a 1 year grad transfer or even a 2020 freshmen.

All that being said, IF we could find a solid 3/4 star guard in the 2019 class I'd rather take him than Bailey. Could still redshirt and would have possibly 4 years to play instead of 2. But I don't think any are out there.

2019 Projected starters (too soon?)

PG - James (Turner)
SG - Turner (Bowden)
SF - Pons (Bowden/Jalen)
PF - Burns (ORN/Fulkie)
C - Plavsic (Kent/Burns)

Not a bad squad...hopefully Plavsic can get eligible this season. Burns may also be a Center candidate depending on how athletic he is and if he can play the 4 or not.

Talk about a bad take

Johnson and Pons will be back, unless they transfer. Both would be SRs the following year (2020-21). Of those 5, we only lose Turner and Bowden, for certain.

Over Turner? or Pons? that SF/3 spot is where Admiral played. I could see Bowden being there but Jalen and Pons both are bigger/longer players. The 1-3 spots are pretty interesting lots of options for starters. I based my predictions off the fact this past season we missed Turner for a lot of games and Bowden lost the starting job to Pons. So I figure if Pons is where he should be then he's more likely to be the Admiral spot for the upcoming season.

Which would mean the 2021 class you'd be replacing them, correct? I could have my years mixed up...but I thought if they graduate after 2020-21 then the 2021 class would be where the spots would be open.

Admiral/Kyle played 2018-19...their spots are free for the 2019 class.

Now I'm confused.

Hell yea Bowden is starting.
He’s our best overall player returning.

You're welcome to make your own projections, it was kind of the point of making mine...so others would join in.

If I make 10 guess Bowden is in every one of them it’s just a question of whether he is going to play the 2 or 3.

Imo day one the lineup will be.

Turner-1
Bowden-2
Johnson-3
Pons-4
Fulky-5

I don’t expect it to stay that way I just expect Barnes to favor the returners early in the year and I think Pons will play more 4 than 3 this season

This was my point when I made the grad transfer comment, worst case you are getting a legit role player...someone who worst case is a 6-8th type guy on your bench and brings experience. If you’ve got a 20mpg 7ppg guy sitting on your bench you likely are in a pretty decent spot, if he’s better than that great, but worst case is he’s better depth than what we have had.

I also like the balancing in classes...

Seniors:
Jordan Bowden
Lamonte Turner

Juniors:
John Fulkerson
Jalen Johnson
Yves Pons

Sophomores:
Victor Bailey
Zach Kent

Freshman:
DJ Burns
Uros Plavsic
Josiah James
ORN
Davonte Gaines
Drew Pember

Ideally you redshirt at least one of ORN/Gaines/Pember and best case 2.
