I’m a little torn on Bryant. I obviously don’t think he’s some great passer by any means but with dooleys offense featuring a lot of 2nd level concepts it will be hard for a team to play man against them and not get torched by him on the ground (if he can prove to hit a decent amount of those passes)
Darrell Taylor (has the potential to be a first round draft pick) Crouch, Bituli, Henry, Ignont, Bennett, Johnson... I know I’m forgetting someone ... butt the first three names alone is above average. I think that postion group will be a strength this year. OL is getting better with mass, maturity and new bodies. We are (have been) way below average at lb. We really have to turn the corner there this year or it could be ugly with our very limited dl situation.
I have a hard time assessing RBs. Clearly not great at blocking. Running...I like to think we have some talent, but the OL really hasn't given them ample opportunities when we've led all of FBS in Stuff Rate 2 straight years. Feel bad for our RBs. If Trey returns and can play guard...opportunities will come.
Like I said...good writer. Whether what he SEES translates to what I believe is untested. Current status is its his opinion.

To say the whole team is average is just beyond stupid.
I think Roman Harrison may be a name you are forgetting. I think he’ll be a solid player.Darrell Taylor (has the potential to be a first round draft pick) Crouch, Bituli, Henry, Ignont, Bennett, Johnson... We all know about Cutcliffe...and it wasn’t anybody else but Kippy Brown as a “holdover”. Whittingham wasn’t even entertaining an interview with us after Kiffin. He’s still with the Utes fwiw...I’m sure bigger programs would have snapped him up if he was prone to leave. He would’ve came here, like cutcliffe, if we didn’t try to force kiffins staff holdovers on them.
Good point. Anyone know his background? Did he ever play ball or anything?
Sometimes it's hard to know how much a writer truly understands about the sport. Most have great understandings, but to your point, it doesn't make them some elite evaluator or analyst. That said, it might actually be worse if even a layman can tell you suck haha. I do know he has spent plenty of time covering other teams and so he has some point of context...seeing them practice, work, technique, etc. vs what he sees with us.
Oh, 1 nice takeaway from his piece was that he said we are now working much harder than before this staff. Not necessarily meaning we are outworking other teams (plenty of teams work 110%, right?), but just compared to this team under Butch, we are working way way harder. I think that's been mentioned before, but glad to see he sees the same thing. I think he may get as much access as anyone, if not more.
Love watching Utah. Wittingham would’ve done fantastic here after kiffin or Dooley.
Not sure if you're saying Bryant is good or bad here...I'll point out that Bryant is JG with more attempts.
Bryant's Junior season as the starter: 262-398 65.8% 2802 yards, 13 TDs and 8 INTs with 131.7 QBR
JG's Sophmore season as the starter: 153-246 62.2% 1907 yards, 12 TDs and 3 INTs with 141.0 QBR
Biggest advantage Bryant had/has over JG is he's willing to run the ball he accounted for 665 yards rushing that year as the starter on 192 attempts and added 11 TDs. I'm not sure he'll be durable enough to see that many attempts in the SEC though, but we shall see.
Bryant against the SEC as a Junior
@ Auburn: 19-29 65.5% 181 YDs 0 TDs 0 INTs 59 rushing yards and 2 TDs
@ South Carolina: 23-34 67.6% 272 YDs 2 TDs 1 INT 26 rushing yards 0 TDs
Alabama: 18-36 50% 124 0 TDs 2 INTs 19 rushing yards 0 TDs
I work with a big Clemson fan who is an alumni from there and he didn't seem to think Bryant was that good, I think he'll struggle on a less talent Missouri team playing a full SEC schedule.
In the end it’s his OPINION...that’s all I’ve posited. How educated an opinion remains to be seen. He covers this beat long enough and is dead on often enough and I’m more apt to do a leap of faith. It’s not “conforming” one way or the other or whatever the **** Chism was trying to say.Good point. Anyone know his background? Did he ever play ball or anything?

I was just saying he was not very good his full season of starting games. That said, he had a pretty good game against A&M and very well could be progressing. I just wouldn't base too much on what he did 2 years ago. JG's first season of starting games was quite poor too, but he has progressed as most QBs do.

Bryant is entering his 5th year and that was his junior season. I get what you're saying, but JG has only been in college 3 years and played 2. That extra experience is a double edge sword, it means Bryant is probably better than JG at the moment, but it also means we may have already seen his ceiling as well.
