We did lose next to nothing but of what? Average players in my opinion. Average players are returning and they may take a step forward, but still be one or two steps behind most of our competition.
That's all MIzzou and Vandy have are average players. But what they've also had is consistency with development, S&C program and better coaching than UT had with Butch. Year 2 of Pruitt should show much improvement in those areas. So even if our roster is full of average players, if our coaches are as good as many of us think they are, the results on the field will be much better.

The length of the rebuild is dependent upon what you consider the finished project to be. To me, it’s being in strong contention for the SECCG in late November. I say we could be there by 2021.
Yes.
I was a fan during the 90's. My timeline may be long but my idea of "rebuilt" is fairly hefty.

One thing I’ll say about Pruitt, good coaching, and “the rebuild.”

In another life, I was a Cowboys fan. Early 2000s we were a perpetual dumpster fire.

Jerry needs a new stadium built, so to garner support, he shelves his ego and hires a real coach - Parcells.

Philadelphia Eagles were our daddy for a while. Vastly superior team.

First time Eagles come to Texas stadium, they were heavy favorites. Rightfully so.

Eagles get ready for the opening kick off and Parcells alerted his team to be ready for a possible onside kick. Sure enough it comes, and a bottom of the roster WR named Randall Williams caught it on a bounce and returned it for a touchdown. Cowboys had no real business winning that game - but did.

McNabb vs Quincy Carter. Deuce Staley vs Troy Hambrick. Etc. top to bottom they were the better team.

Parcells had Dallas ready and we stole the game.

We already saw Pruitt do that for us last year. Had we not run out of gas (again, goes back to years of poor S&C), we might’ve been able to do it once or twice more.

Point is, coaching matters in football probably more than in any other professional sport. We’re in good hands with this coach and this staff.

UGA is reeling in insane talent every year but I still have doubts about what kind of coach Kirby is. I’ll take our guy over him.

That’s always going to be the question right, when are we rebuilt? My best answer is that when we play in the SECC game and have considerable talent projected to be on the roster the year after. Whether through returning underclassman or a top recruiting class, or preferably both. It’s not perfect, but to me, being rebuilt does not mean having one outlier of a good season. That’s the way UK does it, and we don’t need to do it like UK does it.

Ubben’s statement here should be a wake up call to the 8+ win crowd.
We are not average at LB... not average at CB.
Average at RB is above average in every other conference... I don’t think we are average at QB (this year) don’t @ me.

We also could see improvement at the S postion as well as the O-line this year...

I understand it’s the popular thing to do to doom and gloom UT but the truth is we will surprise a lot of people this year (im not just saying this as a hopeful fan... I have some football knowledge or atleast friends that do and people that know how this staff operates... no way we don’t get better this year.

I pretty much agree but that's the narrative put forth by many in the media. I can't stop them so my guesses have to include their influence, as well as negative recruiting.
Give me the 2nd year hype Jones received, I'll move up my timeline.

Right. The negative recruiting and pessimistic media narrative has influenced your opinion. It's influencing recruits, too. Rival programs love it. Validation for their negative recruiting is a gift.

There was a noticeable difference at GA in year 2 under Kirby. And it wasn’t the talent. It was the mentality. I want and expect to see that this year from our team.

I'm sure there were lots of reasons for the improvement, but the biggest one, IMO, was Fromm replacing Eason. Eason was extremely inconsistent in 2016, not mentally ready to be a starting college qb IMO. Fromm got up to speed much faster. Even if he was just a game manager, he was a good game manager and Eason never was. From my fan perspective, that changed the team from almost unwatchable to entertaining.

Our staff was unproven in virtually every facet of coaching from day one. I think the whole elite tag was unwarranted anyway.
I have no idea how you could honestly say they were unproven... Jeremy Pruitt as HC was unproven just as a HC but there was a reason people were coming for our staff...

Slight semantic, "they" didn't directly influence my opinion but them influencing the recruits opinions, did. The recruits hold the direct influence on me, not the media.

Hopefully recruits also realize there is a reason why we are being negitavely recruited so heavily.

Gut feeling is the UGA game. Other than 2017 it’s almost always a game. Even last year we gave a bit of a fight. We get a bye week before that game too. Hopefully Chaney has a hell of a game plan drawn up and we get a pick 6/special teams TD early.

Biggest problem I see with uga is they just keep widening the talent gap. They're closing in on Bama as far as recruiting goes.

Its a legitimate thought. Our HC, OC, and DC last year were in their first year of their careers in those roles.

Pruitt never been a HC. Never even coached at a program that wasnt ridiculously loaded with talent.

Helton was only a standalone OC once prior and Brohm called plays for WKU.

sherrer was DC for one year at south Alabama. And had only been a college coach for 5 years

Neids has basically never been a coach before.

Weinke was in his first stint as a college coach and first as RBs.

I really don’t know how you could say they were anything but unproven.

Our decline at the end of last year had more to do with our freshman hitting a wall, especially Thompson and Taylor, and some of the older guys throwing in the towel. If we play Missouri or Vandy earlier in the year, we have a pretty good chance of beating them.

If it was partially due to older guys throwing in the towel, I think you would have seen more fat trimmed from the roster in the offseason. Also, it doesn’t make sense to throw in the towel for the last couple of games after a couple of big wins in the weeks prior. I think that’s mostly fan fiction.

I thought it was the players complaining about other players only giving half the effort.
