Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Oversigning means taking more than Walker, Johnson and Springer to me. If we are really going over this over signing thing that means 4 total with walker on board

What?

Oversigning means signing more than you have room for, if we take a transfer we are are full at 13, only Bowden & Turner scheduled to leave means that we have room for 2 to sign in the fall. I am saying we will sign more than 2, probably 3 or even 4, that’s all I’m saying.

Lol

A few weeks back you were saying we were taking another PG, Johnson, walker and Springer and now it’s shrinking after the news of oversigning. Kind of funny really

Anyway I think we are taking 3 in November if we take this transfer. 4 if we don’t

How’s it shrinking? You just listed 4...if we take a transfer and Johnson, Walker , Springer that is still 4...not sure what you’re trying to say but it’s exactly what I’ve been saying.

You just made my point. The transfer takes a spot from the 20 class

Lol but it doesn’t, that’s the point...and you’ve admitted it by admitting we will oversign. It changes who they likely would pursue if anything, but it won’t limit how many they will sign, I’ve already said I could see signing 4 if it’s the right 4.

Anyway you look at it taking a transfer makes is much less likely we are going to be able to sign Hall and or a PG.

I think it’s playing percentages, and also balancing classes a bit...what are the chances of us landing: Love, Johnson, Springer, Walker and Hall? Probably not very good.

I’m not saying I’m not for it but make no mistake it’s taking A spot away from the 20 class in the early signing period

Lmao

Saying we aren’t likely to land all of our top targets and that we aren’t willing to take more than we have room for are 2 very different things.

Wow

Taking a transfer because we are hedging our bets is exactly my point that this guy is taking a spot away from our elite recruiting board

Not at all...if it makes you feel better then tell yourself we took a transfer to replace the bottom guy on our roster come April 2020.

As I asked another poster, what does our guard depth for 2020-2021 look like?

Like I said previously, if you’re saying we can only sign 12 instead of 13 then sure, but I doubt that was ever the case. If the plan had been to sign 3 in the fall all along, then they take a transfer and still opt to sign 3, how do that take a 2020 spot?

Balancing classes out is also important, I don’t think adding another freshman to this class would be a great idea long term.
I'm not saying we should take another freshman in the 2019 class, necessarily. Maybe a grad x-fer? But, if we carried over that scholarship, it would be available for a 2020 kid, would it not? If Bailey didn't transfer in, and we held that scholarship or used it on a grad x-fer, it would be open for a 2020 kid. In essence, Bailey comes into that 2020 class almost like a JUCO x-fer would. A kid with 2 years of eligibility. And I'm not convinced that the staff is just saying this early on that they only plan to sign 3 freshmen in the 2020 class. We are in on too many good kids to limit ourselves in May before signing day. If they are willing to oversign, I think the oversigned player could be an additional 2020 freshman just as easily as it could be a transfer in June of 2019.

If your previous thought after landing ORN and Plavsic (using 13th on grad transfer or leaving open) was that we had 3 spots then for 2019 fall class and those 3 spots would likely go to Springer, Johnson and Walker and that was it...

Then nothing changes if you are taking a sit out transfer with 13th spot and are still willing to take Springer, Johnson and Walker and thus oversign by 1. Nobody was talking about oversigning weeks ago, everyone was saying Barnes doesn’t do it, so the number was likely 3 for the fall class, if it’s still at 3 then nothing changed.

If they are willing to oversign by 1 why wouldn’t they by 2 then?

Think back 2 weeks ago, we all were saying the number was 3 for the fall class of 2020...we are all still saying the number is 3 for the fall class of 2020, so what changed? Maybe the staff didn’t/doesn’t want to sign 4 in November, or maybe they always wanted to sign 4 but not 5?

There are 13 scholarships available for basketball every year, taking a transfer won’t cost them a 2020 fall recruit anymore than it would have if they took a graduate transfer instead.

Oh that’s very easy to answer. It’s very unlikely Barnes (mr. I hate over signing) is going to go from one extreme to the other. He’s likely been persuaded( and rightfully so to oversign my one. That’s easy to assume

And maybe only with the addition of an unexpected transfer, also easy to assume.

After this year what does our depth at the 1/2 look like for the 2020-2021 season?
Josiah, JJ, Gaines, maybe Pons and I guess that's it. Yeah, definitely need another guard with some NCAA experience and Bailey has that. I'm expecting UT to sign at least 2 guards in '20, maybe even 3 if they sign 4 total.

Pons definitely isn’t a 1 or 2, also not sure Gaines is that...the 1st two yes.

That's why I said maybe about Pons. Gaines is probably more of a 3, but can probably play the 1/2 in a pinch. Am I forgetting somebody or is that it ? Guess Bailey would be needed, greatly

I’d like to see that rule.

How is it determined who’s leaving regarding redshirts and such ?
There is no rule. Pitino and Crean at Indy were criticized for it (forcing players out) a few years ago but nothing was ever done. Multi season scholarships were even suggested but never adopted. Cal did it when he took the job at ky. Forced a couple of players to look elsewhere.
