Determining SEC's rising, falling football teams

Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones is in hot water with several SEC fanbases this week after boldly labeling seven teams he expects to rise and seven others he expects to fall over the next three years in the SEC.

Stepping in for Paul Finebaum this week at SEC Network HQ in Charlotte, Jones provided ideal offseason fodder for college football's most competitive league in attempt to project where every program might be during the 2019 season and beyond.

The only stipulation for Jones' list? His picks are based on records the past three seasons vs. the next three seasons and which teams will perform better as a result. Included in his group of risers were Auburn, Arkansas, Florida, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Georgia.

Texas A&M's 10-year investment into Jimbo Fisher and Dan Mullen's immediate success with the Gators make those obvious picks, while Auburn and Kentucky warranted the most questions from listeners to this week's show.

"In Georgia's case, it's because I think they're a national title contender," Jones said during Wednesday's show. "In Florida, Texas A&M and Auburn's case, it's because I think they're going to take a step up. In Arkansas and Ole Miss's case, I think it's because you can't be much worse."

Jones was beaten up on social media and given the homer label for slotting Kentucky as a riser following the Wildcats' historic 10-win season last fall. Kentucky replaces all-time leading rusher Benny Snell, SEC Defensive Player of the Year Josh Allen and much of its star-studded secondary off one of its best teams ever.

"I don't think Kentucky will be as good in the next three yeas as they were last year, but if you combine the three as a whole, that was (my) argument," Jones said.

As for the fallers? Alabama, LSU, South Carolina, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Tennessee are expected to suffer drop-off, according to Jones.

Alabama is seeking its fifth consecutive trip to the national championship game this season while South Carolina is facing the nation's toughest schedule and hasn't beaten Jones' beloved Wildcats in five years. Many are expecting the Vols to take the next step this fall under second-year coach Jeremy Pruitt, but not Jones.

"Alabama and LSU, in part, because they’ve done well enough that a step back does not necessarily mean anything bad, especially Alabama," Jones said. "In the case of Missouri and Vandy, it's because they’ve played a little above their historical thought and I think they take a step back. In Mississippi State and Tennessee, it's because I think they're two programs on the decline.

"And then South Carolina, it’s because of Will Muschamp. Those are he reasons and they feel to me totally rational."

What a tool.

It would be great
That’s what kids need when they act like little assholes
Kids are very weak minded nowadays, that can’t handle any adversity let alone even take a joke
I wasn't being an ahole. I was a 5 year old learning how to write. But I get your point. And I hope you don't have children.

Matt Jones has no objectivity or credibility at all. He thinks UT is going to decline from a 5-7 season, despite better conditioning, a year of player development and a more talented roster? He just creates controversy to get attention, and his #1 target is usually UT fans. What a wipe.
His goal is to be Clay Travis. Unfortunately for him, unlike Clay, he’s boring.

Jones own rational argument is flawed...

Kentucky who has averaged 8 wins a season the past 3 years is on the rise? But he doesn't expect them to win as many as last year (10)...then how are they on the rise exactly? He then states Arkansas (4 wins a season average) & Ole Miss (5 wins a season average) cause they can't get much worse but Tennessee who has averaged 6 wins a season over the last 3 is on the decline?

Would put more faith in Tennessee to win an average of 8 a season over the next 3 more than I would Arkansas or Ole Miss (WHO BOTH PLAY IN THE WEST). LSU, A&M, Bama, Auburn, & Miss State are going to make it a pretty hard grind for Ole Miss & Arkansas to elevate much. Ole Miss does benefit from having Vandy as their yearly East opponent and Arkansas has a slightly tougher test in Missouri.

I don't know, can't say I'm surprised by sports anchor dumbness...with Stephen A. & Skip existing. It's like with any media outlet these days clicks > content.

It's a right of passage.!
Each generation gets to call the next soft. Several of you 20 somethings are doing it now.
Me and mine talked about you guys even more than you think.
And my dad scoffed at us.

Meanwhile, hardcore MMA is replacing boxing and our military is filled with some of the best trained soldiers ever produced.
Because we're all fos but it's still our undeniable right.

I took a job that was a small pay cut with worse benefits because during my interview the business manager had both her Australian Shepherds roaming around.

One's name was Finn, he was a bit of a chunk when I worked in the office he would stay under my desk at my feet the entire day. It was one of my favorite places to work ever.
I think I might have recieved a few paychecks from the same place.......

Can't blame the Alabama pick because down is the only way they can go. MSU and Tennessee picks make no sense. But he is a huge Kentucky homer so of course he would pick them

Yeah, it's just inconsistent.

Auburn-- a school so unnaturally unpredictable is going to be on the rise, despite uncertainty about a coach with a god-level buyout and cinder block training facilities right out of Remember the Titans.. Totally on the rise.

Kentucky's historic success will obviously continue, they won't stop until Walgreen's sponsors its practice field. Tennessee's historic demise won't bottom out at 4 5 wins, we'll continue to crash until our rubble burns. But Arkansas sure as heck can do it in the toughest division in all of football (also in one of the most talent-void states to recruit from).

GTFO

I didn't go to catholic school even if I admire the girl's uniform but the paddle was in full effect until junior high and I found my arse on the business end of it many a day. Then I would have to take a note home to get it signed that I got paddled. My dad would see it and here came whoopin' number two. Good times.
