So fire him. Who’s his replacement?Dude, Barnes played this up himself. He leveraged his own by threat of leaving in the dark of night. Why? No Grant, no Bone, no Schofield. No doubt it played a role in Lanier leaving. And guess what, regardless of the coach, next season is gonna be very tough and Barnes knows it. He got his payday after last season. And parlayed his UCLA interest into taking advantage of Fulmer. There’s no integrity in Barnes, he just wants that money.
But keep apologizing for him. He’ll run as fast as he can without regards to anything Tennessee as soon as more money presents the opportunity.
Is Barnes a top 5 coach, deserving of top 5 coach money? No, he's not. But is the difference between Coach McGoogle and a guy that will take you to the tournament regularly with an occasional run (and an SEC championship...) worth a few million? Sure.
I'd easily rather pay Barnes $5 million than pay McMahon from Murray State $2 million. And for those saying we could go out and get a coach at dollar value for our 5 mil, you're wrong. Just ask Jay Wright who turned down a doubled salary to coach at UCLA (still a much better job than Tennessee.)
The money is only worth who it can land, and Barnes is a darn good coach for this program. It's not my money, so if the admin is willing to shell it out to keep my 31-6 coach around I'm game.
You continually choose the strangest posts of mine to make an entirely unrelated point. I bet you could find a way to skull-drag Rick Barnes if I posted a recipe for snickerdoodles.Dude, Barnes played this up himself. He leveraged his own by threat of leaving in the dark of night. Why? Pay 1/3 and don’t make the tourney kicks azz! This is a terrible attitude for those of us who'd actually like to see UT reach a FF before we die. "Oh well, pay top dollar for the round of 32/sweet 16 every now and then and we aren't a good program so we can never be a good program."
Fact is, many worse programs than UT can and have made the Final 4.

LA Times reporter who wrote the article said his sources confirmed a fake tweet by a parody account after saying Dixon and Barnes were done deals.
I'm not attacking him per se, but let's just say his sources, aka Guerrero, are constantly wrong.
4 of our last 5 coaches who stayed more than a year have made the sweet 16 over a 20+ year span. People act like UT is still the UT of Wade Houston. Buzz Peterson was the only truly unsuccessful coach here in the last 20+ years. Hell, even Tyndall landed Admiral in his short stay and if not for his idiocy at Southern Miss I've no doubt he would have made the NCAAs as well. We've been to the tournament 14 times in the last 21 years and 8 times in the last 11 years but still act like the fanbase of a team that went 1 time between 1984 and 1997 and act as if no coaches win here, when in fact, many have.
Tyndall’s “idiocy” didn’t keep us out of the postseason his lone season...his RECORD did. Zo made the NIT our regular destination and truly took the money and ran the ONE time we made the big dance. In my lifetime, only Jerry Green and Bruce Pearl were regular qualifiers and guys like you fire a 31 game winner because you get butthurt with that background. You most likely bisched about every coach we’ve ever had because you’re a determined miserable with no solution...except more bisching.
Those two ideas are not mutually exclusive, though. Barnes can wish he had gotten the UCLA job and still be happy where he is. People experience that crossroads everyday. For all we know, UCLA could be the one singular job he would have left Tennessee to take. It could also mean he’d take the Fairleigh-Dickinson job if they paid him $6 million. We don’t know. All people are left with are their imaginations and hurt feelings left to determine in their minds what could happen down the road.I think you're missing the part of the article where Rick Barnes wanted to leave and doesn't want to be here
