Here's the thing...according to 247

OLine: Average Star Rating 3.7
Trey - 5*, Morris - 5*, Wright - 5*
Kennedy - 4*, Carvin - 4*, Lampley - 4*, R. Johnson - 4*
McBride - 3*, Akporoghene - 3*, J. Johnson - 3*, Lane - 3*, Locklear - 3*, Calbert - 3*, Tatum - 3*, Niehaus - 3*

USC's Average Star Rating is 3.3, one reason I hate this BS narrative that we don't have the talent. Other than Alabama and Georgia there aren't many teams with more stars sitting on their roster DESPITE how badly we've performed on the field. I guarantee that if we had hired a Jimbo Fisher type last season wouldn't have been a 5-7 season. Nothing against Pruitt, I love the guy but he's still a first year coach who was learning on the job.

My point is that it all comes down to coaching, this season and beyond. Enough high level recruiting has happened to be competitive in the SEC. Since 2015 we're averaging a class ranking of 13.6 only 2 other SEC East teams have averaged better (Georgia 3.6 & Florida 13.4). Yet in those 4 seasons our record against the east is 10-14, And 5 of our 10 wins came in 2015, arguably Butch's best season a total of 17 points in our 4 losses that year all by 1 possession.

So we've recruited on the same level as Florida on average it's not the players...it just isn't, if Kentucky can go 7-6, 7-6, and 10-3 while averaging 34.6 in recruiting ranking, no excuse for us to not win a minimum of 7 games.

Year 1 to Year 2 in SEC play
Stoops 2-10 to 5-7
Mason 3-9 to 4-8
Odom 4-8 to 7-6
Muschamp 6-7 to 9-4
Mullen 5-7 to 9-4 (at MSU)
Bielema 3-9 to 7-6 (at Arkansas)

It's not unrealistic at all to believe Pruitt can go from 5-7 to 7-5 or better, with the talent on the roster based on the ratings he has a leg up on year 2 compared to these other coaches. Since none of them had anywhere near the same level of existing talent on roster as UT does.

Same oh same oh every single year. They come out of the woodwork with the same ole post in April/May 2019 freaking out about CP not having enough recruits to their liking. Did we learn anything from our last recruiting class by the staff? Of course not.
Yeah...I learned my lesson from last year. That going the way it did is why I am not concerned. I was very concerned last year, and thought we were gonna whiff on everybody.

I haven't read the article but me and Neids grew up in the same town in AK. Eagle River isn't exactly isolated.
He moved there in high school to play football. Grew up in a town where some kids had to take a plane to go to school every day that was only accessible by boat or plane. I forgot the name of it though.

I got home from work today and checked the mail only to find two tickets to the 2020 Winter Classic for Preds vs Dallas, in Dallas at The Cotton Bowl, in an envelope in my mailbox. No address. No writing on the envelope. No receipt. Literally just two Ticketmaster ticket stubs in a Ticketmaster envelope. At first I thought it was a surprise from the wife but after looking at the stubs it had someone else’s name on the tickets. I went from 0 to 100 to 0 in 2 seconds flat. Now I don’t know what to do. From that moment on though my mind has been should I find these people? or buy a plane ticket to Dallas?

I know, I'm no help at all.

@chargervol gets it, it's not the talent that's the issue. It's the mismanagement of it from previous incompetent staff.

@jakez4ut brings up a solid point, we have without a doubt faced far more attrition than most other SEC programs in the same time frame, I also attribute that again to previous staff's inability to properly develop the talent.

How many injuries did we see this off season compared to during Butch's tenure? That comes down to how good your S&C program/staff is and Pruitt if nothing else has shown he can staff up the program. Ultimately he's going to be successful he'll win as many games as Butch by the time he's in years 3 & 4. Those extra 3-4 wins that come from out coaching the other guy will then come into play and that will be what separates Pruitt from being a good coach to an elite one, I'm hoping he turns into an elite coach though...but time will tell on that.

Make no mistake due to poor development and attrition we're not there "yet" in talent, but anyone who is preaching a lack of talent like these guys can't play is just flat out wrong. The guys on roster should be competitive with Vandy and Missouri with adequate coaching...now

Seems crazy to me that guys like David Sills and Holyfield went undrafted despite on field production last yr. no off field or injury issues. At some point gm have to stop worrying about 40 times and look at them on the field. Most of these nfl gms are clowns these days. No wonder so many undrafted free agents become good players these days

I think, like always, the truth is in the middle. There is not as much talent as recruiting rankings suggest but more than many on here is giving credit for. We can all agree the it was very underdeveloped until last year. Maybe another year of development will make the recruiting rankings look more accurate. I do think it's funny that many of the same people who are star gazers, discount all of our highly rated guys but complain that our rivals are getting so many. Just an interesting observation.

They should add a couple more roster spots to the game day 53 and add a round or 2 to the draft.

I think it's fair to look for progress and improvement, but to expect a coach to work a miracle in year 2/3 isn't very realistic or fair for that matter. This isn't basketball where you can turn things around with 1 or 2 elite prospects. Football needs mature depth and that just takes time.
Yeah, don't think this goes against anything I've said. I don't expect a miracle with poor line play in a conference of trenches.
I do expect to see improvement. There is no reason not to expect stronger and better developed players to play as such at other positions.
There's a difference between expecting miracles and watching for signs of improvement.. or lack of.

Gotcha, like I said hadn't read it but knew that our high school was 30 minutes from the Anchorage metropolis.

The way i look at it is: we had enough talent to beat auburn and UK...so we should’ve had enough to beat (or at least not get blown out) mizzou And vandy.

We have a mediocre roster so with good coaching it can win/be in games and with bad coaching it can look like it did against Florida, vandy, Missouri etc.

Yeah it was a really interesting article mostly interviewing people from up there and talking about moving to the "big city" next to Anchorage.

and that's fair. i just don't buy the "we have talent, and that alone means we should beat xyz" narrative. the talent, in and of itself, is still an issue.

probably true. again, just speaking on the "talent" narrative, bout what it is vs. what some think it is.

it all plays a role in how good, or bad, a particular team is. as for the stars....yeah.

What Butch clearly proved is he doesn't know how to build a roster or staff to be successful. Twice he followed Kelly and took over 10+ win teams that had pieces in place and he was able to win, and left after year 3 each stop. UT was his first 4th & 5th year Head Coach stop the years where it's basically ALL your guys/culture and you either sink or swim, he obviously sank.
