I’m worried about our OL but I feel ok about our DL if Solomon gets approved and they stay healthy.

The OL is really the main reason I'm not high on 7-5/8-4 (hell, even 9-3)

My prediction for our best and/or most serviceable OL players this year:
Ryan Johnson: RG/C
Wanya: LT

then a gulch hopefully occupied by Darnell at RT

K'rojhn Calbert: G

Jahmir Johnson: LG
Brandon Kennedy: C

...

Like, we only have 3 or maybe 4 legitimate pieces depending on what you think about BK. I think we'll see improvement throughout the next few years, especially if we hold onto the bulk of the staff. But I think next year will be only a little better than last year. We'll cut down on catastrophe plays, but we still won't be able to bank on 3yards when we need it.

We don’t have to be great or even good on the OL. We just can’t be terrible. Just be ok and we’ll be fine

100% agree. 7-5 is a successful year. Thats GA State, UAB, BYU, Chattanooga, Vandy, UK, and one of Miss St/Missouri/Scar.
I think context will be important too. How we compete and the strength of opponents will determine whether 7-5 is big improvement or not.

If the East turns out to look like total garbage and we lose ugly in some of those, that won’t look great.

If the East is solid and we keep our losses close, that will look better.

If Chaney can get improvement enough to put us in normal sack percentages and RB's at least getting a foot beyond the los before contact (again, just normal).
Then getting 1st downs and moving down the field will be significant over last year. And our defense actually getting that time to rest, game changer.
Small feat that could pay huge returns.

Maybe.

Man, imagine if Smith somehow comes back. Suddenly our OL outlook would be for us have a decent chance at being solid. Right now we’re all just praying that they don’t suck again.

as frustrating as it is, we have 5 really good prospects in 19 class. what's frustrating is our QB hasnt shown much progress. i really hope Chaney can work wonders.

I don't mean to sound like such a downer, I'm just trying to keep expectations in line.

I mean, last fall, we were getting giddy about VFL's tweeting that we could win 8. Then the 1st play of WVU brought us back to earth.

Even without Trey, I do think we improve. I just think it'll only be enough to get us to 6 or 7 wins, nothing beyond that. :/

Nothing wrong with limiting expectations given what we've been through.
Understandable, maybe even smart. Plus it's how you feel, you're not doing anything just to instigate. And I think instigation has played a major factor in the hot mess the board has been lately.

I instigate in yer general direction.

One thing that is going to be interesting is playing Oklahoma next year with them breaking in a new QB against what should be a good DB group for us. Wish it was a home game.

Really need that signature OOC, nationally relevant win. No more botched opportunities.

And I wouldn't be mad if Riley moved to the NFL after this year...

Still hurts. They've won 11 or 12 every year for like 4 years. And we were so freaking close to adding our name to the short list that handed them a loss.
Instead, just another "should've"

Yeah I'd take that for sure. As long as one of the losses isn't vandy

I could most stomach something zany like 5 losses of: BYU, Miss St, Bama, UGA, Mizzou. Whip Mullen, finally get Muschamp, and dominate Vandy. I know unlikely, but that odd mix I could live with. But I can't stand losing anymore to UF, USC, Vandy. UGA can get 1 more in on us before Pruitt makes bowlcut his inmate.

Good god I remember when we were killing it in the first half. We had finally arrived. Then implosion city. Then UF. Then Arkansas. The fanbase imploded...so many were done with the 2015 squad...D-O-N-E. Then we came within mere plays of beating the devil right inside of hell. Closed out real skrong and finished with the best year since the early 2000's by many metrics. That was actually a great team. Better than even many ever understood and the W/L record reflected. Lawson and Jancek were soo underrated.

And the end of that story also reminds me of Men's bball last year (2017-2018). We lost our first 2 SEC games and I remember so many posters saying they were DONE with the team and hated Barnes. Then we went on to have possibly the winningest 14 month stretch of UT MBB of all-time.

This was all a complete tangent from your point, but that is where my stream of consciousness led me. Moral of the story - let every Vol team play it out before we count them out. We will take our lumps and get our bruises in the next year, 2 years, 3 years. Stick by our boys and I think they will surprise us.
