I’m grateful to Barnes for the success the last two seasons ... let’s face it: there hasn’t been much to get excited about lately in UT sports (and in men’s basketball, not much in our history, period). But the guy must be pretty dense if he thought there wouldn’t be a fairly big negative reaction. Maybe he doesn’t care. Who knows?

Absolutely nothing beneficial from today’s comments and nationally he’s been criticized for it. Made everyone look bad. Honestly, he should be embarrassed.

If someone asked you a question on why you had done something, and they already knew the answer, yet you gave them a different answer.........wouldn’t that be embarrassing?

I’ve seen many national people applaud his honesty and comments, hasn’t been all negative or criticized.

After his statements, he will not be accepted in Knoxville by large groups of fans. He said that to the wrong group of people for what he's making

Vindictiveness is not a core value for everyone.

He went to the place that wanted him the most.

Biblically he used "Don't throw your pearls before pigs, or else they will trample you."

He measured appreciation and went to the administration that was less like swine.

Most I've read have been neutral and just reported the facts.

Kinda funny, but sad. In the world of dirty college sports where just about every coach is suspect(in people's minds), we have a guy that is too honest for his own good and complain about it.

Many? Hmm I’ve seen the local media defend him (shocker) but I haven’t seen much. The CBS article that Calban posted but I know both Finebaum criticized it and PTI ripped him, and I’ve seen a lot of “well I appreciate the honesty but some things better left unsaid.”

Either way, could you explain to me how yesterday’s comments are shining a positive light on the program? Because it did nothing good.

It will all be forgotten in about 2 weeks or after the next top 75 player commits. The only ones who bring up from then on will be those with the Anti-Barnes agenda which don't seem to be in short supply these days. I'll take the Honest Abe character over many of the sleazes in the sport any day.

I’ll take the guy who promotes the program in a positive light instead of saying “Yeah I’d rather be at UCLA but they were too cheap.”

And no, it won’t be forgotten. Because if Tennessee loses Bone/Williams and doesn’t make the tourney next year, a lot of fans are gonna remember he’d rather be at UCLA than Tennessee

If he wins at a high level, then people will forget all about it. BUT, if he continues to fail to live up to seed expectations in the NCAA tournament and continues to essentially blame everyone but himself when things go wrong, then I think people will get fed up in a hurry. If he was leaving if UCLA would have paid his buyout, then the huge raise we offered him - which he accepted - didn't even play into it. We got fleeced, and Rick Barnes should now be measured based upon what he is making, which is top 3 money in the country. Public relations is part of the job, and Rick did a crappy job of it yesterday.

Human nature says it won't be remembered very long. Lol, we've still got people that think that Pearl wants to come back to TN and would do a better job than Barnes. that's just not being willing to acknowledge the damage he did that far out weighed the good. Barnes' history is one of consistent trips to the dance. I'll be very surprised if we sit next season. And looks like you'll be apologizing again mid season as you were this year.

I haven’t brought up Pearl in any of this discussion. This is about Barnes and his comments yesterday which were completely unnecessary. And while he made he having better regular season success than I anticipated, he once again proved what he is in the tournament: an underachiever.

I agree that it isn’t the best look in the world, but what is a great look is having the best 2 year run in school history. Pearl did some things that people would’ve preferred he probably didn’t do, but when you win at that level you can get away with doing/saying some things that a coach who is winning less wouldn’t get away with. Barnes doesn’t mince words, I’m sure the SID was gritting his teeth but it is what it is, I think most people are smart enough to realize that CBB is a business first and foremost, and that CRB doesn’t owe anything to Tennessee and given how he was treated at Texas it’s easy to see why he may be willing to at least listen to others. CCM wanted out of Tennessee, he took a pay cut to do so, Barnes if he wanted out of Tennessee had plenty of good chances to do so, he didn’t feel things went perfectly smooth and took that as a sign that it wasn’t meant to be.

Do we think this is the first time a coach has stayed with his current team because another team courting him was unable to pay his buyout? No. This is the first time I've heard a coach come out and essentially say "I'm only here because they couldn't pay my buyout." Why is that? At least part of it is because it's a dumb thing to say.

Yes, and if he had been even more honest by saying the women in his office are all over weight but he decided to come back anyway he could expect everything to go back to normal the next day! I guess they would commend him?

What was made up? He said if they would have paid the buyout, he would have left. UCLA didn't want to pay the buyout. They were too cheap to pay the buyout. So, yeah, it's not a direct quote, but that is what he said, just in different words.

Or he wanted it to be clear he preferred UCLA to Tennessee. So either Rick is an idiot or he knew what he was doing and trying to send a message.
