He literally said if they'd have paid the buyout I'd be out. There's no other way to view that than that he would rather be at UCLA. You can tell yourself differently all you want. How do you guarantee that...exactly? And Barnes didn’t say he “doesn’t want to be here”. Because if it were true...he wouldn’t be.
You want your wife to be honest with you, but as soon as she tells you she had a fling with the neighbor but decided ultimately to stay with you, you got upset.
The audacity!
It's a business, we all ALREADY know that but that isn't my issue.
My issue is it didn't have to be, at least not like that.
I'm about winning and have no interest in running off Barnes.
But why? lol. You had a week to plan and every opportunity to embrace the fans and you chose that?
Hell, Kiffin ditched us and didn't even have to give a response. He still managed the whole "the only school", " my dream school" lines.
We joke about reaching the age where you just don't give a crap about what you say, maybe Barnes is there![]()

All that is fine.I didn't bother with most of the press conference, I know why Barnes listened when UCLA called. He had about 5 million reasons to listen.
I appreciate the fact he gave UT the chance to get their ducks in a row and pitch a real counter offer to keep him here until he retired. UCLA still had more money on the table, but them not willing to pay the buyout wasn't worth uprooting again so the decision was made.
I don't really take it as "I love UCLA more, so I'm just here because of the buyout" I take it more of a "two amazing job offers, and I stuck with the one I was familiar with"

All that is fine.
But how do you think it would go if you went to your boss right now and told them you had another job lined up but at the end of the day they didn’t pay as much as you wanted?
It may work out fine - especially if you’re a good employee your boss wanted to keep.
But you better believe they’re making a mental note of it. And if your performance starts to lag - it would very likely be used against you.
I'm glad Rick Barnes is staying, and I don't care if it was only because UCLA wouldn't pay the buyout. It's a business, and UCLA is still a dream job in the eyes of many Boomer coaches that grew up in awe of Wooden. I'm just glad we aren't troting out Steve Forbes or Casey Alexander and staring a 3 year rebuild in the face. We get to keep our 5 star playing coming in, and it has to help us with our current players who have one foot in the NBA draft.
The only thing that bothers me is that he keeps referring to God wanting him to be here, when we know for a fact it's about money. Is he saying that he knew God wanted him to stay at Tennessee because UCLA lowballed him on the buyout? I guess they do say God works in mysterious ways...
Funny you mention that, it's exactly how my line of work goes.
I put in a notice once in October...the new company -wanted me- before Thanksgiving, current employer didn't want me gone. Went back & forth a few times with the current boss couldn't give me what I wanted to stay. New job ended up waiting until after the holidays to finally give me a start date...day after MLK Jr. Day.
Was on a "could be this week" notice for 3 months. No one takes it personal if you're civil and honest with everyone involved.
