Coach Barnes just reiterated what most of us had read about the buyout. I appreciate his honestly. If he would've went up there, in what was a pretty much useless press conference by the way, and said the reason he wasn't leaving was because of how much he loved TN then most would question why he even flirted the idea anyways. Another top 10 team next year and a tournament run and this will be forgotten. Somehow get to a Final Four and those who are blasting him on this board will be rejoicing that he stayed. None of us can honestly say that we would've turned down an offer for the substantial raise he was going to get. What really gets me is some who are criticizing Barnes for considering the UCLA job are the same ones who would probably welcome Lane Kiffin back with open arms. We as Vol fans are fortunate enough to have a really good basketball coach. Let's enjoy him while we have him. I for one have immensely.

It is going to sell extremely well, regardless.
Jacked up when it’s THE sole source of GOT fix. I love to read and I’ve refused to start the series until the show ends...so I won’t stand in line. All of the book fans will make the Star Wars reboot pale imo.

Actually it was a pay cut when you consider taxes. That makes it even worse

I think CRB did a poor job in communicating his thought process today. Piecing together everything here is what I think he was trying to communicate:

UCLA offers him the job. He then prays and asked God, “is this your will?”
He believes it is what God wanted, but is unsure. He then said, “God, if you want me to go to UCLA, then give me a sign. Let them offer to pay the buyout.”

UCLA does not offer to pay buyout, thus CRB sees it as a sign to stay at Tennessee.

Basicly, IMO he threw out a fleece to determine whether he should stay or go.

“Hey five star player, I don’t really want to be at TN, I’d rather be at UCLA, but dang it, they didn’t pay my buyout. You should totally want to come to TN tho rather than a school like UCLA or another blue blood. Why? Idk really cause I don’t want to be here either haha! But hey, I am here, so you should come play for me. Unless, you know, another blue blood program comes next year and will pay my buyout. In that case I’m out. But, that may or may not happen 🤷‍♂️. But you should totally come to TN” -Rick Barnes

What's ironic is that most recruits aren't fans of your university either. They are looking for the best situation, both academically and for their basketball careers. They will be doing the exact same things Barnes did- assess their offers and make a decision.

This doesn’t help you at all. If we value wins we can do a lot better also. Barnes has his best team ever at TN and didn’t hang a single banner. He seems to be a sweet 16 coach. And he doesn’t want to be here. You know who would love to be here? A guy who coached circles around Barnes the last two years and made the final four this year. I’d rather have him
So in other words you're just mad that Barnes didn't leave and we didn't get to go out and possibly hire Pearl. It has nothing to do with what Barnes said about his buyout.

My new pet theory is that he's already finished the series, but he won't publish them until after his death so he doesn't have to listen to the bi-, uh, complaining.

He's got plenty of money.
I could see that. I think he loves the attention tho. The fans have ramped up the seriousness ala Star Wars and The Walking Dead, and are impossible to satisfy.

It's worse than that. She said she only stayed cause the neighbor wouldn't shell out for dessert.

Edit: Also, she called a press conference to make sure everyone knew.
Also, you bought her the third blingiest piece of jewelry you could find to prevent her from seeing how things are with the other neighbors.

Maybe so but I can't fault a guy for at least entertaining what most basketball historians would consider a dream job. We as Tennessee fans need to remember how terrible in basketball we have been at times in the past 30 years. Sure Green and Pearl had some really good teams but it's been the basketball doldrums the majority of the time. A good coach is leading the charge in Knoxville and I for one am thankful. I had more fun attending games this year than I've had in awhile. As a fan I never take these coaching situations personal and get my panties in a wad like some. I root for the University of Tennessee first and foremost. Whoever is coaching them is secondary but also gets my rooting interest. This is a business. I've been at my job for 11 years and it's been very good to me but if a better situation comes up at some point I would seriously consider taking that chance. What Coach Barnes pondered is no different. Most fans just don't wanna hear the truth. Especially those with orange colored glasses. Of which I also proudly wear.

Heat for the sake of pain tolerance is a young mans game. I’ve played it, and no interest in it.

Personally I love the flavor of habanero and if treated well, it becomes edible in a sauce. 10 minutes ago the habanero Tabasco topped my taters and chicken.

My favorite offerings with a habanero sauce is Marie Sharp's, the white label & gold label.

Ace's post is it IMO.

Bass - not calling you out, but I listened to the whole thing as well. CRB is human. If we took everything you said on here literally and to fit a narrative like you just did with CRB, you would not come across any better. None of us would.

Look what happened when Kiffin took his dream job at USC instead of staying in Knoxville. How did that work out? Hamilton and the boys were willing to ante up to keep him, but he had already made up his mind to leave and was not changing his mind. Now, years later, Kiffin wishes he had stayed. He realizes it was a mistake. People learn from mistakes and if they are wise they change how they handle things in the future.

Like Kiffin, CRB had an opportunity to take his dream job. Face facts - UT was his rebound girlfriend he married after getting divorced by Texas after 15 years of what he thought was a happy marriage. He is not an orange blooded Vol. He said as much in the presser today. Instead of saying yes to the dream job immediately and accepting that he would have to pay at least part of the buy-out, he talked with Phil because he had not fully decided. Maybe it was the fleece. They worked on the issue as grown men. After sincere reflection he knew he should stay and finish out his career. He's experienced enough to know that strings are attached relating to future expectations. He knows what happens if he cannot meet them because as he said in the interview he knows what it feels like to be fired just like Phil. So yes, he would leave doors open if he desires to keep coaching because he and none of us know if he will meet expectations going forward.

I hope he does because it will mean our Vols are elite, which they have never been for a sustained period in history. That includes Pearl. Meanwhile Phil never has to worry about the FBI or NCAA knocking on his door about the basketball program - unlike the school that employs Pearl. And I think Pearl is a really good basketball coach.

You can agree with everything in this post and still wonder why they felt it necessary to hold a press conference for Barnes to say: "yeah, I'd be outta here if the money had been right."

It's a senseless own goal. I appreciate those trying to stay positive about it, and it's not a catastrophe or anything. But Tennessee has to quit doing this kind if thing to itself.

I didn't bother with most of the press conference, I know why Barnes listened when UCLA called. He had about 5 million reasons to listen.

I appreciate the fact he gave UT the chance to get their ducks in a row and pitch a real counter offer to keep him here until he retired. UCLA still had more money on the table, but them not willing to pay the buyout wasn't worth uprooting again so the decision was made.

I don't really take it as "I love UCLA more, so I'm just here because of the buyout" I take it more of a "two amazing job offers, and I stuck with the one I was familiar with"

It's a business, we all ALREADY know that but that isn't my issue.
My issue is it didn't have to be, at least not like that.

I'm about winning and have no interest in running off Barnes.
But why? lol. You had a week to plan and every opportunity to embrace the fans and you chose that?

Hell, Kiffin ditched us and didn't even have to give a response. He still managed the whole "the only school", " my dream school" lines.

We joke about reaching the age where you just don't give a crap about what you say, maybe Barnes is there😅
