Like Tuesday, Tennessee’s defense ran a circuit drill where all three units rotated to different takeaway drills. Tracy Rocker led the “chop and run” drill, where the guys either blitzed (LBs and DBs) or straight rushed (DL) and tried to strip-sack the quarterback. Kevin Sherrer was doing a drill focused on punching out the football, while Derrick Ansley was leading a separate strip-and-scoop drill. Rocker was furious with Nigel Warrior after a poor rep but was complimentary of Alontae Taylor. Daniel Bituli and Warren Burrell had nice reps, too. Meanwhile, Sherrer got mad at Kivon Bennett for being too lax during the strip-sack drill.

It’s clear to see why Rocker likes Matthew Butler. Whether it was during the strip-sack drill or individual, the junior gives full effort on every rep. Butler doesn’t look as stiff as last season. He’s seeing work all across the line, too, lining up some with the 1s at nose today. Greg Emerson worked at both DT and SDE today.

The offensive line worked through various combo-block drills with the chute. Wanya Morris was back at left tackle with Jahmir Johnson at left guard. Riley Locklear also saw work at left guard. Nathan Niehaus, normally at right tackle, was the No. 2 left tackle today. The redshirt junior is clearly battling some injuries but he fights for every rep.

Jeremy Pruitt spent much of the second period working with the tight ends. He literally took-over a footwork drill. He wasn’t exactly thrilled with the results on several reps. After one rep, he pointed exactly where he wanted the tight ends to step and when Andrew Craig went too wide, Pruitt tossed up his hands in disgust.

I didn’t see of ton of routes on air today, but the little action I saw was good. The QBs and WRs were working on red zone throws, mostly fades, back-shoulder throws and corners. CedricTillman had a really athletic grab on one high throw from JT Shrout, while Jordan Murphy snagged a touchdown one-handed. Jim Chaney spent much of the period talking to JarrettGuarantano about ball placement after each rep.

Finally, no sign of JJ Peterson again on Thursday. We haven’t had the chance to ask Pruitt about the redshirt freshman linebacker. Perhaps Sherrercan shed some light on the subject later tonight.

Linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr.'sTennessee football career might be finished.

Kirkland has not participated in spring practice because of lingering knee issues, and he's receiving treatment from Dr. James Andrews, a Florida orthopedic surgeon who is well known for performing elbow, shoulder and knee procedures on many high-profile athletes.

“He had a little bit of a chronic knee (issue)," Vols coach Jeremy Pruitt said during an interview with WNML on Wednesday. "He’s had a couple of surgeries on his knee. He is undergoing some treatment in Pensacola with James Andrews. It’s something that’s been done on several guys that play in the NFL, that’s really extended their careers.

"Right now, he’s doing that. We’ve talked about the rehab part of it this summer and even the possibility of him not playing next fall and just getting ready for the (2020 NFL) draft."

Kirkland, a senior, appeared in every game last season and made 11 starts. His 51 tackles tied for fourth on the team.

Without Kirkland available, Will Ignont is the top candidate to start alongside Daniel Bituli.

Kirkland missed all of the 2017 season after suffering a preseason non-contact injury that resulted in a meniscus tear. In 2016, he missed five games with a high ankle sprain.

Kirkland's Tennessee career started with promise. He was an All-SEC freshman team selection in 2015, when he played in every game and had 66 tackles and three sacks.

"Once you’ve had multiple knee surgeries, where you start talking about quad strength and hamstring strength, if it’s not the same as it is on the other leg, you tend to have nagging injuries," Pruitt told WNML. "And that’s something that happened to him this past year.

"I think Darrin is a really, really good football player, has a bright future. But he does have to get his leg well, and I’m not so sure that seven or eight months of rehab would not do him best.”

For anyone else who doesn't want to wait 20 years for stupid USAT's platform to load.

Extend to big money? He’s locked up through his age 30 season. Most of his future value would be gone.

He was a 4 war player as a 21 year old. He probably would have gotten this salary in his first year of arbitration. It’s an unbelievably dumb deal for him.
He produces and they tear it up to extend him...it’s how it’s done. And 30 is your prime if you’re a star.
