On the subject of excuses and blame, I remembered this moment:
Back in 2002/2003 I have the privileged of meeting Coach Fulmer at a speaking engagement. I was super excited and nervous like you couldn't imagine when I got the chance to meet him, shake his hand, talk to him for a couple minutes. He was a very gracious person and so down to earth. He really gave you the impression that he truly felt he was no better than anyone else there, and that was something I found very impressive.
That said, he told a great story, I thought you guys would enjoy (and I'm sure many have heard it before):
He said after a Florida loss in 90s (can't remember specifically which) he was going to the Athletic Center the next morning to watch film, break it down with the coaches, and then meet with the team to discuss the game. Coach said he stopped at the same gas station he'd stop at every morning, get him a coffee, and was gassing up before he left. He said there was an old man getting gas next to him, and the old man started up a conversation.
"How you doing today?"
Coach replied, "Doing ok, you?"
"Aight I guess, not feeling good after that loss yesterday."
Coach says, "yeah, that wasn't a good game."
Old man fires back, "you know who's fault it is? It's that Fulmer's fault"
Coach replies back to the old man, "you know what, you're right. It was."
I'm so glad we have Phil back with us. Love him or hate him during his time as OUR coach, I hope we can agree know, he's a treasure and a blessing to us as Vols.
