I don't know why Kingston phrased it that way. Here's the part of the blog where it talks about it:

The UCLA deal hit a snag when UCLA wanted to give Barnes a $4 million signing bonus, then have him pay Tennessee the buyout. That would mean Barnes would be taxed about $1.6 million: 40 percent of $4 million.

Despite Barnes calling UCLA “one of the five best jobs in the country,’’ he wasn’t on board with UCLA’s buyout strategy and opted to stay at UT.

“This is a special place,’’ Barnes said of Knoxville.
Because it's Kingston?

The Athletic's mock has him in the middle/late first round (around 18-24 pick). nbadraft.net also has a consensus mock that aggregates a lot of popular mocks, and he's 40 in that mock.

Thanks for posting about the Athletic. Was curious what their mock said.
If he could get on the upper end of that, he should go.
#18 pick to the Spurs?

If he's anything from 25ish down, he should come back.

Develop one more year with perimeter D, shot from 3, willingness to take the mid-range jumper, and ability to create his own shot.

no, not the only reason. a reason.
Nope.

It’s exactly what it says. He likes Tennessee. Says it’s a special place - but says the only thing that prevented him from getting the deal done with UCLA was the signing bonus they agreed to give him would not pay a high enough portion of his buyout.

eh, Hyams was relaying what he was told, it wasn't a quote.

the buyout issue was a reason.

it was not THE ONLY reason.

From one of those fantastic "sources" Jimmy has? I'm sorry I don't dislike Hyams, but I take his comments with a grain of salt after our last coaching search. Dude also straight up told me in a phone conversation on air that Shane Battier wasn't a "good 3 pt shooter, until he got into the NBA and worked on his shot"

Shane Battier who had a better 3 pt % than J.J. Redick for his career at Duke wasn't a good 3 pt shooter. I don't know I fact check everything Hyams says 3 times these days after that lol

We can all speak honestly and objectively here, right?

As it relates to NBA potential, I don't think Grant leaving now vs. coming back for another year makes a bit of difference. I think he's limited from an athleticism point of you (my first time using it, @InVOLuntary !), and he's not going to get taller. I think he can improve his long-range shot (which he'll need since he won't be able to dominate down low...he doesn't even do that in college). And it's within the realm of possibility he could improve his perimeter defense (although athleticism will limit him there).

What I'm trying to say is that I think Grant is a hell of a college player, and I don't think he'll ever be a lottery pick in the NBA. I hope he proves me wrong. But I simply see him as Tyler Hansbrough-esque.

Admiral to Atlanta. That would be awesome.
NBADraft.net is garbage. The best website was DraftExpress that got shutdown after ESPN hired the guy who ran it, Jonathan G. Dude started as a poster on message board, Miami Heat fan and started the site for fun, got really good at it. I still remember him at RealGM.com

Glad we kept him, but the achievements to this point don’t justify that kind of money. JMO.
I can see fans wanting banners hanging to show accomplishments, but the last two year have been electric for the fan base. I have not researched the numbers, but it looked like the house was packed every night. To me that is what basketball is all about even with the disappointment of no banners, it was exciting to watch and it gave us something to be proud of. On another note I think CRB has class, he respects others and he doesn't make a butt out of himself. I think he is a great leader and coach. I am glad he stayed at UT.

that's why hyams said. it wasn't a direct ask/answer question.

and there's nothing in that blog by hyams about the counter TN offered and what affect that had on anything....i mean, it's not like he just turned it down w/out having a clue about what TN was going to come to the table with...as if the buy out issue was the absolute deal breaker.......c'mon.

was it part of the reason? sure. was it the SOLE, ONLY, ABSOLUTE reason he's still our coach today?

NOPE.

people see/read/hear what they want to. and hyams shaped that in his own special way, probably just to generate conversations like this........

that's the way I feel-- and no worry about him bringing the NCAA on our backs.

Let's go back and remember that AV said this weekend will lay the foundation for the 2020 class.
Foundation, to me, says Cooper, Baron, and maybe Tate Ratledge. Random commits aren’t the foundation, at least as I see it. Those two in state guys tho would be. Ratledge too since he’s a big time piece to this class

Hansbrough went 13th overall though...(but I see your point) still a 6-8 year NBA career wouldn't exactly be bad for him.

My thing with Grant (and Bone), you get one chance to be a senior in college basketball and create that legacy. College heroes are legends for life, the NBA and pro basketball fan is far less loyal to players. You manage to win the first SEC tournament in 40 years, or the first EVER Final Four appearance at Tennessee and you'll seriously have cemented yourself in the state as well as college basketball.

the NBA will be there next season, and I don't think their stocks are going to drop much (if at all) returning for another year. If anything both of them coming back could help Admiral's stock two less players to potentially draft in stead of him.

I don’t think I’m spinning it in any way.

Both things can be true. He really likes it here, appreciated the offer we gave him, etc. but at the end of the day that reads to me like the only true reason he didn’t leave was because the snag on the buyout - which plenty of people were reporting in real time yesterday.

You stated Barnes said something that was never said in the article. Why would you do that?

This is kind of the point @jakez4ut is making.

I think Barnes returned mostly because UT was willing to bring more to the table and he loves it here.

oh, i think it's clear we disagree.

and i'm not saying people wont' say that in recruiting.

i'm saying it won't matter cause every counter to that argument is a lot stronger......it's a weak argument.
From your perspective it may be. From others maybe not so much.
