$4.7M for one S16 this decade man.

I mean I’d rather he stay but expectations should be and will be raised. Hope he’s got it in him.

Guarantee it's a money making move - in the end that's what matters. The cost of the BBall program is tiny compared to FBall and a little success goes a long way in the revenue dept.

That is much more than what Beilein, Marshall, Bennett, and Drew make. All are better coaches. That figure gets attention in that sort of pool.

Which is leaving a more storied program to come to a football school? Consider why UCLA wasn't drawing them with an offer of more than they were making.

which would come and would you lose Barnes to bring back Pearl?

UCLA offered Calipari and he said no. Why on earth would Izzo, Bennett, or Beard say "yeah, Tennessee is the opportunity I've been waiting on"?

Well, the SEC isn’t nearly as competitive as the ACC. So Bennett potentially could have said yes, especially with a fat pay increase.

Given Bruce whips Barnes every time they see each other, I’d have to go with Bruce.

Izzo? Who knows, maybe he’s tired of the cold weather.

And Beard? Well, we like people from Texas, don’t we?

Are we forgetting that Texas fired him? Yea, he’s been a good coach for us to get things back on track but damn...we’re paying him like he’s Tom Izzo (who, btw, only makes 4.1 mil a year and has a .723 win percentage).

Very true but Izzo was not coming........Self and Williams wasn’t coming either.

Heck I’m very proud Tennessee finally stepped up and paid. The football program would prob be a lot different had they done that a long time ago.

why didn't UCLA go after these guys (exception being Pearl though I wouldn't be surprised if he's next on the list)?

UCLA appears unwilling to put out significant cash upfront for a buyout. That was the bluff. Should have called him on it or compromised, not handed away the keys to the farm. It's an overpayment plain and simple without dispute.

Those are all pipe dreams. Beard is divorced, and his kids live in Texas. He is about to get a raise.

If we had to hire a new coach, Pearl was about the only coach at a similar school that we may have had a chance at hiring. Maybe someone like Andy Kennedy. Otherwise, it was someone like Steve Forbes.

If true, Fulmer is the Man. We’ve seen in football that offering money doesn’t always get your guy. I’m not sure Barnes is worth that much but It seems likely that had He left Tennessee would have ended up with a lesser coach.

I think it's pure economics. Top 25 program, NCAA and Sweet 16 easily pays the bills for a small coaching staff and 12 scholarship players.

All of this before or after we threw out 4.7mil ? That kind of figure attracts big names.

This likely creates a salary increase for Pruitt prematurely. Football coach in Knoxville is not going to like playing second fiddle to basketball.

Football coach better win if he wants more money period. End of story. Shut up with the football talk. Pruit has done jack **** so far. He'll get his when UT sees results. Losing to Vandy gets you nada....

We aren’t just paying for Barnes here. This shows we expect to be in the National conversation for the foreseeable future . We aren’t settling anymore by some Mid Major coach that might have success for at P5 program, but are willing to pay to consistently be a player in the SEC and Nationally. It makes us more attractive to other big names to want to be here in the future.

Spend money to make money.

Yes. And it appears possible that was part of the deal falling apart. Just as likely the renegotiation with UT meeting could easily also have been an attempt to negotiate a reduced Barnes buyout to leave. Sans buyout reduction, Barnes likely held less advantage in negotiation to stay.

I guarantee they ran the numbers and Barnes being here another year or so = profit; replacing him (paying some buyout and unknown) = loss or uncertain profit
