Yeah, Fulmer needs to keep that buyout. If they really want Rick and Rick really wants to leave, then pay up. We can pay Butch off and get his stink off the TN books. I’m just meh about what happens...if he leaves, thanks for what you did for our program. If he stays, then great.

I dont understand buyout negotiation whatsoever. What exactly is ucla negotiating with?!? What do we get for a lessened buyout?

Hard to see a 64 year old, southern, god-fearing man like Rick Barnes enjoying life out amongst the godless, pot-smoking liberals in LA. If he takes the job, he must have been pretty unhappy in Knoxville for a while.

Aint so bad out there. Sunny with 11s all day to look at. Even the female janitors at the mall are 11s. Its insane. Oh and the good stuff legal out there too :p

So this is what a crack head must feel like when he is about out of rock and no money to get anymore ? I really thought the one good thing we had going was basketball. I kinda felt like it was stable for the next hand full of years anyway.

In other news Ill have some more intel on the Barnes situation later today and relay what I can.
This would be interesting in the fact the door could now be open for you know who to come back. And make no mistake about it....he would love to come back.

In other news...this weekend is going to be a BIG one for football recruiting. There will be many on radar and a few off radar folks coming in for the Spring game. The foundation of the class will be laid this weekend.

Bruce Pearl returns to Knoxville 9200AE28-AB6D-42FD-92F0-B5BF40E93A92.jpeg

104.5 said Tennessee would have to pay Barnes 5 mill +

Pruitt makes 4 so that’s a no.
This sucks. Maybe I'm not understanding all this, but we aren't going to pay Deacon Rick Barnes but then turn around and Pay Pearl more, especially with possible NCAA hanging over his head?

I think TB is FOS, but... If Fulmer didn't attend the Naismith awards as some have said, plus didn't offer big money for Lanier (when they give the sun and moon to football) then Barnes may have felt unloved.
Yeah, I've kind of cringed when Fulmer has said so repeatedly that fixing football was his priority and would Barnes feel like 2nd fiddle?

Outside of fans wanting that, what are the odds he would, or we would?
Atlanta said Pearl would return in a heartbeat.

I believe Bruce would come back, and I think UT is a better basketball town than Auburn too.

I kinda wonder now if we lost Lanier because he couldn’t get a raise and that’s what this is all stemming from.

There aren’t many basketball coaches making 5+ last data I recall. Barnes was already in the top 30 highest paid I believe.

Coach Barnes: "Phillip, I hate it here and want out. I can't win here consistently with the resources you have provided me."

Phillip: "Coach! Why would you think that? I know I've had my hands full with the Lady Vols coaching search and with trying to get football back on track."

Coach Barnes: "I've only got a few years left and I don't see myself winning anything of consequence here. I 've got an opportunity to go to UCLA at a lot more money and a loaded roster. I really want to leave but I need you to negotiate on the buyout".

Fulmer: "I really am not prepared to budge on that buyout. It's expensive to hire coaches and pay another coaches buyout."

Coach Barnes: "I see your point but I should add that if I'm forced to stay, I'm putting it on cruise control until I retire. Not sure if the Vols will make the tournament while I'm here. I mean I'll do my best given the time I'll allocate toward it."

I know everyone wants an update this morning of the very latest. At this point (9am), there doesn't appear to be any new information.

What we know is that the courtship with UCLA and Barnes is real and has some legs to it. We know that Barnes and Fulmer met on campus last night for a period of time.

Both Fulmer and Barnes' camps have had nothing to say since the meeting took place some 12 hours ago.

We wait and see what happens next.

We don't know for sure what UCLA is offering. We don't know what Barnes wants from Tennessee for sure. Multi-year deals for is assistants has been a big deal for Barnes in terms of something he wants.

In terms of anything else? I am not sure right now. Obviously, it's the story of the day that we are following as closely as we can.

That's not enough to make me want to live in CA.

Why not? Have a bad experience there?

Its a huge state and there are bad (Fresno, Oakland) places like anywhere, but some really great places too like san diego and santa barbara. Depends where you go, but ive generally found the people very nice and scenery is beautiful all over. Lots of culture and diversity too, so great food...because thats what really matters.

Well that would be a big ole lie considering we are throwing brink after brink at the football program. 1.2m for helton, 1.5m for retread chaney, 1m for ansley. I could see why Barnes may not like he, national Coty and 3 decade veteran, is basically making same or less than a 2nd year football HC. But youd think hed be use to playing 2nd fiddle at texas. idk

I don't know all the details but in football, attendance is really down. On average last year there were 25,000 empty seats for each of our home games. That is even after dishing out around 5,000 complimentary tickets for each of the last two games. The number of tickets "distributed" is what is reported as "announced attendance" but a lot of people just aren't showing up. Only 5% of our fans on any given Saturday hail from Knox County. 70% come from outside the county and another 25% come from outside the state. This according to a survey the university commissioned in 2015. The average fan from Knox County spends about $55 on game day, not including tickets, while out of staters spend $308. Not only are our revenues under a bit of stress but declining attendance also has an adverse economic impact on the community. Clearly the cash cow for the university sports programs is football. It's hard to argue with the notion that the situation with the football program should be Fulmer's absolute number one priority, even if necessary, at the expense of other programs. The train ain't going anywhere unless the locomotive is working. jmo.
