Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

I can’t say I am surprised. Barnes wins the SEC last season and then has an even better season to follow it up. ADs took notice and now a big boy program is bringing the Brinks truck to get arguably the 2nd best coach in the SEC.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Pearl has also been interviewed at UCLA.

Really would gut me to lose Barnes, Lanier, Bone, and other juniors (Grant & Turner probably leave if Barnes is out) damn...can’t we have nice things and one off season without a coaching search?

There are not pot smokers in Knoxville?
Ones in Knoxville have to keep it somewhat hidden. Go to a legal state and take a walk on a Saturday afternoon and you can smell it all over.

It doesn't bother me. I partook plenty in college and am pro-legalization. But it's harder to get away from in legal states and old religious types usually don't care for having to be around pot smoke the way young liberal types don't care for being around cigarette smoke.

Hey @Atlanta VOL, maybe you could help Dennis out, and top off his go fund me to get him to the amount he needs to cover his wife’s burial? Volnation has rose up again and got him very close in a short time.
Sorry have not been on here much for a variety of reasons...so trying to get caught up.
I just saw I am late to the game with this as he did raise what was needed. However If anyone knows Dennis and there is something he needs please post it. I am happy to help.

The housing cost index in Westwood is 76.1% higher than in Knoxville but aside from that if we offered him $5 million, UCLA would have to offer $6.4 million to match. I sort of gather though that he doesn't care about the money for himself. I remember when Pruitt was hired there was talk that he took less money for himself in order to have more money for his staff. Now I hear RB has been paying coaches out of his own pocket. Clearly the implication is that the success of the guy at the top is very much dependent on their ability to recruit and retain quality staff. They may be in it for themselves but I think it's perhaps more of a selfish pursuit of success for their programs than it is to pad their personal bank accounts. jmo.

His current $3.25 million salary will be worth
about 1/2 that in tax crazy California. While in Tennessee it’s still worth over 2 million or more. Not sure that factors for Barnes, but you would need a lot of money for assistants to make up that difference even at $200k plus.

His Cali state tax at current salary would be 380k. His total hurdle rate to have the same take home pay would be about $4m. I'd say $4.1-$4.2 total hurdle with cost of housing and other. From the sound of it he'd be offered 5+. At $5.1m he'd take home roughly $500k extra, 25% more than currently.

In other news Ill have some more intel on the Barnes situation later today and relay what I can.
This would be interesting in the fact the door could now be open for you know who to come back. And make no mistake about it....he would love to come back.

In other news...this weekend is going to be a BIG one for football recruiting. There will be many on radar and a few off radar folks coming in for the Spring game. The foundation of the class will be laid this weekend.

So I’m guessing your hearing that it’s trending towards Barnes leaving

I can read you like a book!!!

Tbh I would for sure take back BP, in a heartbeat. And he’s a great candidate to be HC with current AD, cause Phil will leave him be as long as he stays outta trouble and wins.

That's not enough to make me want to live in CA.

I did in the basketball forum and was told I was a sorry excuse for a Tennessee fan and to go F myself ect. It’s how I felt IF he did leave. Pretty much that he’s a mercenary like most coaches and a POS.

I like you Jacket. But your strong words were a little premature.

If Barnes was paying his assistants out of his own pocket, he may have legitimate concerns about Fulmer’s commitment to MBB. Lanier leaving may have been about money and may well have been the last straw. Barnes may be using the only tool he has to force the issue. This may not be about him and his pay, but about his budget for assistants. And coming off of this season, obviously Barnes is negotiating from a position of strength. Now we get to see if Phil is the AD we hope he is.

I believe this to be the case. Any move Barnes makes is not about money for himself. He has money. He just wants to be loyal to those who help him and want the resources to succeed.

I just find it hard to believe Fulmer would alienate Barnes over a few $100k for his assistants. Doesn't make sense.

If Barnes is feeling unappreciated at Tennessee after getting 20k attendance at every home game, wait until he sees the apathy of the LA Sports scene for anything but Laker playoff basketball.

I think TB is FOS, but... If Fulmer didn't attend the Naismith awards as some have said, plus didn't offer big money for Lanier (when they give the sun and moon to football) then Barnes may have felt unloved.

sounds like he tried to get a raise. but tn said 'yyeeaah, we dont have the cash'.
Well that would be a big ole lie considering we are throwing brink after brink at the football program. 1.2m for helton, 1.5m for retread chaney, 1m for ansley. I could see why Barnes may not like he, national Coty and 3 decade veteran, is basically making same or less than a 2nd year football HC. But youd think hed be use to playing 2nd fiddle at texas. idk

Can't blame him if those things are true

Hope this means we’re getting some commitments.
