The Atlanta Braves - Hello darkness my old friend

Which seems to go against the pace of play issue. More offense = longer games.

538 did a pretty good write up that foul balls, not pitchers, are to blame for a lot of the issue. I can’t imagine a 3 batter minimum fixes that.
So maybe the fix is to allow more pitchers on the staff, but only allow x of those to be eligible in a given game.

Because I don’t think we’re ever going back to a world where these guys pitch past their comfort zone.

They’re effing with rules to try to appeal to more people and all they’re going to do is alienate people they already have
Yeah, I generally feel this way.

Baseball is almost designed to be leisurely. I don’t mind spending half the day passively watching baseball. But I understand that hurts attendance/TV ratings for a customer base moving towards faster information/faster everything.

It’s shorter than everything but basketball games

Right - but it’s built in that the game can go on forever. I think the reason it *feels* longer is that exactly.

If you’re in the middle of the 3rd quarter of a terrible football game, you know when it’s going to end. Not so much for a bad baseball game in the 4th inning.

Again, I’m a baseball fan so you’re preaching to the choir a bit - but I’m just trying to understand it from an outsiders perspective.

I’d rather watch a 2-1 pitchers duel than a 6-6 AFC South game on Sundays, no doubt about it.

Two unintended consequences of 26 man/13 pitchers.

1. Assuming the universal DH, basically we are going to create platoon baseball.

2. How do you designate two way players?

100% on platoon baseball and limiting number of relievers and putting in an out minimum will make it even more egregious

You’re also going to reduce the average salary for each player if roster sizes go up. Gonna be even more $500K guys that the veterans wanna B and M about

I wonder if that is the owners plan because that will limit salaries for hitters. “Yeah sure you rake against righties but you only get 125 starts a year because you don’t play against lefties. I’m not giving you $15M a year to start just 125 games.”

It’s crazy how people say it’s boring or too long or whatever. It’s the perfect sport to watch while doing other stuff in our multi tasking/electronic world. In high school I’d wait to do homework at 7:00 and have the Braves on in the background. I do a lot of my writing during baseball. With hockey and basketball, you have to put your focus on that or if you try and do anything else, you miss big parts of the game.

I agree, but I also do this with NBA. NBA games are the perfect background noise for me. Nothing matters until the last 4 minutes. Down 25? Up 25? Just wait.

That’s true.

I think baseball can make some tweaks, but man it feels like Manfred and company overreact. Baseball still kills in local ratings. Still makes $3B more than the NBA. Still averages more per game than NBA/NHL. Still has the highest salaries. Playoff rating right in line with the NBA. I get it, the National ratings on regular season games are not great, but you know what hurts them? They’re still terrible at marketing players.

Trout doesn’t care to be marketed and Harper is a heel without a face

Yeah that’s the biggest thing. The game is built to be anti-individual. They need to get rid of that thinking and build up these guys.

Ronald Acuna should be the biggest star in Atlanta but somehow it’s Josef Martinez.

Let’s not get carried away

I’d make these changes

1. I like the 26 man/13 pitcher rule, but no DH. I’d do 30 man/15 pitcher rule in September.

2. With a pitching change during an inning, new pitcher gets 3 warmup pitchers on the mound.

3. 20 second pitch clock with no one on base.

4. Five mound visits
