I don't know that I'd agree with that. IMO the Braves are run in a pretty rational manner. Huge free agent contracts ARE a pretty poor risk, and you can't just say "okay, we're going to sign a bunch of top free agents and now we'll probably win a championship." Adding Harper to this team would increase their chances of winning the title next year from what, 2 percent to 4 percent? Obviously I am making these numbers up, but whatever the numbers are, they're tiny. And in return for that incremental increase you're getting married to a giant sunk chunk of risk. So yeah, rationally I get why from a business standpoint it's not worth it.

But from a fan's standpoint, going from 2 percent to 4 percent isn't incremental at all. It means you're twice as likely to win a championship! Which is a massive difference! Which is why the ideal ownership is rational enough to understand that you can't just throw money around, you've got to build a winning team methodically....but also enough of an irrational fan to throw caution out the window and say "screw it, I'm a billionaire!" when an opportunity arises. I guarantee that if Arthur Blank owned the Braves they'd be talking to Harper.

Listen to Effectively Wild’s Podcast episode 1327 with Neil deMause about this. You never make the money back from spending big on players. So it doesn’t incentivize owners to do that
